When To Water A Battery

How To Correctly Add Water to Car Battery -Jonny DIY

If you wonder when is the best time to refill it, experts usually recommend it after it is fully charged. How much water goes in a battery? At this full point, you can refill the additional water as high as possible.

Absolutely do not refill when the accumulator is in the state of charging or discharging this is extremely dangerous! Because the acid will boil over when charging, adding water will cause the fluid level of this one to rise simultaneously, and it may splash out or exceed the safe threshold.

As for the frequency of refilling, it will depend on the frequency of use and weather conditions. For example, you will use the car for an hour a day or 1 to 2 days a week refilling only needs to be done about 1 to 2 times a month.

You should do this task once a week if you use the car regularly all day, Or in the summer when the temperature is high, the speed of water evaporation is also faster.

Is Distilled Water Useful In An Inverter Battery

Distilled water is necessary to keep your inverter battery from corroding. Without distilled water, your inverter battery will rust and lose performance.

Now that you know how to make distilled water for inverter battery, you can rest assured that your batteries will stay charged and ready to use. Distilled water is also a great backup plan in case of an emergency, so be sure to keep some on hand just in case.

By Step Process On: How To Make Distilled Water For A Car Battery

Here I will explain you step by step process of how to make distilled water for a car battery? lets see how to make distilled water for a car battery.

Step-01:

First, you need to gather all of the supplies that you will need in order to distill water for your car battery. This includes a large pot, an oversized glass lid, ice, a measuring cup, and a closed container.

Step-02:

Next, you need to fill the pot with enough water to make sure that the glass lid will float. Once the water is boiling, the steam will need to be collected in order to distill the water.

Step-03:

The steam will collect on the underside of the glass lid and will drip down into the pot. In order to speed up the condensation process, you can add ice to the glass lid.

Step-04:

Once the water has been collected, you can use a measuring cup to scoop it out and pour it into a closed container. This will help to preserve the distilled water.

How Often Should I Add Water To My Car Battery

There is no fixed rule to how often you should check your car battery water level. The suitable frequency will depend on:

  • battery age, older batteries tend to require more maintenance.
  • quality of the battery, better quality batteries lose water slower then poor quality.
  • air temperature, the hotter the ambient temperature the quicker the water loss.
  • Usage, most of the water loss will be during charging, so the more starting events the more the battery will be discharged and then charged.

We recommend that you start out with checking your battery at regular intervals, such as weekly and recording this on a calendar. Overtime you will notice a pattern to when you refill the battery, and this will give you the frequency for the future.

So, if you check every week, but only need to add water every sixth week then your watering interval will be every six weeks and you can start to increase the intervals between your inspections. You would need to increase this if the air temperature increases or you start to use your car more often.

If you notice that your battery needs more and more frequent water refills then this can be an indication that there is a problem with the battery, or possibly the charging system. At this point it is worth getting it checked out by a professional mechanic.

How To Make Distilled Water

Distilled water is water that has been boiled to become steam and then cooled to become water again. It’s then free of minerals and salts. Distilled water is used in car batteries and in steam irons. Distilled water prevents the iron from getting clogged up inside from minerals. It also has various medical and industrial uses. Some people like to use distilled water to make clear ice cubes. Here’s how to make distilled water in your kitchen.

  • 3 to 5 gallon stainless-steel pot with a stainless-steel cover
  • Put the baking rack on the bottom of the stainless-steel pot.
  • Fill the pot half way with tap water.
  • Place the glass bowl in the pot, so that it floats on the surface of the water. The baking rack should ensure that the bottom of the glass bowl doesn’t touch the pot.
  • Turn the pot cover upside down and place it on top of the pot.
  • Fill the inverted pot cover with ice.
  • Bring the water to a boil and let it boil for about 45 minutes, replacing the ice as necessary. As the water boils it becomes steam. The steam will hit the cold lid of the pot and be cooled down to become water again. Some of the water will drip into the glass bowl. That’s the distilled water.
  • Turn off the gas. Remove the lid from the pot. Using gloves, remove the glass bowl carefully — it will be very hot.
  • Allow the distilled water in the bowl to cool down and then you can store it in bottles.

While a battery should only be filled after it is completely charged, you should also check the water level before charging to make sure there is just enough water to cover any exposed plates. After charging, add enough water to bring the level to the bottom of the vent, about ¾ below the top of the cell.

Its important to note that battery owners should never add sulfuric acid to their battery. During normal operation batteries will only consume water and not sulfuric acid. When your batterys electrolyte is observed to be low, filling the battery with water will keep the battery healthy and safe for use.

    How To Water Batteries

How often you need to replenish water in a lead-acid battery depends on how often you use it. The battery of a forklift that runs all day, every day, may require a weekly watering, for instance. With use, the water evaporates, reducing the batterys effectiveness and increasing the risk of battery damage.

