How To Find a Car Invoice Price (No Email Required)

The invoice price is the amount of money an automaker charges a dealer for a vehicle. It may include additional charges such as destination charge and optional equipment cost.

Typically, the auto dealer pays less than the invoice price of a car because of added incentive bonuses, cash back or vehicle rebates, allowances, and discounts.

Dealers also enjoy a holdback amount that the manufacturer repays them for selling a vehicle, but it inflates the price they pay for the vehicle, and they are reimbursed later. The dealer holdback percentage is typically 2-3 percent and it is not offered by all auto manufacturers.

But What Do Dealers Really Pay

The price listed as the dealer invoice price is almost always higher than what the dealer actually pays to a manufacturer for a car due to a situation known as holdback a murky, grey area that dealers are reluctant to discuss with customers and manufacturer-to-dealer credits that are not passed on to customers. Holdback provides a little padding to dealer profits by artificially elevating the paper cost of a car, usually by 1 to 3 percent. Holdback is a payment from the manufacturer to the dealer that is paid at some point after the sale of the vehicle, normally quarterly. Dealers will almost never disclose the holdback amount. We recommend that you use it for your own reference, not as a bargaining chip in negotiations. The point is, this shadowy holdback situation makes buyers think that paying invoice price is getting the car at the dealer’s cost, but that’s not necessarily the case. But remember real-world transaction prices are set by supply, demand, and negotiating skills. Negotiating down to invoice regardless of holdback or rebates might be a great deal, or a lousy one. It all depends on the car.

What Is Dealer Invoice Price

Invoice price, often just called the dealer cost, is the price on the invoice sent by the manufacturer to the dealer when the car comes from the factory. This price isn’t always disclosed to buyers directly.

That means it’s up to you to figure out how to find the dealer invoice price. One of the best ways to determine what the invoice price is to look at Consumer Reports. However, before investigating this matter further, it’s time to learn a bit more about the invoice price and how it affects your car buying experience.

Is Car Invoice Price Accurate On Websites

Not really. Sites like Edmunds that provide the estimated true car value do so with available but limited data.

The invoice a dealer gets from the manufacturer contains additional charges that may not be mentioned by the true car value research website. Thus, the information is not accurate.

The invoice price of any new car is the price that the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car, reports Car and Driver. If a buyer pays more than the invoice price of the car, then the dealer gets to keep the profit, as does the salesperson that sold the car. However, you can, in some cases, negotiate the cars price to lower than the invoice amount.

Why Doesn’t The Dealer Pay Invoice

Several dealers pay less than what’s listed on the official invoice price of the vehicle when buying the cars from the manufacturer. Dealers do not usually advertise factory-to-dealer incentives to the public, making it hard for consumers to find out if one is available. They will share customer rebates and cash because theyre publicly advertised and a way to draw traffic to the dealership.

When you see a meager price on a new car, look in the fine print and see if the dealer used the incentive to get to the advertised price. Doing this will let you know if there is an incentive on that specific make or model vehicle.

You can also visit Edmunds to determine if a vehicle has a rebate and incentive. The information found on the site is up to date and very accurate.

Always remember that the factory invoice is not the dealers new car cost. Taking a little time and doing your research will save you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars when buying your next new car, truck, minivan, or SUV.

A vehicle’s MSRP or “manufacturer’s suggested retail price is the amount or “sticker price” that the automaker provides to the dealer as the recommended cost to offer the customer. This figure doesn’t include any of the vehicle’s additional options or upgrades, however. How To Figure A Dealers True New Car Cost

Information needed to calculate a dealers actual new car cost:

  • Factory Invoice Price of vehicle Find it on .
  • Dealer Holdback Figure the amount with my new car chart.
  • Rebates & Incentives Check the manufacturers website for a rebate or incentive on the vehicle you are interested in.

You can find the factory invoice price at Edmunds pick out the car you want once you get the vehicles page. Scroll to the Build and Price button. Sometimes they put vehicles up before they receive the invoice price information, and sometimes they will sell the button to an advertiser, so you have to build the car on their page. Dont fret you may have to come back at a later time. Here is a picture that shows how to locate the information.

