How Is Car Paint Damaged By The Sun

$8 Fix for Sun Damaged Car Paint

Im pretty fly for a white guy. But that pasty white skindoes come with enhanced possibility for being burned during outdoor activity. On our cruise last week, I brought cans of SPF 50 sunblock spray, toprotect said pasty white skin from being burned. And it worked.

The sunblock worked as a protective layer that blocked UV light from penetrating my skin, leading to burns. Without the sunblock, the skin would burn in an hour or so. Sun rays have the same damaging effects on your cars paint.

UV light is invisible and powerful. UV rays emit an electromagnetic spectrum wavelength that can be as small as 10 nanometers to as large as 400 nanometers. Thats basically a span of light smaller than visible light and longer than x-ray emissions.

Whats amazing is that the UV light that hits our skin and cars paint is less than 10 percent of the electromagnetic radiation that is produced by the sun.

This is the root source of paint damage. The UV radiation is a potent energy producer that stimulates a surface to react when its hit by the sun rays. It produces a quick burst of energy, which is given off as heat but also results in molecular bonds that break.

How To Fix Sun Damage On A Car

Having your car constantly out in the hot sun can cause itâs paint to fade or look lackluster, especially if you car is a dark color like black, dark blue or red. The best way to fix sun damage on a car is using a rubbing compound, which can be found at any auto parts store. Choose one that has a fine or very fine cut in order to get the best results. With a little elbow grease, you can restore your car back to its original beauty.

Step 1

Wait until the weather temperature is over 50 degrees before you attempt to apply rubbing compound. You donât want it to harden too quickly while you are still trying to work with it. Make sure to apply out of the sunlight itâs best to tackle this job in the garage.

Step 2

Add a teaspoon of rubbing compound to your buffer, directly on the pad. Move the buffer around the sun-damaged area before turning on to distribute some of the rubbing compound evenly.

Step 3

Turn the buffer on and gently and evenly run it over the sun-damaged area. Work in small 1-by-1 inch sections and buff completely before you move to the next section. Rubbing compound can get very dry and be hard to work with, so make sure you work in small patches rather than large areas.

Step 4

Wash the car with plain water and rub dry with a terry cloth. This is a good time to examine the paint and make sure that youâve gotten all of the spots evenly. If you notice a spot that you missed, simply repeat steps 2 and 3 again.

Wash Your Car Properly

Theres very little you can ever do for your car in terms of car care when you dont wash it first. Do you know how car washing using the bucket method has always delivered great results?

Well, it still does, and its actually your best option for the first step of the faded paint restoration process. This is because you can pay extra attention to how you wash the car while also using a professional sponge and car soap.

This will help you efficiently remove the contaminants that may be stuck to the car and interfere with the sun damaged paint restoration process. Just make sure that you dont simply leave your car wet as it is to dry on its own. This enables pesky water spots to form on the vehicles surface. Use a few microfiber towels or a leaf blower to dry your car after washing.

How Can Swirl Marks And Small Scratches Be Repaired By Polish

Auto damage and repair

Polish is a substance which is gritty and cuts the clear coating of a cars paint until both the swirl mark and scratch matches the thickness of the surrounding paint. The clear coat is removed while smaller scratches are filled with the residue clear being cut by the polishing compound. This technique is often referred to as leveling.

This is the same as using something like low-grit sandpaper to repair a swirl mark whilst not damaging the cars paint. If you can feel a scratch through your fingernail, it must be removed with sandpaper which is best done by professionals with experience in paint repair, like a detailer.

Factors That Affect Sun Damage Repair

  • Affected area. The two most common places that see sun damage are painted on the roof/hood of your car, and interior vinyl or leather near windows. Your cars exterior absorbs most of the sunlight, and the windshield can reflect and increase light intensity on the dashboard. Generally speaking, it costs more to repair sun damage to vinyl than fixing faded or cracked paint.
  • Type of paint. If the damage is mostly on your car paint, then you need to get it repaired. Modern cars typically use either urethane or acrylic lacquer. Urethane paints are newer and more durable but are more expensive than traditional acrylic paints.
  • Extent of damage. Some sun damage is very mild and can be fixed with at-home products like wax or color protectors. More extensive damage may cause cracking and chipping in paint and vinyl. The greater the sun damage, the more expensive it will be to fix.
  • Make/model. Obviously, your cars make and model will affect how much it costs to reupholster the interior or repaint the exterior. Newer cars will likely be more expensive to repair and certain materials, such as leather, will also be more expensive to repair.
  • Type of upholstery. As you might expect, the type of upholstery you have will affect costs. Materials such as leather will cost more to repair and replace than materials such as vinyl or urethane.

How Are Swirl Marks Generated

In most cases, swirl marks appear after washing your vehicle and drying it off with a towel that has microscopic particles of dirt and dust on it or using a used mitt at the car wash. Therefore, it is always recommended to use the two-bucket method when washing your car.

One myth is that if you use a microfiber towel, you wont generate swirl marks. This, unfortunately, is not true. Even though microfiber towels help reduce the potential of swirl marks appearing, they still can appear. Regardless, it is still safer to use a clean microfiber cloth whenever drying a vehicle with a non-protected clear coat.

Other common causes of swirl marks appearing includes:

Buffing or polishing with used/dirty pads

Using aggressive cutting polish compounds or paint cleaners

Using dirty chamois or polyester applicators

Using a dirty duster for dusting your car

Washing your car at automatic car washes

Not rinsing off your car before washing it

Covering your car with a dirty cover

Can Swirl Marks be Prevented?

