There are so many benefits to using a 360-degree car seat. Being able to turn the seat to face you makes it infinitely easier to get a wriggly baby, mid-tantrum toddler or reluctant child safely strapped in, without breaking your back bending over in an awkward position. Moving a power seat on your own is possible, but it will necessitate the removal of some parts of the seat. Can You Put A Forward
If its the only car seat that needs to be installed, yes, you can put a forward-facing car seat in the middle of the backseat. As I mentioned before, placing your car seat on the center seat of the backseat will ALWAYS be the safest place to install your car seat.
Now, while you can place a forward-facing car seat in the middle, if you have other children riding in the backseat that dont require the use of a car seat, then doing that may not be the best choice.
The reason being is because most car seats are designed with side impact protection that works well when the car seat is used in the forward-facing position. Your child that doesnt need a car seat has no protection at all, so it would be safer to seat them in the middle and place your forward-facing car seat on the outer seats of the backseat.

Check The Owner’s Manual
Always check out the vehicle owners manual for further information on how to use the LATCH system in any seating position. There should be a specific section about LATCH, usually under the subheading “Car Seats” or “Child Safety Seats.” If you can’t find those sections in your manual, try reading through the seat belts and occupant protection sections.
You’ll usually find a handy diagram showing the appropriate locations for a LATCH installation. The manual may also specifically discuss using the outboard LATCH positions for a center car seat installation.
Do NOT install a car seat in the center seat using the lower anchors of the LATCH system unless your vehicle manual specifically states that a car seat can be installed in the center using the lower anchors.
What Is The Safest Place For A Newborn Car Seat
The safest place for a newborn car seat is the center back seat. In the middle seat, the newborn is away from airbags and protected from side crashes. We recommend reading the manufacturer’s instructions before installing the infant seat in the center rear seat. As many newborn seats include a car seat base, some vehicles do not have middle lower anchors for latch installation. The newborn should never be in the front seat, next to the driver!

What Type Of Car Seat Should I Use
Rear-facing car seat:
- All infants must use a rear-facing car seat. A rear-facing seat provides the best protection for your childs head, neck, and spine in a sudden stop or crash. Once your baby outgrows the infant seat, use a larger, rear-facing seat. As long as your child still fits within the manufacturers weight and height limits, they are safest using a rear-facing seat until 2, 3, or even 4 years old.
Forward-facing car seat:
- Once your child has outgrown the larger rear-facing car seat and is at least2 years old they can move to a forward-facing car seat with a 5-point harness. Keep your child in a 5-point harness until they weigh at least 18 kg and can sit straight and tall without moving out of position or unbuckling. This may be at 4, 5, or even 6 years old. If your child outgrows the seat before they can sit correctly, you may need a 5-point harness that will hold a taller, heavier child.
Booster seat:
- When your child is at least 18 kg and at least 4 years old, and has outgrown their forward-facing car seat with a 5-point harness, they may be ready to move to a belt-positioning booster seat. To safely use a booster seat, your child must be able to sit correctly. Keep your child in a booster seat until they safely fit the adult seat belt. For most children, this will be between 9 and 12 years old.

If your child cannot sit like this for the whole trip without slouching, continue to use a booster seat.
