Geico Sends Pip Check To Us After Pedestrians Personal Injury Case Settles With Driver
Liberty Mutual paid about $2,000 of the pedestrians medical bills, and lost wages.
We negotiated with Liberty Mutual, and they accepted $553 to pay off their workers comp lien of about $2,000. I paid Liberty Mutual from the personal injury settlement.
The next step was to get my client reimbursed for the $553. GEICO insured a car that the pedestrian owned. GEICOs PIP adjuster was Maegan Thompson.
I asked GEICO to use the pedestrians PIP to pay us back for the $553 that we paid to Liberty Mutual.
GEICO refused. They argued that since the pedestrians PIP deductible was $1,000, GEICO didnt owe any PIP benefits for the first $1,000.
I told GEICO that GEICOs deductible argument was wrong since the original workers comp lien was $2,000.
GEICO denied my request. I then sent GEICO a copy of a Florida case that says that GEICOs argument was wrong.
GEICO then sent us a check for the $1,068.55. This amount covered the workers comp lien that I paid.
It also covered the pedestrians first 7 days of lost wages that workers comp didnt pay.
Geico Vs Allstate Farmers Progressive And State Farm
Geico began as an auto insurance company for U.S. government employees and military personnel. In fact, the name Geico comes from the words Government Employees Insurance Co. Today, Geico has a wide range of customers beyond the government sector, making Geico the second-largest private passenger auto insurance company in the country.

Geico is the cheapest car insurance company for good drivers based on nationwide averages. It comes in with rates below State Farm, Progressive, Farmers and Allstate.
Geicos rates go up about $160 a year if youve gotten a speeding ticket, based on the national average. Still, Geico comes out on top as the cheapest insurance choice if you have a ticket.
Causing a car accident that injures someone else is a serious issue, with insurance rates that reflect that. In our analysis State Farm has cheapest rates, on average, in this situation, but Geico is second-best among the top insurers.
Geicos average insurance rates go up about $1,900 a year if you get a DUI conviction. Youll see an increase at renewal time. In this case State Farm, Progressive and Farmers may offer more competitive rates.
If you were caught driving uninsured, expect to pay a higher rate when you buy a policy compared to what youd pay without a lapse in auto insurance. Geico had the best rates in our analysis of the top insurers.
Rise In Car Accidents
Even though theres been improvements to cars, such as safety features, car crashes are still on the rise.
According to the Institute for Highway Safety, 36,750 people died in crashes in 2018 in the U.S. This is due to a number of reasons, including distracted driving and drug and alcohol impaired driving.
The more accidents, the more potential claims that are filed for all insurance companies to pay out. This increase in costs then pushes premiums up.

Recommended Bodily Injury And Property Damage Liability Coverage
Because claims made to property damage and bodily liability coverage can vary dramatically depending on the drivers and vehicles involved in the accident, we typically recommend carrying an amount equal to your net worth. To determine your net worth, add your assets and subtract this number by your total debt. If your net worth is less than the minimum requirements of your state, you may consider getting the minimum standard liability coverage.
What Auto Insurance Coverages Does Geico Offer
GEICO’s insurance coverages are similar to those of other major insurers, and they include:
- Bodily injury and property liability coverage
- Gap Insurance for leased vehicles
- Medical payment and personal injury protection coverage
- Mechanical breakdown insurance, otherwise called car repair insurance, which you can only add to cars less than 15 months old that have fewer than 15,000 miles on the odometer
- Ride-share insurance, which covers you while driving for work or pleasure
- Emergency road service, which covers the cost of jump-starts, towing, locksmith services, and flat-tire changes, among others
- Accident forgiveness, which means the insurer will not hike your premiums after one at-fault accident
- Glass coverage, which allows you to file comprehensive claims for glass repairs for a cheap price
- Rental reimbursement, which covers the cost of a rental car if your vehicle is out of service for over 24 hours
Car insurance prices vary depending on where you live, what car you drive, your driving habits, and other factors, so contact a GEICO provider to get an accurate quote.

