How To Restore A Leather Car Interior

This photo shows a worn leather car seat. We will restore the color to the two front seats.
- Leather Colorant Kit – Used to restore the leather.
- Flexifil– To fill cracks
- Leather Binder – To strengthen the leather
Step 4 Sponge On The First Coat Of Leather Colorant
When you are satisfied all cracking is filled and the Flexifill has had ample time to completely dry, shake the bottle of Leather Colorant for about 3 minutes to make sure it is well mixed. Pour a small amount onto a sponge and rub into the leather. The idea is to sponge on a thin coat of color working it into any gaps, creases and hard to reach areas.
Also notice the on the photo above, after applying the colorant by sponge, we have applied another coat of filler. Sometimes your repair looks perfect until you put the color on, and then it shows the cracks very lightly. So, if this happens, just re-fill and apply the color again. There is no need to take the color off both products work perfectly with each other.

Repairing Cracks In Leather Seats
Youll need to find a leather repair kit with a dye that matches your upholstery. You can then wash the area thoroughly with the warm soapy water and rinse clean. Then grab a clean rag and you can use it to apply denatured alcohol. The final step is to dry the area using a clean microfiber cloth.
Once its dried, sand the cracked leather area lightly to create a bonding surface for the liquid leather to adhere. Now, you can apply the liquid leather into the crack and let it dry. Use a wet sponge to wipe the liquid leather off any undamaged leather surfaces.
After the first layer dries, continue applying layers in the same order until they match the height of your seat leather. You can always sand it down if its raised too high and smooth it out with a fresh coat.
The final step will be to add a thin layer of diluted liquid leather over the entire seat to blend the repair in. You can do this by diluting it by 30 percent with water. Once the repairs fully dried, you can use a leather conditioner to make all the leather suppler and more elastic and malleable when you put stress on the repair areas.
What Causes Leather To Crack
Leather is a natural product it was once living skin. Complex microfibers that comprise leather were kept replenished by the skins natural oils. These oils kept the microfibers durable and flexible. But, leather products do not contain natural oils and so the microfibers slowly dry out. Eventually, dried microfibers will break, resulting in a visible crack in the leather.
Exposure to the suns UV rays can expedite the leathers drying process. Keeping your cars leather upholstery covered from direct sunlight will improve the longevity of your leather.
If you are now wondering can you put seat covers on leather seats, the answer is yes. Seat covers protect your leather upholstery from sun damage, scratches, spills, and dirt.

How To Fix A Ripped Leather Car Seat
- Staff Writer
Leather is a very durable material that looks great and holds up well on car seats. No matter how good it is though it can get cut or ripped leaving you with a challenging problem to solve.
Car seats get a lot of abuse and any fix to a tear is going to need to be able to withstand some serious abuse. If you have plenty of cash to throw at the problem you can have an upholsterer replace the seat covers or maybe even replace a single piece of leather. It obviously wont be cheap though.
There are a few good alternatives that are worth checking out before you either spend a large amount of cash or decide to ignore the problem.
We should point out that the alternatives to replacing your entire seat cover or replacing a section of leather are generally not going to look flawless. Theyre going to more often than not just look passable. Thats the honest truth.
If you want flawless youre going to need to shell out the big bills to make that happen. These fixes are going to primarily be to help prevent the situation from getting worse while also improving the visual appearance of the rip or tear.
Lets cover the best alternatives.
Step 3 Apply Binder & Fill Remaining Cracks With Flexifil
Once the leather is dry, it is important, particularly for old or worn leather, to strengthen it with Leather Binder. To do this, simply take a sponge and pour on a small amount of Leather Binder, then use this to work it into the surface of the leather. After applying a full coat, leave to dry. Any build up of binder in crevaces or stitching areas should be wiped away before it can dry. Once dry, apply another coat of Binder in the same manner and repeat this process for approximately 8-10 coats.
To smooth over any areas of cracking, the Flexifil is applied using a palette knife and wiped on in a thin layer so that it only goes into the cracks. The filler is then left to dry for about 5-10 minutes, The filler can then be sanded down with very fine sandpaper to make it smooth. This process can be repeated until all cracking is level with the surface of the leather.

How To Fix Large Rips Or Holes In Leather Car Seats
For large rips or holes caused by people, pets, and children, you may use a patch instead. A patch will cover any hole and will also prevent holes and rips from getting bigger.
- Clean the affected area thoroughly. The best way to repair a leather car seat with a large rip or hole is to use a leather patch. But before applying a patch, make sure that the area is clean and free from any dirt or grime. Clean it just like the previous steps.
- Use leather patches. To apply a leather patch, cut a larger patch, about three times bigger than the hole. Insert the patch under the leather seat hole. Arrange the patch so that it covers the area. Use a strong glue or adhesive to keep the patch from moving.
- Sand the area. Use fine-grit sandpaper for sanding the area. Use a microfiber cloth to remove any dirt.
- Apply a leather dye. Apply the leather dye. And make sure to park the car with the door and window open to allow the treated area to dry out.

Rips That Border A Seam
In situations where the rip borders right up against a seam, it usually isnt possible to slip a fabric patch under the seam. In this case, the solution is to patch over the top using a remnant of the same leather or vinyl used on the seats.
All seats have some excess material that is hidden from view beyond where it attaches to the seat frame. To access this requires removing a seat or some part of it.

All About Leather Car Seats
Gone are the days where leather car seats are exclusively reserved for super expensive cars. Now, its possible to find a car thats both affordable and offers features that are typically considered luxurious including one with leather car seats.
Leather car seats are popular for several reasons. Not only do they add a bit of polish to the interior of the car, but leather seats are also comfortable and can hold up better than fabric seats.
That being said, your car gets a lot of use and consequentially, seats get a bit of wear and tear. Thats completely normal and even expected. With that said, having cracked leather seats can be uncomfortable and cheapen the appearance of your car. Fixing them doesnt have to be extremely laborious nor costly.
There are some disadvantages to choosing leather seats over fabric seats. For one, leather can crack, scratches more easily, heats up in the summer, and stays cold in the winter. Still, few things are quite as polished in appearance as a car with fresh, clean leather seats.
Leather seats offer other advantages over fabric, however. Besides adding an air of luxury to the vehicle, leather seats also dont hold odor the same way a fabric seat does. Also, its easier to clean a leather seat than a fabric one, so theres no need to worry if you spill your latte all over the seat and make a mess. Itll be substantially easier to clean with leather than fabric, after all.
Gluing And Clamping Technique
If exposed open-cell foam may come in contact with glue from the patch, I insert a thin non-porous sheetplastic, wax paper, etc.between the foam and surface material.
If glue is permitted to saturate the foam and harden, it will ruin the sponginess and stiffen it.
Ensure that your pressure platethe surface that will directly contact the patch and any glue that squeezes out around itis less porous than the seat surface.
Otherwise, when you release the pressure, bits of the seat fabric may separate and adhere to the clamp. When I use a wood block, I wrap it with plastic cling wrap from the kitchen in order to release from the glue.
Metal clamps dont need this precaution. Since I use a water-soluble glue, I can clean up any residue with a moist rag.
Positioning a patch that has to edge snugly up against a seam can be difficult because it will tend to slide around once glue is applied and because the pressure plate generally obscures vision. I practice aligning it a few times before applying the glue.