The truth is it is impossible to eliminate the risk of getting swirl marks on your car completely. There are, however, several things you can do to reduce the likelihood of it occurring.

Why A Ceramic Coating Is The Best Paint Protection Option For Faded Paint

How To Repair Paint Damage On Your Car

If youve fixed the faded paint correctly, itslikely that youve removed a little of the clear coat at the sametime. This will leave the paint surface exposed to the elements more thanbefore. Applying a product like Armor Shield IX on the recentlyrepaired faded paint, youre actually providing an incredibly hard layerof protection.

A nano-ceramic coating like Armor Shield IX leaves a microscopic layer of protection that has exceptional hydrophobic properties, is highly heat resistant, and is harder than any other paint protection product. It also helps to enhance the shine and luster of paint and reduces the time required for washing the vehicle.

How Badly Oxidized Is It

Not all oxidized paint is equal.

Oxidation can be broadly classified into three grades. See which description best fits the state of your car:

Mild Oxidation

Mild oxidation manifests as dull-looking patches. The affected areas may have begun to look slightly discolored.

In this case, car paint restoration shouldnt be much of a challenge.

Moderate Oxidation

At this stage, the clear coat has started to peel or flake away. On surfaces where it has peeled away entirely, the surface will be dull.

Youll be able to restore it if you have some car detailing experience. On the other hand, novices might find restoration and clear coat repair above their current skill level.

Severe Oxidation

In this case, the layer of color above the primer has worn away, exposing it as a result. The primer may have started to degrade, too.

To deal with this situation, youll have to sand down to the bare metal and apply fresh paint.

Repairing severe oxidation goes beyond restoration. Its a long and complex process thats best left to the professionals who have previous experience with this and know exactly what it needs for the best possible results.

What Causes Car Paint To Bubble And Peel

Bubbles, also called osmotic blistering, are created by paint moisture leaking through the paints surface. Temperatures in the neighborhood of 40 degrees Fahrenheit or humid conditions play a role. A layer of dry skin is caught between the spray and liquid. Few paint particles became stuck or damaged throughout the drying process.

You may have noticed that the paint on your automobile is peeling for various reasons. An excessive amount of UV radiation from the sun or an inadequate paint job are the most common causes of fading. For instance, if you had your automobile repainted after it was delivered from the factory and the paint had not enough dry time, the paint may peel away from the vehicle.

Typically, three levels of protection are applied to a contemporary automobile: paint, priming, and a protective clear coat. Automobile manufacturers modified the manner they applied paint in the 1980s and 1990s. It produced some issues with the primer, paint, and in certain cases, even the clear coat.

The primer, which serves as the foundation layer, protects the metal beneath it. The paint is the color coat, and it acts as a protective shell, shielding the paint from scratches and oxidation and aiding in the preservation of the paints shine and luster retention.

Scratches and dents could also cause the paint to peel away from the surface underneath them. All that is required is a minor chip in the clear coat to start the installation of delaminating the vehicle.

Inspect The Depth Of The Scratch

The severity of the scratch determines how you fix it. If its a minor abrasion, which doesnt go through the clear coat to the paint underneath, it can be fixed by simply filling the gap in with a thick coat of wax. No harm done!

If the scratch reached deep down to scrape paint off and expose metal underneath, you need to proceed and paint that sucker!

What Youll Need For Diy Paint Chip Repair

At an auto parts store, youll find a display of auto touch-up paints. Look up your cars year, make and model in the booklet at the display. Youll find a list of factory colours that cars like yours were painted that year. If you have a white vehicle and there is only one white listed for it, just buy that one. If you dont know the colour number for your car, youll have to find it on your vehicle identification plate. This can be challenging. The plate may be located under the hood on the cowl, near the radiator shield or on the jamb of the drivers door. Some owners manuals will tell you where to look, or a quick call to your dealer will help.

Once you find the number, buy a small bottle of touch-up paint. If you cant find the correct colour at the display, check with the dealer. Dealers often carry colours for the cars they sell. Also, buy a small can of auto primer. Now just follow our photo sequence to fix that chip, and remember, dont do this repair in the direct sun or if the temperature is below 10° C.

Tip: If you can only find spray paint with the right colour number, you can use it by spraying a bit of paint into the cap and applying it with a fine artists brush.

Peeling Or Cracked Paint

Eventually, the clear coat on a car will weaken and start to peel off. This happens most often when a car is kept outside in the sun for extended periods of time, or if its poorly resprayed. In my experience, this occurs more frequently on darker colored cars. Im pretty sure thats because they get hotter in the sun and then cool off at night, resulting in a more radical change in temperature throughout each day. Paint may also start to crack or peel from impact damage.

The only way to fix this is to have the area sanded down and resprayed, either at a body shop or by a mobile spray paint service. This can be quite expensive, especially if the damage is all over. So, I suggest that you dont spend the money if the peeling has been caused by sun damage. By the time this happens on a car, it usually has too many miles on it for it to be worth it.

Follow the instructions on the product you bought to apply the paint. Typically, this will either involve a pen-like applicator or a nail polish-like brush application. Your product may even offer both, in which case you should select one based on how wide the abrasion is.

Youll have some overlapping paint around the damaged area. This is fine! Just try to minimize the overlap as much as you can. Wipe away any abundant excess.
