How Do Car Scratch Remover Products Work

  • Scratch and Swirl Removal products usually consist of formulations containing mild or specialty polishing agents designed to remove light surface imperfections and may contain wax or clear polymers to fill in deeper abrasions.
  • These products are usually one-step, single application formulas, that allow quick and easy paintwork finish improvement. These products can be used for localized repair to a single scratch or can be applied like a conventional wax for overall car finish restoration. Its important to keep in mind that the product performance is limited due to the mild cleansing and polishing attributes of these formulations, meaning that these scratch removal formulations might not be able to remove stronger oxidation, in which case polishing or rubbing compound should be used.

Using A Scratch Removal Product For Small Scratches

  • 1Wash your car so there is no dirt or debris left in the scratch. It is important to make sure that the area is completely clean before you apply any product to it or try to buff the area. Any dirt or debris left on the surface when you buff it will result in more scratches.XResearch source
  • Spray your car with a hose before applying any soap to it. Then, use a sponge or brush meant for washing cars to work the soap in. Rinse the soap off completely and dry your car with microfiber towels. Be sure to use soap designed for washing cars.
  • 2Purchase a scratch-removal product or kit. You can buy scratch-removal products at auto supply stores or in the auto supply section of large one-stop stores. These products are often sold as a scratch-removal kit that includes the scratch-removal solution and a buffing pad to apply the product.XResearch source
  • If you are unsure about what types of scratch removal product to buy, ask a sales associate for help. Employees who work in auto supply stores are usually knowledgeable about these products.
  • A microfiber towel is often a good choice for applying scratch removal products since they are gentle on the surface of your car.
  • Some products even come with a mechanical buffing tool that you can use to get rid of the scratches.

Use Toothpaste To Remove Scratches & Scuffs

Just grab a damp, soft cloth and a smear of toothpaste, and you can erase scratches and scuff marks on your car without much work involved. This trick works best if the scratches and scuff marks haven’t fully penetrated the clear coat of your vehicle’s paint. If you can grab hold of a scratch with your fingernail, it might be too big to buff out with toothpaste.

Toothpaste works to sand down the uneven surface of your car’s glossy sheen and fills in the gap. Just make sure the surface around the area is cleanyou don’t want to buff particles of dirt and debris into your paint. If there is foreign paint on the outside, the toothpaste will act as an abrasive to help remove that, too.

Toothpaste Is An Alternative To Buffing The Whole Car

Let’s face it. Most of the time we don’t want to drop the money on having our cars professionally polished no matter how nice the car will look afterwards. And with the wide variety of products out there, most of us also don’t want to run out to the store to find the right one that can take care of our scratches.

That’s where a simple tube of toothpaste comes in. Everyone has a tube somewhere, so there’s no running to the store and searching through isles of different products from fillers to rubbing compound to polishing compound.

We recommend whitening toothpaste. It’s slightly more abrasive than regular toothpaste, but any toothpaste will do. This abrasiveness is very similar to the abrasives found in your typical container of car polish. The abrasive action can remove microscopic layers of film and clear coat, polishing what you once thought to be a permanent scratch to a brilliant shine! And depending upon which toothpaste you use, will leave the car with a minty fresh feeling!

    Is Removing Paint Scratches Easy

The only easy thing about this question is its answer: HELL NAW.

Every automotive paint scratch is unique in its own way, and therefore requires different levels of prep care and repair. Even seemingly identical-looking scratches can have varying degrees of paint mutilation, its just hard to determine the extent of the damage because its lurking beneath the surface.

Automotive scratches can range anywhere from light clear coat imperfections and tiny slivers in wax coatings and paint sealants, to full-blown, metal gouges of catastrophic proportions. Resting somewhere in-between are spider webbing scratches, which can oftentimes be found etched into clear coat, with more extreme cases penetrating into the paint itself.

Use A Fine Brush To Touch Up Paint

If you choose to apply the touch-up paint yourself, make sure you use a fine-bristle paint brush to apply your paint. If one was not supplied in your touch-up kit, you can find inexpensive micro brushes at most auto parts retailers.

Using your fine-bristle brush, apply the touch-up paint gently and carefully to cover the desired area. When finished, allow it to dry for between 8 and 12 hours. Once dry, you can apply a wax layer to help seal and protect the newly applied paint.

    Apply The Repair Product

Remove Scratches & Scuff Marks in Your Car

With the product ready, you can start repairing the scratch. The precise steps you should follow depend on what product youre using.

If using acrylic scratch remover or nail polish, fill the scratch in and wipe away any excess. The product should dry hard and clear, and there should be minimal buffing needed.

If using cerium oxide, fill the scratch in begin gently buffing it. The drill and rubber polishing wheel make buffing much easier. Continue filling in the scratch with more cerium oxide and buffing until the result is a clear and smooth repair. For best results, apply the cerium oxide to a cloth and then to the scratch. If the solution gets elsewhere on the glass, it can actually cause small scratches.

If using the homemade mixture, follow the instructions for cerium oxide. Be even gentler when buffing, though, and plan on going through many more applications.
