Why Are Oil Changes Important?

While some cars consume hardly any engine oil, others can burn off or drip plenty. That’s why it makes sense to check your oil level frequently between oil changes, as running with a low oil level increases stress on the engine and can seriously reduce the working life of the oil and the engine.

Some modern cars have an electronic oil sensor that warns you when your motor oil is approaching the minimum safe level. But whether your car has one or not, it’s good practice to check your engine oil level manually on a regular basis, especially if you’re planning a road trip. After all, sensors and dash lights can both fail without you knowing about it.

To check your engine oil level, first make sure to park your car on level ground, then wait at least 10 minutes to let the oil drain out of the engine and back into the sump. Raise and secure the hood, then locate the top of the dipstick, which is usually pretty easy to see and to reach. Pull it out and use a rag or paper towel to wipe the end clean. Then replace it, making sure it goes all the way in, before immediately lifting it out and holding it in a horizontal position. Near the end of the dipstick there should be two lines, sometimes with a cross-hatched area in between. Ideally, the oil level should be at or near the highest line, though anywhere above the lower line is still OK.

How To Check Your Car’s Oil Step

Step 1: Turn Off the Car

First thing’s first, make sure your vehicle engine is off and that itâs been sitting for while on level ground. You want the engine to be cool, not hot like it had just been running. Go ahead and pop the hood!

Step 2: Find the Oil Dipstick

Next, youâll want to find the oil dipstick. Your dipstick usually has an orange or yellow top and sticks out near your engine. There should be a loop that you can grab onto, but there might not be. All cars are different, so you might have to consult your ownerâs manual if you are having trouble finding it.

Step 3: Pull Out the Dipstick

Grab the oil dipstick, pull it out, and wipe the end with a lint-free rag or a paper towel. When the dipstick is clean, dip it fully back into the pipe and pull it out again.

Step 4: Assess the Level

When you pull the dipstick back out, take a look at the bottom and see where on the stick the oil covers. There are two small fluid level lines marked on your oil dipstick letting you know where the minimum and maximum oil level should reach. There should be motor oil covering the dipstick up to the maximum mark.

Step 5: Adjust Oil Levels if Needed

If the tank requires a whole quart of oil to get it to the right level, itâs way too low and you should probably check in with a mechanic so they can make sure you don’t have an oil leak.

Materials That You’ll Need

Generally, checking and fixing oil pressure is a simple task compared to other issues with your car. Hence, youll only need a couple of tools and items to do this efficiently.

  • Pressure Gauge – A pressure gauge is the best tool to use to measure the performance of your engine when running. A normal reading of 10 PSI/1000 RPMs from your pressure gauge is handy whenever youre checking the status of your oil pump and sending unit. These two components are integral in the performance of your engine and the status of your oil pressure.
  • Engine Oil – If your oil pressure warning light is on, its usually because of low engine oil. Typically, adding sufficient engine oil is all you need to get the job done if there are no further breakages.

Either way, its best to detect any defects while its early to avoid accidents when your car is in use. You dont want to discover whats wrong when its already too late.

Here are some of the most common causes of low/high oil pressure:

Worn-out Engine Bearings

This is one of the most common causes of low oil pressure. High mileage engines are more prone to having low oil pressure. This is because worn out main and rod bearings allow clearances increase oil flow. This, in turn, reduces pressure.

Check your mileage and car engine regularly! Excessive clearances in between camshaft journals and cam bearings, leaking galley plugs and oil pump leakage might trouble you some more. Nothing beats a good new car engine.

Bad Oil Sending Unit

The oil sending unit is mostly responsible for controlling your cars pressure light or gauge . Depending on what appears on the pressure light or gauge, you will know whether your cars oil pressure is too high or too low.

Troubleshooting the oil sending unit is actually pretty simple. You just have to unhook the wire going to you oil sending unit. Then ground it with the key still in. If your gauge rises to its highest point, then all is well.
