If you use a debit card to pick up your rental car, Avis will generally request an authorization hold against your account for the estimated charges of the rental. This hold is placed soon after your card is presented. Avis reserves the right at its sole discretion to request extra value based on certain factors as deemed appropriate.

When the car rental is over, the held funds will be reversed and released, but keep in mind that banks may take time to post them back to the account.
If you fail to return the vehicle as agreed, Avis will obtain additional authorizations from your account to cover the rental charges. These charges may include cleaning fees and fees for extending the rental period.

While you can use a debit card to rent a car, there are some significant trade-offs. For starters, youll often be liable for a security deposit that may take a few weeks to be refunded. You will also undergo a in some instances and be required to provide at least two forms of ID.
Most importantly, youll forego primary rental coverage, which is something you normally have to pay for but you get as a benefit with a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card. If you decide not to and end up in an accident, youll have to process the claim through your own insurance and risk a higher premium. This trade-off is not worthwhile. You probably wont be able to rent a luxury vehicle using a debit card, and it is unlikely that you will be allowed to drive the rental car out of state.

At airport locations, debit card deposits are only accepted at the time of rental if accompanied by a ticketed return travel itinerary. The name and address shown on the renters drivers license must match their current home address. Active duty military personnel are exempt from address requirements. Other than the renters spouse or domestic partner, no other additional drivers are allowed. At the time of rental, charges will be placed on the debit card which reduces the available funds in the account associated with the card used. Renter is responsible for any overdraft fees incurred. Disembarking passengers will be asked to provide a credit card or debit card with funds to cover the cost of the rental. Renters without a ticketed return travel itinerary will need to provide a credit card with sufficient funds to cover the cost of the rental plus an additional amount between $200 to $400 based on rental location.
