Electronic issues are not limited to your power windows or instrument panel – they can also present themselves in the components of your door. For example, a short-circuit could prevent your locks from disengaging when the door is open, causing the locks to remain engaged. The locks will then act as physical blocks for the door.

If you suspect that this may be the issue, you can check your cars fuses and see if there is a short-circuit in play. If so, you can replace the wiring or fuses and try to use the electronic locking control again to see if the problem has been resolved.

A Nuts And Bolts Approach To Door Alignment

“They just don’t make ’em like they used to.” That much is true, but it ain’t necessarily a bad thingespecially when we’re talking about panel alignment. For example, cars of the ’50s didn’t really fit so well, and trucks of the era fit worse. By the standards of that time they fit just fine, but today more than ever, good-as-new ain’t good enough.

When going for gaps on elderly trucks, there’s only so much that one can accomplish with factory-provided adjustments and shims. So, if and when you see, let’s say, a 1955 second-series Chevrolet that actually fits, you can be sure that someone worked hard for that.

In certain situations the bending of hinges can improve a door’s alignment. Thoughtful bending of the panel itself is also a common practice, but for high-level, over-restorative bodywork it’s rarely enough. For those who are desirous of better-than-new fitment, there’s really no getting around ityou’re going to have to cut things up. By that we mean metal must be added and/or subtracted here and there, as necessary.

For the time being we have a rolling chassis safely covered in the adjacent stall. We may choose to use it as an accurate fixture later on. For now, the bare-metal cab is affixed to an adjustable cab cart. With new Brothers rubbers in their proper places, the cab is leveled at a comfortable heightat least for dealing with doors.

    Check For Damaged Parts

Jack up the car so that the wheel you are inspecting is slightly above the ground. Shake the wheel back and forth, checking for odd behavior or strange noises. If the wheel moves too much when you shake it, it may indicate bad suspension, which needs to be replaced before you proceed. Bad suspension can also cause wheel alignment problems.

Also, listen for any rattling. Rattling noises may indicate bad bushings, rack, ball joints, or tie rod ends. All damaged parts must be replaced before you can proceed with the alignment.

Adjust The String So It Is Parallel To The Rear Wheels

Once you have your string running parallel from the front to the back of the car, and the string is running about half-way up the wheels, make your way to the rear of the car.

Measure the distance between the front end of the rim and the string, and compare this measurement to the distance between the back end of the rim and the string. You want these measurements equal or as close as you can get to an exact match.

Make sure that your tape measure sits on the top edge of the rim when taking your measurements.

Adjust your string accordingly until you have an equal measurement. Repeat the process on the other side of the car.

Keep in mind that you are only doing this step for the rear tires.

    Damaged Garage Door Hardware

    Door adjustment

Sometimes, the damage or wear and tear on a garage door is too advanced for any of these quick fixes. Inspect the door itself the material can become warped, rusted, or rotten. Next, check the springs. Broken springs can be replaced, just reorder them according to the model number of the garage door.

If you have carriage-style double doors, check the hinges to be sure they are not rusted or broken. These are some last resort DIY fixes for regular garage doors. If you live in an older home, you might not even be able to find replacement parts and end up needing to replace the entire door.

Fix 1 Adjust The Striker Plate

This 1. fix is actually a bad method, but even though its bad numerous owners used it since its fast and easy and because of this you should know about it. Adjust The Butt Hinge:

Some butt hinges are non-adjustable, but there are some that can be adjusted laterally. If you look on the side, you will see a Philips head screw. But before you try to turn this screw, check to see if there is a small grub screw as this locks the hinge in place so the door won’t move. I Adjusted The Hinges But My Door Is Still Not Aligned

Note that it may take a few tries to properly adjust all the hinges. If you still cant get your door squared up after a few attempts, you may just need new hinges. Hinges are usually inexpensive and aren’t hard to replace. Most companies will do the replacement for you at a low cost. You should ring at least two companies to compare service prices.

If you’re going to replace the hinges yourself, you will find it’s a lot easier if you leave the door sash on the frame and replace one hinge at the time. This way, your hinges will all line up.

Also make sure the diameter of the screw is the appropriate size for the holes on the hinge. Otherwise, over time, your door sash will sag down, forcing you to adjust or replace them again in the future.
