Japanese Vs American Cars: Which Is Better

Everyone has their own perception about which country manufactures the best vehicles. One most popular belief is that Japanese cars are better than American cars.

But heres where the irony comes in: The Japanese automotive industry rose to exceptional heights because of one American engineer, statistician and professor named William Edward Demings. His precise methods helped Japanese companies create a new quality control standard that not only helped their economy to recover, but also made their vehicles very competitive in the global market.

So if the Americans need to blame someone for having such a tough competitor, then it should be one of their own: Dennings.

But seriously, Japans automotive industry has gone a long way from the time when Komanosuke Uchiyama made Takuri, the first Japanese-made gasoline engine car in 1907.

Now the question is: are Japanese vehicles really better than American cars these days? Letâs make a side-by-side comparison:

In this week’s ABCs of Car Tech, I’ll do my best to answer those questions and explain the ins and outs of Bluetooth wireless technology.

What is Bluetooth? When most people hear the word “Bluetooth,” they immediately think about speakerphones and wireless headsets for hands-free calling. That’s partially correct in that these devices often use Bluetooth technology to connect with your phone, but hands-free calling is only part of the whole picture.

What are these profiles and why should I care? For purposes of this article, I’ll be sticking to the profiles and features that apply to cars.

How To Install Bluetooth In Any Car

Whether it has a tape deck, aux input, CD changer, or none of that, there’s a way to make wireless music work.

When it comes to used cars, I’m pretty open-minded. In the past four years, I’ve owned a Lincoln Town Car, Toyota 4Runner, Mazda 3, Mazda Miata, Acura CL Type-S, Lexus LS400, Honda S2000, and Porsche Boxster. I’m currently considering Toyota Centuries, BMW M3s, and Chevy Corvettes. No make or model is a dealbreaker. The only thing any car absolutely has to have is a way to play music directly from my phone.

Considering my 2006 Lincoln is the newest car I’ve ever owned, I’ve never had a car with Bluetooth or even an aux port from the factory. But in almost every used car, there’s a way to make Bluetooth connectivity work. It just depends on what era your car comes from, how much you care about audio quality, and what your budget is. Regardless, these are the best ways to do it, listed in order of my own personal preference.

Install a Bluetooth Receiver Into Your Stock Radio’s Hidden Aux Port

This is the easiest way to get consistent, reliable, hassle-free Bluetooth with very little investment. Especially if you own a car that’s too new for a tape deck but too old for a factory 3.5-mm auxiliary input, this might be your key.

    Smartphone As Key Fob

A recent expansion of Bluetooth® technology in your smartphone is the capability to use it as a key fob to access your car recognizing you as the owner when you approach and unlocking the doors. An increasingly popular trend, annual shipments of Bluetooth enabled key fobs and accessories are forecasted to increase 60% over the next five years. According to the 2020 Bluetooth Market Update, analysts expect to see more than 13 million annual shipments of Bluetooth enabled key fobs and accessories by 2024.

This technology also goes beyond simple access control, supporting a wide range of flexibility and customization in how its applied. For example, you could program your smartphone to only open/unlock certain doors that you use regularly without unlocking others. This can be helpful if youre habitually walking out to your car with your hands full. Utility vehicles, like those on construction projects, are a great example of where this technology will be used, said Chuck Sabin, senior director of market development and business strategy for the Bluetooth Special Interest Group . Think about someone needing to repeatedly go back and forth to collect tools and supplies. As they near the vehicle, they can gain access, and as they walk away, it locks. You dont have to think about it.
