How to fit a rearward-facing car seat with a seatbelt – Which? guide

The car seat market is packed with so many different models and makes that it can be confusing to know where to start. But one innovation that has proved to be an instant hit with parents is the ability to rotate the seat 360 degrees

There are so many benefits to using a 360-degree car seat. Being able to turn the seat to face you makes it infinitely easier to get a wriggly baby, mid-tantrum toddler or reluctant child safely strapped in, without breaking your back bending over in an awkward position. Its also handy for switching between rear-facing and forward-facing modes a mechanism you can usually do one-handed, rather than having to take the seat out of the car and refit it.

Anything that makes life with young children that bit easier gets the thumbs up from us, but how do you choose the right 360-degree rotating car seat for you and your child? Here are the things to consider

Limit Car Rides & Seat Use

Newborns should not be in a car seat for more than 60-90 minutes. If you have a long ride ahead, take frequent pit stops to take the baby out of the seat. After you arrive home, take the newborn out of the car seat and put them in a crib or bassinet. Newborns should not be sleeping in a car seat, as seats are not designed for that purpose.

Installing A Rear Facing Car Seat

Your Guide to the Guide 65 Car Seat Installation
  • 1 Most rear-facing seats consist of two parts: the base and the infant carrier. You will install the base, the part that remains in the car. Follow the manufacturers instructions for removing the carrier from the base. Usually, there is simply a lever or button to activate.
  • 2Anchor the base to your car’s back seat. Many car seat bases include an attached belt with two hooks that can latch onto designated spots near your cars seat belt area. If your car manufacturer included these, snap the hooks onto the metal bars at those designated spots.XTrustworthy SourceNational Highway Traffic Safety AdministrationU.S. government agency responsible for writing and enforcing Federal Motor Vehicle Safety StandardsGo to source
  • Tighten the anchor belt attached to the base until the base is snug against the seat.
  • Check the manufacturer’s instructions if you aren’t sure if your car or seat has this option, or how to use it.
  • There may also be a place to feed the cars seat belt through the base for added security.XResearch source
  • Read the instructions to study where you are supposed to put the belt if you aren’t sure.
  • Every vehicle and seat is different, so it’s important to get this right.
  • Not latching the seat belt correctly can increase the risk of the child getting injured in an accident.
  • Most infant carriers have level indicators. Once yours is in place, read this level to see if the seat is at the correct angle for the babies weight/height/age.

Can You Manually Move An Electric Seat In A Car

    Image taken by: usedcars

It is possible to manually move an electric car seat, but it is best to have it repaired by a professional at some point.

Moving a power seat on your own is possible, but it will necessitate the removal of some parts of the seat. The use of a powerful power drill is critical for this task because it will allow you to move the seat much faster. You will learn how to troubleshoot and repair the seat in this article to regain power functionality. It depends on the model, but the process of disassembling the seat will be different. A blown fuse or a bad connection to the battery may be the source of the problem, but this method works only if the problem is not in the seat itself. In the case of a failed power motor, disassembling it can be used to replace it. Its possible that the main power connector to the seats is loose.

Test the connection with a ground lamp and power supply pins. If it is not working properly, mark its position before replacing it. Even if youre not able to use it, its very likely that a problem elsewhere in the car has been resolved. Because of the ease with which they are connected, motor wires are typically ground and power wires. If power is not available, a faulty control switch must be replaced. This is a cheap option because you wont have to worry about buttons and the plastic shroud youll need. A 12V battery, such as the one used in a power drill, can be used to create a power seat.

Position : Rear Seat Behind The Driver

If possible, use one of the other rear seats. If you use this seat, you may have to get the child in or out of the car on the road side of the vehicle. However, if you normally park with the driver’s side next to the pavement, this seat would be better than the opposite side.

If you use this seat, make sure the child seat can be fitted in this position correctly.

    When Installing Your Rear

    • Move the front seats up as far as possible so that you have lots of room to work in the back seat.
    • If possible, recline the vehicle seat where the car seat will go before starting your installation. Make the seat upright once youve finished. This will help you get the seat installed tightly.
    • Pull the seat belt or latch belt from inside the car seat, not from outside the seat. This means that if you dropped the latch belt, it should fall down on top of where the child goes, not outside the car seat. This rule applies to most car seats except for the following:
    • Britax Classic convertible models, older Britax convertibles
    • Chicco KeyFit and KeyFit30
    • Sunshine Kids Radian models

Proper Car Seat Angle: 30 45 Degrees

    Infant car seat installation

In addition to the seat or base being properly secured, you must also have it installed at the proper angle .

Most seat bases come with a built-in level or color-coded gauge that shows you when the seat is at the proper angle some of the economy car seats just have a leveling line. You can adjust the height of the foot of the base to get it just right. A great video on this can be found here .

    Which Coats Are Too Thick

Duchossois usually tells parents to watch out for down coats and other jackets with lots of filler.

“That would be a good indication that that coat is just going to be too thick to use within the harness system,” she said. “Just make sure that it’s on the thin side or a thinner coat when putting the child in the car seat with the harness.”

