Averaging 7 Mph An American Car Beats Out German And Electric
It is said that the first automobile race occurred when the second automobile was built.
But the first official automobile race occurred this week in 1895 in Chicago, Illinois after H.H. Kohlsaat, owner of the Chicago Times Herald, read about the worlds first automobile race in France.
In an effort to boost circulation and woo advertisers, he decided to sponsor a race from downtown Chicago to Milwaukee, and back for inventors who can construct practicable, self-propelling road carriages. But poor roads north of Racine prompted organizers to shorten the route, running 54 miles from Chicago to Evanston, Illinois and back.
The contest was open to all foreign or domestic cars, whether powered by gas, electricity, or steam. First prize is $2,000 and a gold medal. Second prize was nearly as generous, at $1,500, while third prize was $1,000. Thats the equivalent of $59,602, $44,701 and $29,801 respectively when adjusted for inflation.
Initially meant to be run Nov. 9, Kohlsaat postpones the contest.
The reason for the postponement was chiefly the shortness of the time for preparation, Kohlsaat said. A number of foreign machines were shipped on a steamer, which is overdue. Then, the home manufacturers found the time short. In addition, the judges said they were convinced that a great number of manufacturers were honestly desirous of competing for the prize, and would do so if the race should be postponed.
Rise Of Japanese Automakers
Engineering in the postwar era was subordinated to the questionable aesthetics of nonfunctional styling at the expense of economy and safety. And quality deteriorated to the point that by the mid-1960s American-made cars were being delivered to retail buyers with an average of twenty-four defects a unit, many of them safety-related. Moreover, the higher unit profits that Detroit made on gas-guzzling road cruisers were made at the social costs of increased air pollution and a drain on dwindling world oil reserves.
The era of the annually restyled road cruiser ended with the imposition of federal standards of automotive safety , emission of pollutants , and energy consumption with escalating gasoline prices following the oil shocks of 1973 and 1979 and especially with the mounting penetration of both the U.S. and world markets first by the German Volkswagen Bug and then by Japanese fuel-efficient, functionally designed, well-built small cars.
After peaking at a record 12.87 million units in 1978, sales of American-made cars fell to 6.95 million in 1982, as imports increased their share of the U.S. market from 17.7 percent to 27.9 percent. In 1980 Japan became the worlds leading auto producer, a position it continues to hold.

Transmission And Drive Train
The Model T is a rear-wheel drive vehicle. Its transmission is a planetary gear type known as âthree speed.â In todayâs terms it is considered a two-speed, because one of the three speeds is reverse.
The Model Tâs transmission is controlled with three floor-mounted pedals and a lever mounted to the road side of the driverâs seat. The throttle is controlled with a lever on the steering wheel. The left-hand pedal is used to engage the transmission. With the floor lever in either the mid position or fully forward and the pedal pressed and held forward, the car enters low gear. When held in an intermediate position, the car is in neutral. If the left pedal is released, the Model T enters high gear, but only when the lever is fully forward in any other position, the pedal only moves up as far as the central neutral position. This allows the car to be held in neutral while the driver cranks the engine by hand. The car can thus cruise without the driver having to press any of the pedals.
In the first 800 units, reverse is engaged with a lever all units after that use the central pedal, which is used to engage reverse gear when the car is in neutral. The right-hand pedal operates the transmission brake there are no brakes on the wheels. The floor lever also controls the parking brake, which is activated by pulling the lever all the way back. This doubles as an emergency brake.

Karl Benz : Car Pioneer
Karl Benz gets the credit for inventing the automobile because his car was practical, used a gasoline-powered internal-combustion engine and worked like modern cars do today.
Benz was born in 1844 in Karlsruhe, a city in southwest Germany. His father was a railway worker who died in an accident when Benz was 2 years old. Although poor, Benz’s mother supported him and his education. He was admitted to the University of Karlsruhe at age 15 and graduated in 1864 with a mechanical engineering degree.
Benz’s first venture of an iron foundry and sheet-metal workshop flopped. However his new bride, Bertha Ringer, used her dowry to fund a new factory to build gas engines. With the profits Benz was free to start building a horseless, gas-powered carriage.
Benz had built three prototypes of his Motor Car in private by 1888, when Bertha decided it was time for some press. Bertha took the latest model in the early morning and drove her two teenage sons 66 miles to her mother’s home. She had to improvise repairs along the way with shoe leather, a hair pin and her garter.
The successful trip showed Benz how to improve the car, and showed a dubious public that automobiles were useful. Benz demonstrated the Model 3 Motorwagen at the World’s Fair in Paris the following year.
Benz died in 1929, just two years after he merged with fellow car-maker Gottlieb Daimler’s company to form what is today the Daimler Group, manufacturer of the Mercedes-Benz.

What Was The First American Car
This is kind of a tricky question, as it frankly depends on what you consider to be a car. Cars with steam engines existed well before cars with gasoline engines, but perhaps you don’t consider steam cars to be real cars by modern standards.

