Tucked between the firewall and the dash on the inside of the vehicle, this radiator-like component is located in the plastic evaporator case. The electronic leak detector and refrigerant leak detection dye are the two preferred methods, used by professionals, to detect leaks in the evaporator. Attach the a/c gauge set to the vehicles service ports. Always follow the procedure in the service manual for your specific vehicle. Add one can of refrigerant, containing leak detection dye, to the system with the engine running and the a/c controls in the vehicle set for “MAX A/C”. It is important to add refrigerant only through the low-pressure side to avoid explosion of the can due to high pressure.
Test drive for 15 minutes with a/c on “MAX A/C. This will keep the pressures up, circulate the refrigerant dye through the system and help make the leak identifiable.

Main Causes Of Weak Airflow:
- Mold or mildew may have accumulated in the evaporator core from residual moisture that occurs during the cooling process. When this happens, air will have trouble reaching your air vents.
- A hose has come loose. This usually happens with the blower hose that supplies air to the blower unit.
- Ventilation fan is fried. If the fans not blowing, air wont be flowing very well.
- Seals. No, not those seals down by the pier. Core case seals, blower house seals or evaporator core case seals All can open up and diminish air flow. A/C ventilation systems are very sensitive and must remain sealed. Once theyre opened, the whole system is compromised.

Causes Of Low Refrigerant
There are a number of potential causes for low refrigerant in your cars AC system. Some refrigerant is lost naturally over time. It takes years, though, so if your car isnt that old or the system has been recharged recently and is now blowing warm air again, chances are good that youve got a leak somewhere.
There are two causes of AC system leaks age and moisture. While much of your air conditioning system is made of metal, including the high pressure lines, rubber is still used throughout. You have rubber O-rings, grommets, lines and more. The problem here is that rubber degrades over time and with exposure to heat and moisture. As that wear accelerates, the affected part will fail. Something as simple as a degrading O-ring can cause you to loose refrigerant surprisingly quickly.

Thats not the end of it, though. If you have a leak in your air conditioning system, its possible that moisture has entered the lines. Moisture in an automotive AC system is very bad. Carefully Spray Around Vacuum Hoses
Locate where all the vacuum hoses are connected on the intake manifold and spray around the connections of them. Even if they look good, there can be small cracks in them that are leaking. You can also follow the hoses and spray the other end of them. If the engine RPM gets higher or lower, you have definitely found a vacuum leak.

In my book Just Needs a Recharge: The Hack Mechanic Guide to Vintage Air Conditioning, I make the case that those A/C recharge $79.95 signs you see at service stations are perilously close to fraud. If a system needs to be recharged, its because the refrigerant has leaked out, so the leak first needs to be found, then needs to be fixed. The time for all that, plus the recharge itself, is always going to make the bill more than $79.95.
The best-case situation of the leak being caused by a bad o-ringquickly found and easily replacedis about as likely as a loose gas cap being the cause of your check engine light. Occasionally, however, you get lucky.
In the book, I describe using nitrogen to pressure-test an empty air conditioning system in order to find leaks. Ive long been surprised that this is not a widely used technique. Most of what you read online says either: A) You find leaks with a vacuum pump during the evacuation phase B) If you previously filled the system with oil with dye in it, and it worked for a while but now is leaking, you find leaks by using an ultra-violet light to look for the dye or C) You find leaks by using a chemical sniffer on a system that still has refrigerant in it.
I put a wrench on the fitting and found that it was very loose. A-ha! I tightened it up, re-pressurized the system, and watched the pressure gauges for a few minutes. It didnt take long to see the pressure drop by about 1 psi per minute.
Reason #: Your Fan Has Stopped Working
There is a fan in your air conditioning system that pushes air through the vents. If your fan isnt working, your system cant blow cool air. It can be as simple as a bad wire or as serious as a fan in need of replacement, but your A/C fan can require your entire dashboard to be taken apart. Its best to consult your mechanic if you think your fan is out of commission, since it can be easy to damage your dash board and interior systems trying to fix your fan.

How To Detect Leaks In A Circuit
Since refrigerant gas is a colorless substance, it is not possible to detect air conditioning leaks with the naked eye. Thus, it is necessary to apply professional methods that will allow you to identify for sure where the leaks occur. The detection methods are as follows:

The Compressor Clutch Does Not Engage
The clutch may not engage for several reasons, the most common being low refrigerant in the system, but it may also be an electrical issue.
Reason 1: Voltage. Voltage is not sent to the clutch when the air conditioning is turned on due to an open circuit in the electrical circuit.
Reason 2: Pressure switch. An air conditioning system pressure switch can disrupt the circuit if certain pressures are not met or if the switch is failing.
Reason 3: Input issue. More up to date systems are computer controlled and use numerous other inputs including vehicle interior and exterior temperature to determine whether or not to turn the compressor on.
You need to determine if there is refrigerant in the system.
Step 1: Turn the engine off.
Step 2: Install the gauges. Install the gauge set by locating the high and low side quick connections.
- Tip: The location of these vary on every car, but most of the time you will find the low side on the passenger side of the engine compartment and the high side towards the front. The size of the fittings are different so you will not be able to install the gauge set backwards.
Step 3: Observe the pressure readings on the gauges.