The less the child moves in their car seat during a crash, the more the car seat will work like it’s supposed to. That decreases the chance for injuries, said Cass Herring, Director of Child Occupant Protection for Safe Kids Worldwide, a certifying body for child passenger safety technicians.

And if taking coats on and off between car rides is too much, parents could consider layering, she said.

“Let’s think about an infant,” she told USA TODAY. “If you have a onesie and then maybe you have a fleece underneath that’s not too thick, then that’s going to be perfect. As soon as you get in the vehicle and warm the vehicle up, you don’t want them to have too many layers.”

    Can You Put A Forward

How to Properly Install an Infant Car Seat : 8 Steps (with Pictures ...

If its the only car seat that needs to be installed, yes, you can put a forward-facing car seat in the middle of the backseat. As I mentioned before, placing your car seat on the center seat of the backseat will ALWAYS be the safest place to install your car seat.

Now, while you can place a forward-facing car seat in the middle, if you have other children riding in the backseat that dont require the use of a car seat, then doing that may not be the best choice.

The reason being is because most car seats are designed with side impact protection that works well when the car seat is used in the forward-facing position. Your child that doesnt need a car seat has no protection at all, so it would be safer to seat them in the middle and place your forward-facing car seat on the outer seats of the backseat.

How Easy Is It To Install

When choosing the right car seat, you want one that can be fitted easily, safely and quickly. As rotating car seats are attached to a special swivel base to allow for movement, these need to be installed using ISOFIX rather than your cars seat belt something our parent tester, Catrina found straightforward with the Joie Spin 360 GTI. She tested the car seat with her 5-month-old daughter and said, Installing the Joie car seat using the ISOFIX was very easy and it didnt take long at all. For ease, I pushed the front seat all the way forward to give us plenty of space, then installed it and it only took me about 1 minute to fit it properly. I love that the indicators turn green, so you know the car seat is in place correctly.

Which Type Of Dog Seat Belt Is Best

There are several dog car seat belt types. The most common are the harnesses, but there are also other types, such as the safety belt extenders or the car safety harness. Here is a detailed look.

    • Dog Seat Belt Harness. A seat belt is an excellent option for small to medium-sized dogs who like to jump. It makes attaching your pup to a car seatbelt much easier. They are similar to human safety belts but feature an adjustable strap system to perfectly fit your dogs collar. They can also be used as a walking harness during a stroll.
    • Seat Belt Extenders. If you have an older model car with a short middle seat belt, you may need a seat belt extender to help fit your dog into the back seat. These extenders can be secured to the existing seatbelt, so your pup doesnt have to share with other passengers.
    • Car Safety Harnesses. If you dont want your large breed dog bouncing around in the backseat while driving, consider investing in a dog car harness. This will help keep them safely secured while traveling at high speeds. This way, if you have an accident, it will not be able to fly out of its seat and hit the airbag. They are often subjected to crash tests by the center for pet safety for credibility.

    Check The Owner’s Manual

Always check out the vehicle owners manual for further information on how to use the LATCH system in any seating position. There should be a specific section about LATCH, usually under the subheading “Car Seats” or “Child Safety Seats.” If you can’t find those sections in your manual, try reading through the seat belts and occupant protection sections.

You’ll usually find a handy diagram showing the appropriate locations for a LATCH installation. The manual may also specifically discuss using the outboard LATCH positions for a center car seat installation.

Do NOT install a car seat in the center seat using the lower anchors of the LATCH system unless your vehicle manual specifically states that a car seat can be installed in the center using the lower anchors.

What Is The Safest Place For A Newborn Car Seat

How to install a rear facing car seat

The safest place for a newborn car seat is the center back seat. In the middle seat, the newborn is away from airbags and protected from side crashes. We recommend reading the manufacturer’s instructions before installing the infant seat in the center rear seat. As many newborn seats include a car seat base, some vehicles do not have middle lower anchors for latch installation. The newborn should never be in the front seat, next to the driver!

What Type Of Car Seat Should I Use

    Rear-facing car seat:

    • All infants must use a rear-facing car seat. A rear-facing seat provides the best protection for your childs head, neck, and spine in a sudden stop or crash. Once your baby outgrows the infant seat, use a larger, rear-facing seat. As long as your child still fits within the manufacturers weight and height limits, they are safest using a rear-facing seat until 2, 3, or even 4 years old.

    Forward-facing car seat:

    • Once your child has outgrown the larger rear-facing car seat and is at least2 years old they can move to a forward-facing car seat with a 5-point harness. Keep your child in a 5-point harness until they weigh at least 18 kg and can sit straight and tall without moving out of position or unbuckling. This may be at 4, 5, or even 6 years old. If your child outgrows the seat before they can sit correctly, you may need a 5-point harness that will hold a taller, heavier child.

    Booster seat:

    • When your child is at least 18 kg and at least 4 years old, and has outgrown their forward-facing car seat with a 5-point harness, they may be ready to move to a belt-positioning booster seat. To safely use a booster seat, your child must be able to sit correctly. Keep your child in a booster seat until they safely fit the adult seat belt. For most children, this will be between 9 and 12 years old.

    Seat belt:

If your child cannot sit like this for the whole trip without slouching, continue to use a booster seat.