Why Your Geico Insurance Might Not Go Down At 25
If you turn 25 years old and buy a fast, new sports car, your premiums will likely increase despite your age. Similarly, new drivers are expensive to insure at any age. Getting insurance with a brand-new license will be less expensive at 25 years old than at 16, but your policy will still cost more than it would for someone with driving experience.
Finally, drivers with a history of tickets, claims, and at-fault accidents might not see a decrease at all when they turn 25. In fact, high risk drivers could pay more for insurance, even after turning 25, if they add more violations to their record.
Geico checks your driving record twice a year, since it sells six-month policies. Insurance companies like Geico check driving records when customers renew their policies, to determine how risky they are to continue insuring. Given that driving-related offenses suggest you are more likely to get into an accident and file a claim, Geico raises premiums for drivers who don’t have a clean driving record.
One speeding ticket will raise insurance rates by an average of 25% across insurance companies, for example. Similarly, an at-fault accident increases premiums by 20% to 40%, on average, and 45% at Geico.
In the meantime, though, policy renewal is a great time to compare quotes from multiple insurers to be sure you’re getting the best deal for the coverage levels you want.
How To Cancel Geico Car Insurance
Cancelling your GEICO car insurance policy is pretty simple. All you need to do is call them up and let them know that you’re interested in cancelling your policy. It’s important to notify them before your next payment otherwise, it will be automatically debited from your account. GEICO has a no-cancellation-fee policy, so you won’t have to pay anything extra should you decide to cancel your coverage!

What Car Insurance Coverages Should I Have
A standard full-coverage car insurance policy may include other common coverages, in addition to bodily injury and property damage liability coverage. These standard auto insurance coverages include comprehensive and collision coverage, personal injury protection , medical payments and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.
While liability car insurance coverage is required in every state, except for New Hampshire, these additional coverages are often recommended for many drivers. In fact, PIP and uninsured motorist coverage are commonly required in many states. Below, we briefly describe each of these types of car insurance coverage and when you should get them.
|Car insurance coverage|
|Protects you in accidents involving an at-fault, uninsured or underinsured driver||…it is mandated in your state or you don’t have PIP or collision insurance.|
We typically recommend that drivers have both collision and comprehensive coverage on their policy, especially if their car has a value greater than $2,000. Deductibles for collision and comprehensive coverage are usually no more than $2,000, so having this kind of car insurance coverage is worthwhile when your car has a value higher than this amount. Importantly, collision and comprehensive coverage differs from personal liability in that it protects physical damage to your car, whereas personal liability protects you from damages filed by a third party in an accident.

% Of The Total Verdict Was For Pain And Suffering
On April 11, 2013, at trial a jury awarded her $326,468. Candy was 51 at the time of trial.
They gave her $141,408 in past medical expenses. However, in Florida the injured person cannot recover the billed charges if insurance paid at a lower rate.
Candy received $10,000 in PIP and $10,000 in Medpay Benefits. Thus, GEICO was entitled to a $20,000 credit for PIP and Medpay.
Also, she had health insurance that paid a good amount of her medical bills. Since her health insurance company had a contract with some of her medical providers, GEICO was entitled to a credit for the discounts. Thus, GEICO got a credit of $55,299.81 for her health insurance discounts.
Basically, GEICO only owed Candy $66,108 for her past medical bills after GEICO got its credits for her PIP, Medpay and health insurance discounts.
Apparently, Candy also settled with Progressive for $7,000. I dont know who Progressive insured in this case.
After all of the credits , the $326,468 verdict was reduced to $244,108.19. Thus, the case value was 1.7 times the total medical billed charges.
Geico Offered The $75k Um Insurance Limits Once It Learned She Had Surgery
GEICO noted, when it became aware Cadle underwent a surgery, it tendered the $75,000 policy limits, which were rejected.
In her uninsured motorist insurance trial against GEICO, the jury found Cadle had sustained a permanent injury within a reasonable degree of medical probability as a result of the July 27, 2007, accident and awarded her a verdict of $900,000.
The judge reduced the judgment to $816,636.31, after applying set-offs for collateral sources and the prior bodily injury settlement.
Cadles attorney claimed that GEICO acted in bad faith by not tendering the $75,000 uninsured motorist insurance limits much sooner.

