History Of The Vin System

Forms of vehicle identification had been in use since the 1950s, but each manufacturer had its own system, and it was of little help to most consumers and regulators.

The federal government implemented the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 115 in 1969 to provide uniformity in how auto manufacturers identified the chassis number and other vehicle information from the factory. This standard required carmakers to sink or emboss a VIN on every passenger car. In addition, a car’s VIN had to be visible to a person standing at the pillar of the left windshield.

After the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association and Volkswagen of America petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration , the agency considered expanding the system. So the NHTSA created a new standard effective with the 1981 model year.

All road vehicles sold must contain a 17-character VIN following a strict format. It’s a distinctive code consisting of 17 numbers and capital letters. In addition, VINs of any two vehicles built within 30 years cannot be the same.

NHTSA eliminated FMVSS No. 115 and placed all VIN requirements into 49 CFR Part 565 in 1996. Now, manufacturers must assign a VIN to each passenger car, multipurpose passenger vehicle, bus, truck, and motorcycle. Trailers, trailer kits, and incomplete vehicles must have identification numbers, too.

Red Flags To Look Out For When Buying A Used Car

Free Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Decoder & Lookup

Some things should be considered a deal-breaker or at least warrant an enormous price reduction. Look out for these red flags when buying a used car:

    • Has the car been previously written off? This means it was decided that repairs would cost more than the car is worth. If a car has been written off or issued a salvage title, theres a chance it has some invisible damage or shoddy repairs.
    • Is the car still under finance? If the car is still under finance, the seller should let you know. If you find it out through a car history report, you may want to dig deeper or find a different car.
    • Has the odometer been rolled back? This is a telltale sign the seller is trying to rip you off. Even if the odometer appears tampered with, it might be in your best interest to walk away.
    • Is it poorly maintained? If the car has a poor vehicle history, then its a long way from good as new and will likely not be as reliable as other options out there.

    Where Is The Vin Located

Most passenger cars have the VIN on the dashboard. It is usually positioned on the drivers side. If you want to see it better, look at it through the windshield. You should be standing outside the car.

Some manufacturers, however, position this number on the door pillar, at the drivers side. In such vehicles, you need to open the door to see it. Once you open the door, look at the area where the car door latches.

Also, some cars have their VIN under the hood. It is usually placed in front of the engine block. Besides, older vehicles have this number at the front end of the frame. This frame is on the drivers side, near the door.

Most motorcycles have their Vehicle Identification Numbers below the handlebars. You should see the number on the steering neck. But, other motorcycle manufacturers place it on the frame near the motor. Also, you might find it on the engine.

However, on semitrailers, you can find the VIN on the front part, the left side.

If you dont find this number on the vehicle, search it in the vehicle documents. It is always written on the vehicle title. Some individuals refer to this document as the Certificate of Title. This title is a legal document that establishes vehicle ownership.

You can also use the Certificate of Vehicle Registration document to find the VIN. It is a document provided by the Department of Motor Vehicle in every state. The report establishes a link between the vehicle and the owner.

My Vin’s Not Decoding Now What

If you have a legitimate VIN, it should decode, so the problem is usually typographical. Double check the VIN, make sure you have a 17-digit-long string of numerals and letters. Scan your VIN for the letters O, I, and Q, or o, i and q, in lower case. The VIN format doesn’t include these letters, because they’re too easily mistaken for the numbers 0, 1 and 9. So try replacing the necessary digits and trying again.

    Find Your Vehicles Vin

    Engine and Chassis Number Location
  • Check the lower drivers side portion of your windshield. Most vehicles have a VIN plate located in a small area in the dash. This should be visible to the naked eye, but you may need a flashlight or a magnifying glass if the plate is dirty, or if its dark out.
  • If you cant read the VIN plate on the dash, your next best bet is to check the drivers door jamb. This is the area between the inside and the outside of your car that is typically covered by the door when its shut. Here, you will find another VIN plate, as well as a white and yellow label that tells you the vehicles optimal cold tire pressure.
  • If both of those options are not available to you, either because the VIN plates are damaged or dirty, your next best bet is to check your documents. Your title, registration, and even your insurance cards have the VIN listed.
  • Now that you understand what your VIN is trying to tell you, you can march into your local auto parts store to get the right parts. To do this without looking foolish, youll need the eighth character, which is the actual engine code and the tenth character, which is the model year. Give these to your parts person and theyll be able to find what you need in no time.
