How Do I Replace A Car Battery Myself

Car battery prices … who really has the lowest price?

A confident do-it-your-selfer can replace a vehicle battery. Start by checking your vehicle owners manual for the batterys proper size and location. Find the positive and negative posts. The positive post will have a red plastic cover over it. Look for a + sign stamped onto the battery or printed on a nearby label. Loosen the negative terminal bolt and remove the cable. Be sure not to touch the positive post. Once you loosen the bolt, use a terminal puller to remove the cable. Repeat the sequence with the positive post.

Now remove the clamp or retaining system that keeps the battery in place. Carefully lift out the old battery. Look for any corrosion on the cables and remove it with a wire brush or terminal cleaning tool.

Drop in the new battery so that the positive post lines up with the red cable. Secure it with the battery retaining clamp that you removed earlier. If the battery has anti-corrosion washers, put them in place now and use a thin layer of anti-corrosion grease to prevent buildup. Tighten the positive cable and then do it all over again with the negative black cable.

Make sure the battery is secure and congratulations: youve replaced your cars battery!

When Do You Need To Replace Your Car Battery

If You Are Unable To Start Your Car

After several attempts to start your car, this may be a key indicator that it is time to consider replacing your battery.

A new battery has a specified capacity to provide power. This is referred to as the cranking amps rating of the battery. As a battery ages, the actual amps that a battery can supply becomes lower than its original rating. Once the cranking amps fall below a critical threshold, it will be difficult or impossible to start your car.

If Your Battery Or Charging Warning Light Is Illuminated

If you see your warning lights illuminated, it is an indication that something may not be right. You should get a car battery replacement specialist to test your battery and determine the best solution for your vehicle.

If Electrical Components Within Your Vehicle Are Not Working

If electrical systems are inactive, it is worth getting the assistance of a battery expert to test your car battery.

What To Look For When Buying

Car Battery Prices
  • Reserve Capacity

It is the amount of time the battery can continuously supply the minimum voltage required to run the vehicle when the fan belt or car alternator fails. A cell with a good RC rating should enable the car to run on the battery alone when the alternator is not working. It acts as the vehicle’s emergency mode that helps you to continue driving the car instead of getting stuck. The RC is displayed in the form of minutes on the product information.

  • Sealed vs. Non-Sealed Batteries

Sealed batteries don’t require lots of maintenance compared to non-sealed batteries. However, they are not the best for warm climates as it is difficult to add water to cool them. Non-sealed batteries have caps that allow motorists to add water hence, ideal for places that experience high temperatures.

  • The Power Requirement

It is measured in Cranking Amps and Cold Cranking Amps . Cranking Amps refers to the amount of energy needed to start a car at 32 degrees Fahrenheit while Cold Cranking Amps is the battery’s ability to start a vehicle at zero degrees. As such, CCA batteries are ideal for cold climates and CA for hot places.

  • The Age of the Battery

It is displayed in the form of a code that has a number and a letter. The figure represents the year of manufacture, and the letter represents the month.

As such, if the battery is labeled C/17, it was manufactured on March 2017.

How To Find The Right Replacement

Before you buy a new car battery, know the correct group number for your vehicle, which varies depending on make, model, year, and engine size.

Batteries are defined by physical size, type, and placement of the terminals, as well as mounting style. Be sure to replace your battery with one that’s from the same group so that it will fit its tray and the leads will connect properly.

The basic specs for a replacement battery can be read off the battery that’s currently in your car.

There are other sources to help you select the proper battery, including your owner’s manual, battery company websites, an in-store guide, or your local mechanic. If you bought a used car, don’t assume it has the proper battery installed. Be sure to check with one of those other sources to identify the correct type.

Tip : Choose The Right Type Of Battery For Your Vehicle

The Best deal on automotive battery ?

We all know that every vehicle requires a specific type of battery. Each vehicle needs a different amount of power and differently sized battery.;

For instance, many cars come with AGMs to support an increasing array of electrical components, and the charge system may be configured specifically for an AGM battery. Thus, you need to check your vehicles maintenance guide to know what kind of battery is suitable for your car.

  • If you lose the maintenance guide, you will need to take your car to a repair shop and ask a mechanic to identify the type of your car battery.
  • If you go camping often, especially if you like boondocking without electrical hookups, you must get a deep cycle battery on top of your usual cranking battery for powering your appliances and devices.
  • Because climate has a huge impact on the way a car battery works, you should choose a battery appropriate for your local weather conditions. Cold-weather batteries are often labeled N or North. Hot-weather batteries might be labeled S or South. In some cases, owners can replace an AGM battery with a traditional flooded one to boost longevity in hot climates, but its best to consult a mechanic first.;
  • If you are an off-road driver, a battery which can endure constant vibrations will be a better choice for you.

Over the past few decades, technology has been growing significantly. Now and then, new inventions find their way into the market intending to make our lives better. Take a look at the vehicle industry, for instance.

Today, you will find different vehicle models being released into the market to meet peoples transport needs. Long ago, vehicles depended on peoples workforce to start. Luckily, that mode of operation has slowly faded away. Today, you only need a key, and youre good to go as cars have batteries and alternators to perform the hard task.

