Other Risks For Dogs Riding In Vehicles
The best way to keep your dog safe in a moving vehicle is to use a harness, carrier, or crate. Look for equipment that has been crash-tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety. Without proper restraint, dogs can climb into your lap and restrict your view of traffic, move near and block the brake or accelerator pedal, and be seriously injured by an airbag or thrown into the windshield in the event of an accident or sudden stop.
Dogs who hang their heads out the open window are also at risk. Eye, ear, face, and mouth injuries from airborne objects or shrubs and branches can occur. Unrestrained dogs at open windows are in danger of falling out if theres a collision or abrupt turn, and they may even decide to jump out if they see something they want to chase. A dog riding in the bed of a pickup truck is also at risk of being hit by airborne objects, falling from the truck, or jumping out.
So if youre headed out to run errands that really dont involve any fun activities for your dog, you might want to consider leaving him safely at home.
Thermal Camera Shows How Hot Brake Rotors Get During Use
Its common knowledge brakes heat up during use, but how hot can they get? Simply put, pretty darn hot. Jason Fenske from Engineering Explained is back with another intriguing video made with help from a $55,000 FLIR thermal camera. This time, he points the camera at the brakes and takes some measurements.
The camera shows us five specific points where heat is registered: the leading edge of the brake pad, the rotor before the brake pad, the rotor after passing through the caliper, the wheel hub, and the back of the brake pad itself.

Its interesting to see that the outer edge of the brake rotor registers as the hottest portion. This is due to slight rust that has formed on this rotor, which means the rotor isnt as reflective, allowing the camera to read the highest temperatures. Jason says a warped rotor would produce similar results.
Another takeaway is the fact that the wheels seem to scrub some heat for the brakes. Heat from the brakes passes through the wheels and then to the outside air as the wheels spin. Potentially, different kinds of wheel material may offer better braking performance through their ability to cool the rotors.

How Hot Can A Car Get Parked In The Phoenix Sun What About The Shade
PHOENIX Parked in the sun for an hour, car seats reach an average of 123 degrees in the summer, according to a study by ASU and UC San Diego.
The steering wheel averaged 127 degrees.
In one of the cars studied, the dashboard reached 192 degrees, according to state climatologist Nancy Selover.
The average dashboard reached 157 degrees.
These temperatures inside cars parked in the heat can burn tender skin.
On a childs tender skin, if their child seat was exposed to the sun, that would be extremely hot, Selover said.
The study went a step further, examining different types of cars in the shade, as well.
Though the inside of the car was significantly cooler, the dashboard averaged 118 degrees, seats averaged 105 degrees, and the temperature of a hypothetical two-year-old child in the backseat would break 100 degrees within 60 minutes.
Most studies dont look at that, Selover said. Theres sort of an assumption that, well, if the cars parked in the shade, its not going to be a problem. we found that it certainly can be.
Children can catch life-threatening hyperthermia when they reach a temperature of 104 degrees.
The study found that it would take a little more than an hour before a child catches hyperthermia while the car is parked in the sun. In the shade, it would take a little more than two hours.

Yes, the same greenhouse effect that traps heat in the atmosphere and keeps our planet at a comfy temperature for us to live is also responsible for baking your car on warm days. Your car’s windshield not only allows you an unobstructed wide view while on the road, it also allows the sunlight an unobstructed pathway inside your car’s interior. Just like , the sun’s shortwave radiation passes through a car’s windows. These windows are only warmed a little, but the darker colored objects that the sunrays strike are heated immensely due to their lower albedo. These heated objects, in turn, heat the surrounding air by convection and conduction.
According to a 2002 San Jose University study, temperatures in enclosed cars with a basic gray interior rise approximately 19 degrees F in 10 minutes’ time 29 degrees in 20 minutes’ time 34 degrees in half an hour 43 degrees in 1 hour and 50-55 degrees over a period of 2-4 hours.

How Hot Does A Car Get In The Sun
On a hot day, the temperature inside a car can rise to dangerous levels in less than an hour. This chart can help you understand just how hot a car gets in the sun, depending on the outside air temperature:
For example, a 2018 study published in the journal Temperature took three vehicles of identical models and placed them in either direct sun or under shade in Tempe, AZ. When parked in the sun, a car’s internal temperature increased from 85°F to 116°F in just an hour, while it reached 101°F in the shade.
“Light comes into the car through the windows, but heat can’t get out, and so the car gets much hotter than outside,” says Jaiva Larsen, MD, a physician in the Emergency Medicine Department of the University of Arizona Health Sciences. “In a parked car, the temperature can go up 20 degrees Fahrenheit in just 10 minutes.”
A 2005 study published in Pediatrics found that even rolling down the windows might not make a difference. When the car windows were closed, the temperature rose 3.4°F per minute, and when the windows were rolled down about 8 inches, the temperature still rose 3.1°F per minute.
“Many parents are surprised to learn that cracking the window open does little to keep the car cool,” says Skyler Kalady, MD, a pediatrician at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital.

How The Fan Helps
The radiator needs a constant flow of air through its core to cool it adequately. When the car is moving, this happens anyway but when it is stationary a fan is used to help the airflow.
The fan may be driven by the engine, but unless the engine is working hard, it is not always needed while the car is moving, so the energy used in driving it wastes fuel.
To overcome this, some cars have a viscous coupling a fluid clutch worked by a temperature sensitive valve that uncouples the fan until the coolant temperature reaches a set point.
Other cars have an electric fan, also switched on and off by a temperature sensor.
To let the engine warm up quickly, the radiator is closed off by a thermostat, usually sited above the pump. The thermostat has a valve worked by a chamber filled with wax.
When the engine warms up, the wax melts, expands and pushes the valve open, allowing coolant to flow through the radiator.
When the engine stops and cools, the valve closes again.
Water expands when it freezes, and if the water in an engine freezes it can burst the block or radiator. So antifreeze usually ethylene glycol is added to the water to lower its freezing point to a safe level.
Antifreeze should not be drained each summer it can normally be left in for two or three years.

- Look for a shady spot.
- Block the sun streaming in through the windshield with a reflective sun shade.
- Trap the edge of a towel or sheet in the side windows to block the sun.