How Do Property Damage And Bodily Injury Liability Work What Is The Recommended Coverage
Property damage liability coverage will cover the repair and parts replacement costs of damage to homes, storefronts, vehicles and other stationary objects. The cost of repairing or getting original equipment manufacturer parts can be very different depending on whether its a $10,000 car or a $100,000 car.
Bodily injury liability coverage will pay out for medical care, emergency services, compensation of lost income and even funeral expenses. Claims made under bodily injury liability coverage are affected by a number of variable factors, which as Kirchen explained, can range widely:
The skill level of the injured third party
Is the other driver a minimum wage employee or a highly skilled neurosurgeon? Bodily injury liability compensates the other party for lost income.
The type of injury sustained by the other driver
Were there minor bruises and scratches, a debilitating head injury, a loss of limb or nerve damage? An accident can potentially impact someones livelihood and earning power. “There is a big difference between bumps and bruises and a head injury or loss of limb or nerve damage in a hand,” explained Kirchen, “all of which can severely hinder the aforementioned neurosurgeons practice.”
The age of the injured person
A young professional still has many years of significant earning power ahead that the accident could have impacted, while an older person may be getting ready to retire and therefore won’t experience much loss of income.
How To Find Cheap Car Insurance After An Accident
Car insurance rates vary among insurers. If you see an increase in your auto insurance rates after a car accident, there may be other companies that could offer lower rates for the same coverage. You can start looking for a new insurance company but make sure you compare quotes from at least 3 insurers to get the best deal.
$52k Settlement With Geico For Back Injury From Car Accident
Daniel was driving his car in Coral Gables . Marlene was driving another car. She crashed into the back of Daniels car.
Police came to the scene. Neither driver reported injuries. The police officer gave Marlene a ticket for careless driving. Here is the diagram from the crash report:
Daniel did not take an ambulance to the hospital. In fact, he didnt go to the hospital at all.
Within hours after the accident, Daniel was looking for a personal injury attorney with an office near him in Coral Gables, Miami-Dade County, Florida. He called my law firm and hired us.
We gave him the name of a doctor who treated people with back injuries.
Daniel was insured with GEICO. The PIP coverage on his car insurance policy paid 80% of his medical bills.
We also made a personal injury claim against GEICO . We settled with GEICO for $5,200.
Most of the settlement was for his pain and suffering. We were also able to get his out of pocket medical bills reduced.
Here is a photo of Daniel and myself when he came to my office to get his settlement check:
$125k Geico Car Accident Settlement
Earlier, I mentioned that I settled a car accident case with GEICO for $125,000.
The other driver failed to yield the right of way. Here is a diagram of the accident.
The airbag in my clients car cut his head.
He did not need stitches.
He also broke a bone in his hand.
You can see the bone that he broke:
In that case, GEICO began negotiating the settlement by making a $81,000 offer.
Here is a comparison between GEICOs first offer and the final settlement in that case:
Most of the settlement was for pain and suffering.
As with most GEICO settlements where you have surgery, and there is plenty of BIL insurance, most of the payout was for pain and suffering.
Take a look:
After my lawyer fees, costs, and paying my clients medical bills and workers compensation lien, he got most of the settlement in his pocket.
Take a look:
The final settlement was about 44 times my clients final out of pocket medical bills and workers comp lien.
I was able to use my clients PIP insurance to pay off most of the workers compensation lien.
In other words, the pain and suffering multiplier was 44.

Choose A Higher Deductible
Opting for a higher deductible on any of your insurance policies from Geico can lower your premium. But if you decide to go this route, its important to set aside enough money to pay your deductible in case you need to file a claim. Otherwise, you might not be able to use the coverage that you have.
