The Best New Cars Of 2021

In a year of seismic change, the auto industry is hitting the road with some astounding new arrivals

It may have seemed as if the world stopped in 2020, but quite a few stellar car models were still launched, albeit somewhat stealthily. This year, we can also look forward to a raft of new additions that will be hitting the road at some point in 2021. Here are a few we have our eye on

Making newsworthy pronouncements about how quickly you are embracing new trends and technology is all the rage in the car business right now.

This March, Volvo declared it would not just be an EV-only brand by 2030 but that its also going leather-free, and that customers will only be able to buy new cars online instead of showrooms. To mark the news, it also announced this C40 Re:Charge as its first purpose-built electric car.

A clear relation of the crazily popular XC40 SUV, the C40 carries a more coupé-esque profile and some subtle Look Im electric styling.

Its not a million miles away from the feel of a Polestar 2 in fact the electric performance brand owned by, you guessed it, Volvo.

And promising a 0-62mph time of 4.9 seconds, its officially only 0.2 seconds slower.

Also like Polestar, Volvo is promising to simplify customer choices and reduce model variations on its electric models. Itll be interesting to see just how competitive the EV scene will be by the time the C40 hits the road at the end of the year.

Aston Martin Dbs Superleggera

Cool Factor: James Bond’s Car

Starting Price: $304,995

Technically the next James Bond film will have four Aston Martins on screen: A DBS Superleggera, a classic DB5, a V8 Vantage, and a Valhalla. And the baddies will probably drive Land Rover Defenders. But the 715-horsepower DBS Superleggera will be the star of the show, with Daniel Craig aka James Bond himself behind the wheel of it for the majority of the film. There’s even a 007 Edition DBS to celebrate the on-screen achievement.

We’ve driven the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, and there’s a reason this supercar is Bond’s ride of choice. The V12-powered British coupe is supremely quick, able to hit 60 miles per hour in just 3.4 seconds and top out at a mind-bending 211 miles per hour. It also makes our list of best-looking cars of 2020, for reasons that are obvious to anyone who has eyes.

Having A Family Doesn’t Mean You Can’t Have A Nice Car

Having a family isnt all about childrens birthday parties and tolerating cartoons. It also doesnt necessarily mean you have to swap your sports car for a bulky, bland people carrier. While those cars are practical, worthy and sensible, theyre rarely cool or fun. There are, however, plenty of family-size cars that youll be happy to park on your driveway.

Weve mainly focused on hatchbacks, estates and SUVs, which give you plenty of space for buggies, toys and all the other clutter that accompanies family life. While you could have a lithe coupe with a child seat in the back, itll be hard to have one as your main family car. All our picks have four doors or more, making it easier to get child seats – and their occupants – in and out. Almost all come with the newer ISOFIX seat-mounting points.

Just because theyre cool, doesnt mean theyre let off easily. A family car needs to be durable, capable of handling a barrage of crumbs and the odd jam or drink spill.

Weve listed a few below, in ascending price brackets.

Editor’s Choice: Mini Cooper

People have long rooted for the underdog, whether it was David felling Goliath with a well-placed stone or Rocky Balboa rising from the shadows to challenge the established champion. When it comes to motorsports, one underdog stands out: the Mini Cooper.

While the Minis impact on motorsports is legendary, that wasnt quite the original intent. Sir Alec Issigoniss main goal for the car was much more practical: He wanted minimize the disruptive effects of the 1956 Suez Crisis on his fellow British citizens. His new car had to be efficient at every step.

The front-wheel-drive layout wasnt the only measure taken to maximize passenger and luggage space. Issigonis also replaced the suspensions traditional coil springs with rubber cones sourced from Moulton Developments Limited.

These rubber cones helped give the Mini another advantage: excellent handing. BMC management wished to see the car raced, but their works teams initially didnt see any promise.

Formula car builder John Cooper helped change that notion when he replaced the Minis original 850cc engine with a 948cc variant already found elsewhere in the BMC model line. Suddenly the Mini had enough moxie to be competitive, and Cooper convinced BMC management to put a homologation model into productionwith a royalty attached, of course.

Volvo V60 Cross Country

The Volvo V60 is already one of our favourite mid-size estate cars, and the Cross Country version adds off-road ability and extra ground clearance to make it even cooler. Like the regular V60, the Cross Country has an interior that shares many parts with the larger and more expensive Volvo XC90, with most features controlled by the portrait touchscreen system. The taller ride height means its even more comfortable over bumps than the standard car, and the one diesel engine is still reasonably economical.

Chrysler Ghia Streamline X

Top 10 Coolest European Concept Cars We

Built at the request of Chrysler executive Virgil Exner, the Gilda was an exercise in extreme styling and ambitious performance. It was created by Ghia and debuted as a show car at the Salone di Torino of 1955, later touring around Europe, then the US. The car was nicknamed after Rita Hayworths performance in the 1946 film noir classic Gilda. It has been called one of the ten most significant show cars by Strother MacMinn.

Fabrication of the Gilda was completed to the same standards of other Ghia coachwork for Italian chassis such as Ferrari and Maserati. But unlike the cars produced for wealthy clients, the Steamlines shape was one of Ghias most spectacular.

The initial idea was to power the Gilda by a gas-turbine engine, but that never happened. At the time, Ghia released a theoretical top speed figure of 140 mph , but it went untested probably due to the engine choice. Never intended for production, the car had no rear suspension and was never driven.

With all of that modification, the Yellowbird was the fastest car in the world when it came out, topping out at 213 mph.

Most Beautiful Cars On Sale For 2021

Aesthetics are subjective, but these stunning cars fit our definition of beauty.

There are as many different styles in the automotive world as there are types of vehicles. And these schools of stylistic thought transcend body style and segment. Menacing describes a Lamborghini Aventador, but a Lexus NXs angry mug, too. And a Rolls-Royce might be stately, but so is a Range Rover. But no matter the size or style of vehicle, or the guiding principle in its design, there are those special examples that combine proportions, surface treatment, and detailing to an unusually special degree. These are what we consider to be the 15 most beautiful cars for sale today. If you don’t agree, well, that’s the beauty of subjectivity.

Alfa Romeo’s pointy, shield-shaped grille may not be for everyone, but the Giulia wears it well and the rest of the car is truly gorgeous. This sport sedan is perfectly proportioned, with a long hood and a cabin set back toward the rear wheels, and the body surfacing and details are exquisite. And every Giulia shares the same good looks Alfa Romeo doesn’t muck up the base models or reserve the choicest flourishes for the range-topping, high-performance Giulia Quadrifoglio. We think that the base Giulia’s tamer front and rear bumpers, lack of side vents, and additional chrome trim actually add to the design’s appeal.

Toyota Sprinter Trueno Ae86

Painted in a signature panda white and black, and emblazoned with the logo of the Fujiwara Tofu shop, this is the hero car of the series, driven by young racing prodigy Takumi Fujiwara, who doesn’t actually seem to care much about racing.

The Sprinter Trueno is very similar to the Corolla GT-S that Canada got, and the popularity of the series led to a huge jump in value for these once-neglected cars. Regrettably, while many young men were trying to learn to drift like their animated hero, they often ended up making an unintended off-road excursion, meaning that even fewer have survived we just couldn’t find any.
