Choose Your Lane Carefully
Become familiar with the purpose of each lane and give yourself adequate room to make turns or lane changes. If you know a turn or exit is coming up, move into the far right lane early enough to avoid cutting off other drivers.
Use the far left lane only for passing and for left exits. When traveling long distances at a consistent speed, the center lane is the safest option.
Be Aware Of Road Signs
The last and much-needed tip for learning driving is to be aware of the road signs. Safety signals and pavement markings are the parts of road signs. If you develop a better understanding of all road signs, driving will be easier for you. Driving on small roads is not the same as driving on big roads. Driving on small roads is commonly easy or does not stare much experience. But the driver must be quite experienced to drive on the highway. Though you are feeling more confident, never ignore the road signs during your learning period of driving.

Getting The Basics Down
Avoid Highways And Stick To Familiar Roads

During the initial stages of driving, it is recommended that you stick to driving on the routes you are thoroughly familiar with. If you go to unexplored areas, you need to pay extra attention to the direction you are going. As a beginner, you are better off having that utilized in the driving aspect than the navigation. Also try to avoid highways as the average speed of other vehicles is much higher. Driving at your leisurely pace in such an environment isnt very safe.

How To Drive A Car Downhill / Slope
In this section, we tell you how to drive car on slope, which is some of the trickiest things for new car drivers.
- While driving downhill, never apply brakes but use engine-braking to slow down. Overuse of brakes while going downhill would lead to increased wear and tear, and ultimately, brake failure.
- When parking your car on an uphill gradient, use the parking brake and leave your car in first gear.
- Similarly, when parking your car on a downhill, use the parking brakes and leave the gearlever in reverse position.
- Never turn off the engine or put the gear in a neutral position while going downhill as it gets difficult to control the vehicle
Driving A Car For The First Time And Every Time: Look Where You Want To Go
Most new drivers wont naturally do this. They are more likely to look at stuff they dont want to crash into, for some reason. I.e. looking where you dont want to go.
Why would you look where you dont want to go? When you are applying for university, do you look at all the universities where you dont want to go?
Anyway, its normal to be worried about hitting stuff when youre new.
But if you stare at parked cars and stuff, you will aim your car straight towards them. Try to look far ahead where you want to go and that will work much better.

Dont Take Your Friends Out Straight Away
As tempting as it is to pick up all of your friends and go on a road trip the moment you pass, we hate to break it to you, but it may not be the most sensible idea. Having your friends as your first passengers on your first journey alone will put a lot of pressure on you, as the driver, to avoid any mistakes. Especially if you are the first member of your friendship group to pass, you may feel as if you need to prove yourself and show off your skills.
Instead, take it upon yourself to jump in the car and go for a small journey alone. Most new drivers go around the block a few times or practice in a carpark or quiet industrial estate before embarking on their first trip on busy main roads. Particularly if you know you will need to drive to school, college or work in the morning, spend an hour or so the evening before slowly navigating yourself around your estate to get used to your car.
Car Driving Tips For New Car Owners
First come first : Congratulations on your New Car. You already know driving, but ideal is to maintain gear changing ratio and speed during the initial run
- First 1000 to 1500 Kms are considered the warm up period for your new car. Whether its Petrol or Diesel, ideal is to maintain speed to gear change ratio in equilibrium so as not to cross 2000 RPM during first 1500 Kms Driving
- Do not race the car engine during start-up. Move Gently. Ensure to not to speed up too quickly or stop with zoom by applying brakes too hard during the initial run atleast for the first one month or 1000 kms drive
- Though Covered in Point 1 – but during first 1500 kms, ensure maximum speed to be under 80 Kms. The reasons for above is to avoid strain on Engine, as the Piston Rings are rotating for the very first time and Oil gets aptly lubricated with the Engine Parts. Its best to avoid any kind of strain

Be An Observant Passenger
Learning how to drive starts with observing other drivers. Sure, its best to learn by doing, but you cant do before you watch.
Before you even start learning on your own, watch how the person driving the vehicle that youre in drives. Dont mention this to them at first as you want to see their natural driving behavior. Keep in mind that many people arent exactly perfect drivers, so this behavior is going to be an example rather than a guide.
After some time has passed, talk to the driver about observing them. They can explain what theyre doing while theyre doing it, and theyll likely pay more attention to their own driving. It might feel strange, but dont be afraid to take notes.
You should also observe other drivers on the road. Knowing common road conditions and how other drivers behave will prepare you for becoming a defensive and observant driver in the future. Remember, a practice track cant prepare you for the highway.
What To Do If You Get Stopped By The Police In The Us

In a worst case scenario, you will commit a traffic violation and be stopped by the police. You can be stopped for a variety of reasons, including driving over the posted speed limit through to dangerous driving and lights on your vehicle not working.
If you are being signalled to pull over by a police vehicle, which will usually be fairly obvious as itâll be right behind you with flashing lights, you should pull over as soon as it is safe to do so.
When your vehicle comes to a stop, you should remain in the vehicle, with your hands on the wheel and your seatbelt fastened. You should open your driver side window and if it is dark, turn on the vehicleâs interior lights. Do not get out of your vehicle or unfasten your seatbelt. Remain seated and wait for the the officer.
I have to admit that I was stopped once in the US for going over the posted speed limit. In my defence, we had just arrived in Yosemite National Park, the scenery was stunning, and the speed crept over the limit as we coasted downhill without me paying attention to it.
Unfortunately, the park ranger behind me was paying attention to my speed, so he pulled me over very quickly. Jess was not hugely impressed with me either.
This was affirmed, and I was then asked various questions, including providing my driverâs license, vehicle registration and ID .
I was also asked if I had been drinking or had taken any drugs, and if there were any weapons in the car. The answer was truthfully no to all these.

How Many Gears Do Manual Cars Have
Years ago, was normal for manual cars to have just four gears.
In theory, this would make them easier to drive than the cars of today, but back then youd also have to learn old-fashioned techniques such as double declutching as they didnt have synchromesh gearboxes.
Gearboxes were also much vaguer than today, making it more difficult to find gears.
Today, most cars have at least five gears, although six gears are becoming increasingly common.
Seven-speed manual gearboxes are rare but they do exist you can get one in supercars such as the Porsche 911 and Chevrolet Corvette.

Adjust Your Seat Belt Seat And Mirrors
Once you are in the car and well before you start it, you will need to adjust the seat to a position that is not too comfortable for you but also allows you to reach the pedals and access the gear lever.
It is recommended that the seat should be at a right angle, the seat belt should fit correctly to your height and body.
This means that you may have to raise or lower it as you see fit.
Adjusting the mirrors, both rear-view and side mirrors, is considered key to ensuring that you have better visibility.
Be Sure To Study The Gear Lever And Pedals Before Driving A Car
Learning how to execute the gears and make them without having to look at the lever will require you to know them perfectly, so that you will be able to drive a car very well.
This process is much more important in mechanical cars, as in automatic cars it is considered to be much easier and rarely the one that you will have to move it beyond the moment of departure, parking and arrival.
You must know the exact moment when to use each gear, the noise that the engine generates when it is the right moment to change gear.
The cars pedals could well be clutch, brake and accelerator in the case of mechanical cars.
All of these should be engraved in your memory, as you should bear in mind that pressing the wrong one can be very serious when driving a car.
