How to Repair a DEEP SCRATCH in Car Paint (DIY)

As odd as it may sound, the most common cause behind car scratches is improper washing and drying.

The cars paint is more susceptible to marks than youd otherwise think, and this is why the sponge you use may leave scratches on the cars paint.

When you wash your car, its just as important as what you use to wash it with, and how you wash it. Its always best to use a microfiber towel specially designed to carry out tasks like this with utmost finesse and minimum risk to your cars paint. Once you choose the ideal cloth, you also need to decide on the cleaning product youll use. In this case, its best that you use a professional detailing car soap.

If you dont want to resort to car scratch repair, you need to know what can cause these scratches on your vehicle.

Drying Your Car: Dos And Donts

This is why drying your car needs consideration, proper technique, and materials chosen to do the job. If you dont dry your car properly, your cars surface is bound to show some micro-scratches sooner or later.

Keep in mind that letting your car dry all by itself is probably the least recommended of all solutions. This is the surefire way for your car to get those unpleasant water spots that can become permanent if not treated.

Car scratch repair only becomes necessary if youre using all the wrong materials in washing and drying your car.

Another wrong way to dry your car implies using a squeegee, which is similarly harsh on your cars factory paint coat.

How To Remove A Deep Scratch On The Car Step By Step Instructions

I want to tell you in detail how you can remove a deep scratch on your car in garage conditions, without painting the whole element. The method is available for the simple car enthusiast and does not require much knowledge and skills.

For example, scratches on the varnish are removed by deep polishing, but if the base or even the primer is damaged, things are different, so I will show you on the example of two scratches on the car door.

For convenience, I took the door off, degreased the scratches,

Then with 2000 of sandpaper and degreaser we need to smooth out a little bit the sharp corners of the scratch, you cannot use water at this stage, as the scratch can be up to the metal and water will cause oxidation.

Once the corners are smoothed out a bit we need paint

I already had paint in my color.

Then we need to take a medical syringe, the tip of the syringe cut or filed at an angle of 45 degrees.

You dont need a lot of paint for these scratches, it takes about 1 milliliter.

Then carefully fill the scratch with paint so as not to leave any gaps, one layer is usually not enough primer will shine through, so we apply two layers with an interval of 10 minutes.

After it has dried, you need to remove the excess paint, that is, flatten it with the surface. Youll need 2,000 grit sandpaper

and a small, hard block

I made mine out of a foam grater, which is sold in a construction store.

Check for gaps and leave to dry.

Then we wrap the tape, as in the picture,

Use A Scratch Repair Kit

If your cars scratches arent too deep, you might be able to use a standard scratch repair kit to fix it. These are convenient solutions that can be purchased from most auto supply stores.

Scratch repair kits have all the things you need to remove shallow to moderately deep scratches, including scratch removal polish and paste, touch-up paint, and buffers. However, these kits are not the best for fixing intense scratches, so assess the severity of the scratch before purchasing a repair kit.

Use The Buffing Cloth To Remove The Scratches

Next, take the buffing pad or microfiber cloth and rub the scratch removal paste onto and over the scratches.

The scratch removal polish will work by removing a thin layer of your cars clear coat so that the surface of the scratch becomes smooth and even. Others may work by smoothing over the edges of scratches. Regardless, either method should have no adverse effects on your paint.

Take your time and scrub into the scratches. It may take several minutes to begin seeing positive results.

3 Easy Ways to Remove Scratches from a Car

In order to know how to fix the scratch, you need to figure out how deep it is. An easy way to check this is with the fingernail trick. Lightly go over the scratch with your nail and see if your nail catches on the scratch. If it doesnt, it means the scratch is superficial and an easy fix. But if your nail catches, removing the scratch will be a bit of a challenge.

How To Fix Deep Scratches

Some scratches on your carâs paint job are just too deep to buff out. In that scenario, youâll need to paint over them.

First, youâll need to thoroughly wash your vehicle, paying particular attention to cleaning out the scratch of any small particles.

Then itâs time to sand the area around the scratch with 2000-grit sandpaper. Using a sanding pad, work for 10-15 seconds at a time, being sure to go in the same direction as the scratch.

For especially deep scratches, you may want to initially try heavier sandpaper, like 1500-grit. After smoothing out the area with the 1500-grit, you can then use the finer 2000-grit.

As you sand, periodically rinse the area to check your progress.