Therefore, a cars battery remains a crucial component in every vehicle. The electric cars, for instance, depend on this component to start, as well as, run from one point to another.

A shallow digging over the internet will tell you that the battery, especially for EVs, is the most expensive component amongst all the vehicle parts. Therefore, when it comes to buying a new battery to fit a car, drivers are always scared of landing on the wrong or fake battery.

Where is the best place to buy a car battery? There is no straightforward answer to this query as there are many places you can buy a new battery for your EV or petroleum/diesel car.

Tip : Avoid Purchasing Old Batteries

Batteries lose their strength even when we store them carefully. Therefore, you should always buy a new one which was manufactured within the last 6 months to make sure what you buy is the bestcar battery at that time.

Tip: To know how old your battery is, you can check the four- or five-digit date code on the cover of your battery case. The first part of the code is key and consists of a letter and a digit, for instance D11. A letter is assigned to each month: A for January, B for February and so on.;

The number that follows denotes the year: for instance, 8 for 2008, 9 for 2009, 0 for 2010, 11 for 2011, 12 for 2012 and so on. So D11 means in April 2011, the battery was shipped from the factory to local battery wholesale distributors.;

Tip : Pick A Maintenance

Buying Cheap Wholesale Auto Batteries Can Save You Money

Thanks to advanced technology, most car batteries nowadays are maintenance-free which dont need any special attention. However, do note that the flooded type of lead-acid batteries require more maintenance. They lose water during the charge cycle, thus they require to be filled with distilled water only every 2-4 weeks as needed to function properly and stay healthy.;

Furthermore, flooded lead acid batteries should be equalized occasionally to make sure each cell is equally charged. You can do this by applying a controlled overcharge once every 30-90 days.;

Therefore, if you are not a handyman or would want to save time, you should buy a maintenance-free battery whenever possible, which is either a gel type or a fuss-free AGM.

Reviewers like this verified purchaser on OReilly Auto Parts site are impressed with the warranty and performance:

This is the best battery available for my 2003 F-150 XLT with power everything. Ive tried others but none were as good as the original. CR tests dozens each year to separate the positives from the negatives

At Consumer Reports, we test 150 individual car batteries every year in our lab to help you make smart decisions when it’s time to replace your battery. We test five examples of each rated model.

The tests are tough by design. We charge and discharge the batteries thousands of times to find out how long theyll last. We also put them in a freezer to see how theyll perform at 0º F, and we track how long theyll last if you leave your car’s headlights on or the charging system fails.

There are many factors that have an impact on how long a car battery will last, with weather being one of the most significant. That’s where our extreme testing can separate the ones with promise from those that come up short.

Many of the highest-scoring are pricey absorbed glass mat batteries. They’re known for having a long service life and being able to tolerate deep dischargeswhen the battery has been significantly drained to 10.5 volts or below, such as when the lights are left on overnight. But some top-rated lead-acid batteries cost less than many of their competitors, says John Banta, CR’s test engineer for batteries.

How Do I Jump Start A Car

Need a New Car Battery? How to Choose the Right Type

The next time you insert the key or push the ignition button and nothing happens, follow these simple steps:

  • Pull the jumper cables out of your trunk and find another car that can give you a jump.
  • Put both vehicles in park and shut off the ignition.
  • Attach one of the red clips to the positive terminal on your dead battery and the other red clip to the red POS post on the good battery. If you need help figuring out which terminal is which, look for POS or +.
  • Attach the black clip to the negative terminal of the good battery.
  • DO NOT attach the black clip to the black battery post on the dead battery. Sparking could ignite the dead batterys electrolyte fumes. Instead, clip the other black clip to a clean, unpainted metal surface under the hood.
  • Start the vehicle with the good battery and let it run for approximately five minutes. Even though the other vehicle isnt running yet, this will put some charge into its dead battery.
  • Now try to start the vehicle with the dead battery.
  • If the engine doesnt turn over, it may need to build up more charge. Rev up the donor engine so that its battery delivers more amperage in the process. Then try again.
  • If it starts, dont turn it off quite yet. Drive a while. The alternator may be able to recharge the battery on its own. If not, the battery charge is too low, and you need a replacement.

How Many Cold Cranking Amps Do I Need

The official rule of thumb for cold cranking amps is one cubic inch of engine displacement means you need one cold cranking amp. However, unless youve done some engine modifications, theres an easier way to find out. Just check your owners manual.

The manufacturer has a recommended minimum cold cranking amp for your vehicle, and this is what is best to use. Keep in mind you can always get more cold-cranking amps without and drawbacks. You dont need to find a battery with the EXACT amount of cold-cranking amps that the manufacturer recommends.

You should also keep in mind the temperature of where you will be driving when deciding how many cold cranking amps you need. Youve probably heard that its harder to start your car in the cold. Theres a ton of truth to this.

To help you out, you can get a battery that has more cold cranking amps. So, if you live up in Alaska or somewhere else it gets extremely cold, it wont hurt to get 100 or 200 extra cold-cranking amps on your battery to make sure you can start your car on even the coldest winter nights.