Gas Shortages Spark Interest In Electric Vehicles
Over the next 30 years or so, electric vehicles entered a sort of dark ages with little advancement in the technology. Cheap, abundant gasoline and continued improvement in the internal combustion engine hampered demand for alternative fuel vehicles.
Fast forward to the late 1960s and early 1970s. Soaring oil prices and gasoline shortages — peaking with the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo — created a growing interest in lowering the U.S.s dependence on foreign oil and finding homegrown sources of fuel. Congress took note and passed the Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Research, Development, and Demonstration Act of 1976, authorizing the Energy Department to support research and development in electric and hybrid vehicles.
Around this same time, many big and small automakers began exploring options for alternative fuel vehicles, including electric cars. For example, General Motors developed a prototype for an urban electric car that it displayed at the Environmental Protection Agencys First Symposium on Low Pollution Power Systems Development in 1973, and the American Motor Company produced electric delivery jeeps that the United States Postal Service used in a 1975 test program. Even NASA helped raise the profile of the electric vehicle when its electric Lunar rover became the first manned vehicle to drive on the moon in 1971.
The Model A Name Returned In 1928

This era of the Ford Model A is more popular than the original, even though this iteration of the name only ran from 1928 to 1931. It was bigger than the Ford Model T, and had far more trims available. You could have it as a tuck, a station wagon, a roadster or coupe, even a taxi cab variant was built. And it soon became the second most successful Ford ever built.
With a 3.3 liter four-cylinder engine and a more modern three-speed transmission, the Ford Model A packed 40 horsepower. With a top speed of 65 mph, it could handle highways that didnt even exist yet.
In just 25 years, Henry Ford went from a single runabout car first bought by a dentist to conquering both domestic and international car markets. Without the Model A turning a profit at the turn of the century, there would be no Model T. And if there were no Model T, the Model A wouldnt have come back to replace it. In other words, these two cars were the origins of automobiles, and history wouldnt be the same without them.

What Preceded The Invention Of The First Car
Although most historians would agree that Benz created the first real car in 1885, the idea of a horseless carriage was there a long time before.
Lets start with the history of the automobile with Ferdinand Verbiest. Ferdinand was a missionary in China and during his pilgrimage, he became a good friend with the Chinese emperor.
In the 1670s, Ferdinand made a toy car as a gift for the emperor, now known as the first self-propelled vehicle.
Although, since it was only 25,6 inch long and could not transport people, we can hardly call it a car.
The second on this list is Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot. In 1769, he built first ever steam-powered vehicle capable of human transport for the French army.
Uniquely, the vehicle had a speed of only 2.5 mph and was so hard to steer that the French army had to give up the project.
Namely, another memorable patent was by the French inventor and politician Francois Isaac de Rivaz who designed the worlds first internal combustion powered automobile fueled by hydrogen, in 1808.
As a result, Francois created the first-ever vehicle powered by hydrogen.
In 1870 Siegfried Marcus built the first gasoline-powered combustion engine which he put on a simple handcart.
The only way to start the cart was to lift the drive wheels off the ground and spin them.
In 1876 Nikolaus Otto designed the first-ever four-stroke petrol internal combustion engine.

The Importance Of Nicolaus Otto
One of the most important landmarks in engine design comes from Nicolaus August Otto who in 1876 invented an effective gas motor engine. Otto built the first practical four-stroke internal combustion engine called the “Otto Cycle Engine,” and as soon as he had completed his engine, he built it into a motorcycle. Otto’s contributions were very historically significant, it was his four-stroke engine that was universally adopted for all liquid-fueled automobiles going forward.
Ford Of Europe Introduces The Ford Fiesta
The subcompact hatchback became the companys first internationally successful front-wheel drive model. At $870 million, its development budget was also the largest in Fords history. Moreover, Ford built a massive plant in Almusafes, Spain, near Valencia, to manufacture the car. The investments paid off, and the Fiesta broke the one-year sales record of the 1965 Mustang.
From 1978 to 1981, Ford also sold the European Fiesta in North America. However, it wasnt until 2009 that Ford would begin selling the Fiesta in the U.S.

Who Then Was First
That the very first automobile company was born in the United Kingdom seems like a safe bet Englishman Thomas Savery patented the first commercial steam engine, a crude device used to pump water, in 1698. Patents for steam wagons or steam carriages started emerging there in the early part of the 19th century, and a number of operators were running surprisingly advanced steam carriages on public roadways by the 1830s.
One promising contender is Summers and Ogle, a partnership formed by William Alltoft Summers and Nathaniel Ogle to build these steam carriages. In 1831, the pair purchased an old iron foundry in Southampton, England, to go into production. These carriages were somewhat successful, with a number of documented routes in service throughout 1831 and 1832. Incredibly, their first contraption could manage speeds of 32 to 35 mphthats Model T territory, in the 1830s!
However, it looks like English inventor Goldsworthy Gurney beat them to the punch. In addition to work on stoves, lighting devices and the oxy-hydrogen blowpipe, Gurney took an interest in steam propulsion and sought to popularize steam-powered road vehicles. And under the auspices of the Gurney Steam Carriage Company, established 1825, he set about to do just thatand almost succeeded.
Production Of The Model T And The Decline Of The Automobile Industry
When Henry Ford introduced his Model T in 1908, he changed the way people traveled. With affordable prices and reliable transportation, the Model T quickly became a popular choice for drivers and consumers alike. However, over the years Fords automobile company would face many challenges including competition from other car companies and a decline in demand for cars. By 1934, Ford discontinued production of the Model T marking the end of an era in automotive history.