Once you have the above information on the vehicle, you want to buy. Figuring the true cost of any new car is a simple formula:

As you can see from the example above, the dealers actual cost of the car is $20,742.22, which is a lot less than the factory invoice price of $22,239.00. Its $1,496.78 lower than the dealers invoice price, to be exact.

If you can buy the car for the dealers actual new car cost, you would save $4,096.78 off the sticker. This translates to a $113.80 monthly savings on a 36-month car loan with no interest.

In addition to, or even before, asking the dealership, you should perform some of your own research on the factory invoice. Sites to consult include:

  • Edmunds: Head over to Edmunds and look up the True Market Value of the vehicle. This is not the invoice, but it’s a reliable pricing tool that will give you a good idea of the invoice price.
  • CarsDirect: CarsDirect is another site that offers a vehicle search page that will show the MSRP and estimated invoice price. Check out my full review here.

Factory Invoice Price Versus New Car Dealer Cost

Many car buyers believe a new cars factory invoice is the bottom line for which a dealer will sell a new vehicle this is not true!

Car dealers want you to believe this myth, but the truth is that hundreds of cars are sold well below a new cars invoice price every day.

If you want to see for yourself, pick any car youre interested in buying and follow the steps in my article on how to get car dealers to compete online for your business.

If you havent done your homework, you will be at a disadvantage when negotiating a new cars price with a dealership. The dealer knows the cost of the vehicle, and you dont.

When buying a new car, truck, or SUV, knowing what the dealer paid for it will put you on a level playing field.

Car dealers and their salesmen love when someone walks into a dealership with their chest all bowed up and shouts something like, Ill buy that car for $300 over factory invoice and not a dime more, or Im walking!

When you walk through the door and make a statement like the one above, youre unintentionally letting everyone in the dealership know you dont have a clue about what youre doing. Youre most likely a weak negotiator. Salespeople will be killing each other to be the ones to sell you a car.

Dont get me wrong paying the factory invoice price for a new car is much better than spending the total sticker price for the vehicle.

The dealer invoice is, in theory, the price a car dealer pays to buy a car from the manufacturer directly, and appears on the invoice from the manufacturer. The reality is a little more complicated, as we’ll reveal. But it’s important to recognize that an invoice price is different than MSRP , and also doesn’t include any dealer mark-up, destination charge, tax, title, licensing or any registration fees.

Is The Invoice Price A Good Deal

Getting the INVOICE PRICE on a new car.. what you should know

In some cases, yes. For example, if the car that youre buying is in high demand, then you could be lucky to even get to the invoice price, to begin with. In that case, buying the car at invoice would be a good idea.

But considering there are factors like holdback and other incentives that dealers get from the manufacturer, you could be leaving money on the table by accepting the invoice price. According to Car Direct, you should pay no more than 5% over the cars invoice, if not much less, in order to get a good deal. So anything less than the invoice price would be great, if not ideal.

Buying A Car With A Rebate And Dealer Incentive

Now lets take this one step further. There may also be a CUSTOMER REBATE or CASH BACK attached to the vehicle youre looking at, along with a hidden factory-to-dealer incentive.

Most people use the rebate or cashback to lower the price of the car so they can receive an even deeper discount from the list price.

Not doing your homework first can prevent you from substantial savings when buying your next new car or truck.

One Last Consideration: Dealer Cost

This goes back to the caveat we mentioned above. There is a difference between the invoice price and dealer cost when it comes to new vehicles. In the general sense, one can reasonably say the invoice price means thats the price the dealer will pay for the car in question. However, the true amount the dealer pays is still probably lower than the invoice price.

Can A Retailer Charge More Than Msrp

Yes. As the MSRP acronym spells out, the figure is the “suggested” price, not the maximum price. Let’s say there’s a highly anticipated model coming out and the initial inventory will be limited. Some dealerships will use this as an opportunity to make an extra profit and add a “market adjustment” that raises the selling price of the vehicle. More commonly, you may come across a vehicle on the lot that has a number of dealer-installed options, such as wheel locks, all-weather floor mats and a cargo net. These items are bundled together and will raise the price of the vehicle.