Now itâs time to wash and clean the scratch and apply touch-up paint.

Once the paint is dry, itâs time to tape off the sanded area to avoid overspray.

Next, apply three coats of sandable primer, waiting five to 10 minutes between each. A primer close in color to your carâs paint ensures a better result.

Now itâs time to apply paint in the identical shade as the factory finish. Checking with your manufacturer for the exact paint code can help make your vehicle look like new.

Spray a few coats of paint onto the same area as the primer, waiting five to ten minutes in between. After the last coat dries, apply a high-quality carnauba car wax to keep the carâs surface protected and sealed off from the elements.

Scuffs are a collection of very light surface scratches that have only damaged the clear coat of the paint job. To find out if the scuffs have only damaged your clear coat, rub with spit and see if the scuffs vanish.

The fix: You can get rid of these yourself with some rubbing compound from an auto parts store. Or have an auto body shop do it for you .

Cover It With Duct Tape

Car Paint Scratch Repair: Step

If the deep scratch runs the entire length of your car, this trick might not be the best solution since youre talking about covering it up with an adhesive tape. The idea is to cover up the scratch with a duct tape that has exactly the same color as your cars body paint.

Todays duct tapes already come in various colors so it should be fairly easy to choose one that will fit the color of your car. Just make sure to apply the duct tape as evenly as possible without creating any crease lines or other potentially-distracting lines. At least this will buy you some time before you can gather all of your resources for a really nice paint job on your car.

Use The Right Repair Technique

First, you need to determine if the paint scratch is fine or deep.

The way to do this is to simply feel it with your fingernail!

Basically, a scratch can be repaired with the process on this page if:

  • You cannot actually feel it or
  • If you can feel it, but your fingernail does not catch on the scratch.
  • If you can indeed feel the scratch and it catches your fingernail, or you see the primer color or bare metal, you should head over to our How-To Repair Paint Chips & Deep Scratches page.

But let me be crystal clear:

The damage is still considered minor if you can feel the paint scratch in the clearcoat, but fingernails do not catch.

Rest assured, this type of thing can be fully restored and the method is pretty easy!

It just takes a piece of 3000 grit wet and dry sand paper. Polish away those grit sanding scratches with an auto paint polish.

Use A Fine Brush To Touch Up Paint

If you choose to apply the touch-up paint yourself, make sure you use a fine-bristle paint brush to apply your paint. If one was not supplied in your touch-up kit, you can find inexpensive micro brushes at most auto parts retailers.

Using your fine-bristle brush, apply the touch-up paint gently and carefully to cover the desired area. When finished, allow it to dry for between 8 and 12 hours. Once dry, you can apply a wax layer to help seal and protect the newly applied paint.

How To Fix Deep Scratches On A Car

Safe driving isnt perfect, and even the most careful drivers sometimes get their cars scratched for various reasons. It can be both frustrating and annoying to see your vehicle showcasing a big, ugly scratch because of someone else’s clumsy driving, especially if it just got a new paint job or a wax finish.

Fortunately, you dont have to resign yourself to high repair fees to fix a few deep scratches. With this guide, you can learn how to fix deep scratches on your car.

Bear in mind, while these practices are effective, large or very deep scratches may require professional service for a complete repair. However, these tips should repair most scratches. Lets cover a few different methods for fixing deep scratches in your car.

How Do I Use A Scratch Remover

If the scratch is deeper than the clear coat and has gone onto the base coat, you might prefer to leave the toothpaste in the bathroom and use a dedicated scratch removal product, instead.

If you want to try using a scratch removal product, follow these steps:

  • First, wash and dry the affected area to ensure you dont end up rubbing any debris or dirt into the scratch and making it worse. Use warm soapy water and then rinse down before drying with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Before applying any scratch removal agent, you should also read the manufacturers guidelines and check if any buffing tool or pad is sold with the agent to use on your paintwork.
  • Usually, you would apply around a 2ps worth of product to the buffing pad and ensure that the product is evenly distributed around the pad to ensure even application.
  • Next, rub the product into the affected area using a circular motion, making sure you dont change direction, to ensure an even covering.
  • Once youve finished, its important you dont allow any excess product to dry on the car in case it affects the paintwork, so clean any product away with a clean microfibre cloth.
  • Before repeating the process, read the manufacturers instructions to ensure you dont over-apply and end up unwittingly damaging your paintwork.