So, its important to check water levels regularly after the battery is charged, keeping in mind that hot temperatures accelerate water loss.

Batteries should be watered while gassing or at the end of a charge cycle and should be filled to about a quarter inch below the bottom of the vent well.

To assure safety, make sure that only personnel who have been trained in lead-acid battery maintenance can water batteries.

Avoid watering batteries by hand. Hand watering is cited as the most common factor associated with improper battery watering. Instead, use a single-point watering system, such as Crowns V-Force® Battery Watering System, which ensures that batteries are watered to the correct level.

Battery watering monitors, also available from Crown, feature LEDs that blink to indicate when the electrolyte level is good and go out when water is needed.

A single-point watering system reduces the risk of overwatering or underwatering, which can damage batteries. And the V-Force system reduces watering time by about 75%, compared to hand watering.

What Should The Water Level Be On A Battery

The proper method recommended by most battery manufacturers is to add enough water so that the cell plates are completely submerged, but not so much that the water is up to the battery case cell cap vents. The proper fill level, according to battery manufacturers, is approximately 1/4-inch below the fill well bottom.

How To Check Water Level In The Battery

Here are few things you need top know about checking the water levels in your car:

    • First you have to locate the battery. There e are batteries that are located near the engine compartment and is behind the front bumper of the wheels of the car. The highly expensive cars have the battery that is located in the trunk that is the isolated compartment.
    • Before you check the levels of water you need to clean all the dirt from the top of the battery. It is very important to do so because you need to take care that nothing can enter in your battery cells when you will open them.
    • You can clean the outer part of the battery with the paste of baking soda and water. In order to clean properly then you simply take out the battery from the car and then clean the battery. This is the safest way to have the best type of cleaning of your battery. After the cleaning you can install back the battery at its place.
    • After the cleaning is finished then you are free to open the ports of the battery. It is simple to remove the battery ports by screw driver or plastic putty knife. There are many batteries that have caps that can be removed by twisting the cap.
    • You need to look down into the ports and see the levels. If you are having unequal levels then it is time to bring the level equal.

How Do I Check My Car Batterys Electrolyte Levels

Once you open the vent cap and battery cap, you will be able to observe the individual lead plates in each cell.

You will always notice three types of electrolyte levels in rechargeable batteries.

    They are:

    • Low: This is when the electrolyte solution is so low that the lead plates are exposed. If the plates arent immersed, they need more water.
    • Normal: This is when the electrolyte is about 1cm above the lead plates. Do not add more water at this point.
    • Maximum: This is when the fluid level is almost touching the bottom of the filler tubes. It is best to stop filling before this stage.

Distill Tap Water With A Glass Bowl

  • 1Fill a 5-gallon stainless steel pot about halfway full with tap water.
  • 2Place a glass bowl in the water. Be sure it floats. The bowl should not touch the bottom of the pot.
  • If the bowl doesn’t float, remove it from the water and set a round baking rack on the bottom of the pot. Then place the bowl back in the water
  • 3The water in the pot must be boiling before going to the next step. This is to boil off chemicals such as methanol and ethanol.
  • 4Create a condensation effect with a hot/cold barrier. You can do this by inverting the pot’s lid and filling it with ice. When hot steam hits the cold lid, it will create condensation.
  • 5Boil the water in your pot. As the water continues to boil, it will cause steam to rise and condense on the pot’s lid. The condensation will drip into the bowl. Allow the distillation process to continue until you have enough distilled water in the bowl for your needs.
  • 6Watch the water collecting in the bowl. This bowl water will be hot but should not boil. If the bowl water begins to boil, turn down the heat on the stove so that just the pot water is boiling.
  • 7Remove your pot from the heat and take off the lid.
  • 8Take the bowl of distilled water out of the pot of boiling water. Use caution when doing this so you do not burn yourself. You can allow the water to cool before removing the bowl, if you prefer.

    Convert Rainwater To Drinking Water

  • 1Put a large, clean container outside to catch the rainwater.
  • 2Leave the container outside for 2 full days to allow the minerals to dissipate.
  • 3Store the distilled water in clean jugs. Note: While this method can produce drinkable water, it’s possible for pollutants and harmful bacteria to remain in the water. It’s always safest to filter, boil, or chemically treat rainwater before drinking, unless you know it’s safe otherwise.
  • Dont Refill Your Car Battery With Tap Water

Never use tap water when topping a car battery. Filling with water from the tap could damage it. Tap water contains impurities such as minerals which collect on the plates in the batterys cells reducing its capacity and usable life.

Professional auto mechanics and car battery manufacturers recommend using pure water such as deionized water or distilled water for filling car batteries.

In case of an emergency and there are no readily available sources for deionized water or distilled water, use rain water instead when possible.
