    Prevention Your Best Bet

When it comes to hard water stains, the best thing you can do for your car is to prevent them from occurring in the first place. Consider one or more of these preventative measures for your car:

    • Park in a garage or carport whenever possible to avoid rainwater from drying on the surface of your vehicle.
    • Treat any water spots that do develop quickly before they have time to set.
    • Remove residual water from your glass or paint surfaces.
    • Make sure your paint is in excellent condition. Over time, tiny micro-scratches can dull the surface of your paint and hold onto water and dirt. If your paint is entirely smooth, on the other hand, it will repel water more effectively. Consider professional detailing service to restore the lustre to your car.
    • Apply a coat of wax to your paint and treat the windshield with glass water repellant.
    • Treat your windshield on a regular basis with water repellant products such as Rain-X Complete Surface Protectant and Armor All ® Extreme Shine Wax at a full-service car wash. If you are a member of a car wash membership, you can make sure your car is treated as often as necessary to prevent water spots.

Hard water spots on your glass can be removed. It is much easier to avoid them in the first place. It just takes a bit of effort or a frequent car wash add-on service to keep them from developing on your car.

Water Spots On Cars After Washing

Hard water spots often develop after washing your car or truck. The reason is not following proper washing techniques.

You should never wash your vehicle in direct sunlight. This will cause any water on your finish to evaporate quickly and not give you enough time to dry the finish properly.

You should never let your car or truck air dry. Its important to dry your vehicle yourself to prevent water stains or mineral deposits from occurring. Drying by hand will remove the water along with the potentially damaging minerals and contaminants with it.

Be sure to dry your car completely to eliminate the chance of water from cracks and crevices running off later as you begin to drive and leaving water stains that might go unnoticed until its too late to prevent serious damage.

    Vinegar And Distilled Water Method

This method is most effective for freshwater spots as the solution is acidic where as the spots are basic. You will need:

    • White distilled vinegar

    Step 1:

Mix equal parts white distilled vinegar and distilled water to make the vinegar solution youll use to remove the spots. Once thoroughly mixed use a funnel to place this mixture into your spray bottle

    Step 2:

Spray the vinegar mixture on the water spots of the vehicle being sure to saturate the spots. Leave the mixture to set for about 3 minutes. Repeat this step as needed until all water stains are dissolved.

    Step 3:

Soak the towel you are using in the vinegar, you may want to use a bucket to do this, or simply lay the towel across the windshield and spray down with the vinegar solution. You should aim to have the soaked towel across the windshield for 2-3 minutes.

    Step 4:

Next youre going to put in some elbow grease and gently scrub away the water stains. Be careful not to put a ton of pressure onto the towel, aggressively removing the stains can scratch your paint or the glass windshield as the chemical build up can be sharp on a micro level. The towel should be enough to scrub away the water stains, but if you would like to use another tool a soft sided sponge should also get the job done.

    Step 5:

Depending on what tools you have available, youre going to dry the window. A squeegee and a dry towel work best, but paper towels will also work in a pinch. Wipe the windshield thoroughly.

    • Use a microfiber towel to dry the surface when youre done.

Your Final Bet: Compounding And Polishing

If youve used wheel acid, there shouldnt be any more mineral deposits remaining. Its so strong, youre pretty much guaranteed to see results.

However, if your cars been sitting under acid rain, you could discover small etchings in the surface of the clear coat. Similarly, if hard deposits have baked too hard, after removal, they could leave micro-cavities behind.

These dimples will concentrate water and contaminants every time the car gets wet, worsening the problem over time.

The only way to remedy the chemical etching once it has damaged the surface is to polish or wet-cut the clear coat to flatten it out.

If the layer is too thin, youre looking at an expensive sanding down of the panel and respraying of the clear coat at a professional paint shop.
