The undisputed top speed champion is once again a Bugatti. Again limited to 30 customer cars, like the Veyron Super Sport, this purpose-built speed machine was taken to 304.773mph by British sportscar veteran Andy Wallace at the VW Groups Ehra-Lessien test track. Appropriately nicknamed Thor , the Chirons quad-turbocharged W16 engine produced 1578bhp in record-setting guise. It was given a new gearbox with longer ratios, and front and rear bumpers that were optimised for high speed runs.

What Car Holds The Land Speed Record

The current land speed record is held by Thrust SSC , a British project, which clocked 763mph in the Nevada desert in 1997 piloted by Andy Green.

Thrust SSC was the first car to break the sound barrier thanks to its twin Rolls-Royce turbofan aircraft engines producing an equivalent of around 102,000bhp.

Thrust SSCs record has, after almost 25 years, not been beaten despite the efforts of various contenders, including the Bloodhound SSC , another British effort headed by Thrust SSCs driving force and a former land speed record-holder himself, Richard Noble. Bloodhound was set to have been driven by Andy Green again.

The jet and rocked-powered Bloodhound LSR is theoretically capable of 1,000mph and has in testing reached 628mph, though financial difficulties have prevented further test runs and the projects future is unclear.

Both Thrust and Bloodhound look nothing like cars as we know them and, as both are powered by jets or rockets, neither are wheel-driven. Turbinator II a streamliner run by Team Vesco in the United States is the fastest wheel-driven car in the world having attained a speed of 503mph in 2018.

Bugatti Veyron Limiter Removal

On 4 July 2010 the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport reached 431.072 km/h two-way average. Bugatti built 30 Super Sports . At the time the record was set it was known that the customer cars were electronically limited to 415 km/h . Guinness Book of Records listed the unlimited 431.072 km/h as production car speed record.

Yet, 3 years later, after a query by the Sunday Times Guinness’ PR director Jaime Strang was quoted: “As the car’s speed limiter was deactivated, this modification was against the official guidelines. Consequently, the vehicle’s record set at 431.072 km/h is no longer valid.” 5 days later it was written on its website: “Guinness World Records would like to confirm that Bugatti’s record has not been disqualified the record category is currently under review.” Five days later Bugatti’s speed record was confirmed: “Following a thorough review conducted with a number of external experts, Guinness World Records is pleased to announce the confirmation of Bugatti’s record of Fastest production car achieved by the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport. The focus of the review was with respect to what may constitute a modification to a car’s standard specification. Having evaluated all the necessary information, Guinness World Records is now satisfied that a change to the speed limiter does not alter the fundamental design of the car or its engine.”

Koenigsegg Gemera 19 Seconds

The Koenigsegg Gemera is the worlds quickest production car that hits the 0-60 mph mark within 1.9 seconds. The Ssc Tuatara Claims Fastest Car In The World Title

The fastest production car is AmericanSweden’s Koenigsegg was the previous record-holder.

After a much-publicized and highly scrutinized initial top-speed record run in October of last yearyou can read about that run below, and the controversy hereSSC has announced a new top-speed record for production cars at 282.9 mph with its Tuatara hypercar. It was the third attempt for the company after the initial run and a December effort thwarted by mechanical issues professional racer Oliver Webb was the driver in October, while the car’s owner, Larry Caplin, took the wheel for tries two and three.

The Tuatara hit a two-way average speed of 282.9 mph using 2.3 miles of a three-mile runway at Kennedy Space Center, with the data being captured using Racelogic VBOX equipment, as well as hardware and/or software from Life Racing and Garmin. The International Mile Racing Association is also touted as validating the speed. The first, northbound run registered 279.7 mph, while during the second, the Tuatara hit 286.1 mph in 1.9 miles before Caplin began to decelerate. The runs were made 50 minutes apart. While achieving speed records grabs great headlines, Shelby is keen to point out that the Tuatara is first and foremost a daily-drivable car designed to tear up a road circuit. The steering system provides some evidence of this assertionit uses electricity to vary the ratio, but the assistance is purely hydraulic and it gets its own oil cooler, which clearly could only be useful on a handling circuit, not on a seven-mile arrow-straight closed highway. And a big driver of the flat-plane crank design was its unique sound signature. Shelby realizes cars like this are emotional purchases, and they need a visceral sound to connect with buyers. He wanted something less howling than a Ferrari, but also nothing like an American muscle car. The Venom reached 270.4 mph at the Kennedy Space Centers 3.2-mile landing strip, but only in one direction. Since both directions are required for a record-holding run, in addition to a production volume of 30 or more cars , the Hennessey doesnt qualify for official record books. But still, the beast has surpassed 270 mph, and thats impressive as hell.
