Reporting an abandoned motor vehicle online is designed to make filing a police report easier and more convenient for you; however, not all abandoned motor vehicles can be reported online.

Once a call for service is received, a Police Service Technician goes to the scene and investigates the complaint. One of several outcomes will occur:
- The vehicle may be towed away on first check, using several California Vehicle Code Sections such as Expired Registration over Six Months, Five or More Unpaid Parking Tickets, or Missing Vehicle Parts Needed to Operate.
- The vehicle may have a Courtesy Warning Sticker applied to the windshield giving notice that the vehicle tire mark must be broken within the next 72 hours…the Police Service Technician records the vehicles odometer reading and marks a tire for recheck after the 72 hours have passed. If the vehicle tire mark remains unbroken after 72 hours have passed, the vehicle will be towed. The Police Service Technician may determine that the vehicle is not abandoned and clearly is driven on a regular basis. If this is the case, no further action will be taken.

Yes. Cars can still be considered abandoned if theyre left in a garden, field or any other private land. Its best to report the vehicle to your local authority as usual, rather than approach the landowner.

Any motorized vehicle left on private property for an extended period may legally classify as abandoned. Details will vary by location, municipality, state, and the codes and statutes of your area but any motorized vehicle left on your property for 48 to 72 hours or more is usually considered abandoned. With the consent of the private property owner a car may stay as long as the owner consents, however, without oral or written consent, it becomes up to the owner of the space to remove it.

Once reported, a council starts their follow-up process, again, with the help of the DVLA. A notice is placed on the vehicles windscreen to advise it will be removed.
Theres usually a seven-day warning.;;
