How To Save Money On Car Insurance

Paying too much for car insurance? What can I do to make sure we’re getting the best rate?

From the moment you start shopping around for auto insurance, there are a number of ways you can save. Even if you already have an existing car insurance policy, there are still some steps you can take to lower your premiums.

  • Bundle your home and auto insurance: Combining multiple policies with the same company can earn you serious savings

  • Take advantage of car insurance discounts: Check with an agent to make sure youâre getting every discount you can, including discounts for having certain safety features in your car, or for taking a defensive driving course

  • Change your coverage limits: Not every driver needs the highest level of every coverage. We recommend liability levels of $100,000 per person, $300,000 per accident in bodily injury liability and $100,000 per accident in property damage liability, typically written as 100/300/100 on your insurance policy

  • Raise your deductible amount: A higher comprehensive or collision deductible means lower premiums â just remember you may actually have to pay that amount when you file a claim

  • Shop around once a year: Even if youâre happy with your coverage, reshopping your car insurance annually with Policygenius can help you save big and make sure youâre not paying too much for coverage

  • How Can You Save On Car Insurance

With inflation swallowing more of your paycheck, its prudent to find ways to get more out of your dollar. One way to save on car insurance is to choose a vehicle with low insurance costs if youre buying a car. For instance, youll pay less for car insurance if you drive a Honda CR-V compared to a Tesla Model S.. But most drivers said they werent willing to change vehicles to get cheap car insurance. Only 37% said they would change vehicles to save on coverage.

Here are other ways to save on car insurance:

    • Shop around and get quotes from multiple car insurance companies. This will give you a better sense of whether youre overpaying.

The specifickinds of car insurance coverage that make up your policy will also help determine the price of your monthly premiums. A so-called full coverage auto insurance policy includes comprehensive and collision coverage in addition to liability.

Liability coverage, which is the backbone of a policy, covers the costs if you injure someone or damage their property with your car, while collision coverage covers damage to your own car after an accident, even if you caused it, and comprehensive coverage covers damage not from car accidents, like if a heavy tree branch falls on your car.

Insurance companies pour billions of dollars into the economy each year to fund a seismic wave of television ads pitching consumers the notion that saving big money on their cars coverage is only a phone call away. And though many of us may view such pitches with a jaundiced eye, this is one case in which the advertisers are in fact spot on.

According to a survey conducted by the personal finance website NerdWallet.com, 38% of motorists havent bothered to compare or otherwise evaluate their car insurance costs within the last three or more years 17% havent checked at all. That means good drivers are missing out on what NerdWallet.com determines is an average $417 savings by blindly sticking with their current carriers. And that amount swells in higher-premium states like Delaware, Michigan, and Connecticut, where unsuspecting consumers are leaving up to an annual average of $1,846 on the table by not shopping around.

Ironically, 28% of the surveys respondents, and a third of millennials queried already believe theyre paying too much for car insurance. Perhaps not surprisingly, U.S. drivers with modest incomes of $50,000-$75,000 are more likely to complain about paying high premiums than those earning more than $75,000 . Here’s a link to the full report.

In addition to comparing rates among carriers, motorists should consider tweaking their coverage to help further lower their premiums.

Is Car Insurance Cheaper If You Own Your Car

Am I Paying Too Much Car Insurance?

Car insurance premiums don’t automatically go down when you pay off your car, but you can probably lower your premium by dropping coverage that’s no longer required. Unlike when you have a loan or lease, owning your car means there’s no financing or leasing company requiring you to have comprehensive or collision coverage. Therefore, you may have the flexibility to decrease your coverage and get a cheaper rate once your car is paid in full.

Other Ways To Lower Your Rates

While life changes in your twenties and thirties can certainly affect your rates, there are other, more active steps you can take to ensure you are getting the best possible deal on your auto insurance.

    • Combine policies. When shopping around, check first with the company that provides your renter’s or homeowner’s insurance. You could snag up to 15% off for a multiple-line policy.

    • Drop collision and comprehensive on an old car. If you drive a beater — say, one worth less than $2,000 — you’ll probably pay more to insure it than you would ever collect on a claim. Dropping that part of your coverage can reduce your premium by one-third.

    • Raise your deductible. Upping your out-of-pocket outlay from $250 to $1,000 on any car can save you 15% or more.

    • Clean up your driving record. Three years without a ticket or accident are usually enough to qualify you for the lowest premiums available. It pays to drive safely.

    • Boost your credit score. We’ve mentioned credit scores above, but you needn’t settle for a mediocre or nonexistant rating. Taking small steps to improve your score can lower your insurance rates in a big way.

    Age
    $1,604

Along with your location and your driving history, age is one of the most important factors when it comes to your car insurance rates. Younger, less experienced drivers pay more because theyâre more likely to have an accident and file a claim.

Your gender can also have an effect on your rates, although some states donât allow car insurance companies to use gender as a factor when calculating how much to charge for coverage.

Why Auto Insurance Companies Overcharge Customers

Auto insurance is required in all states except New Hampshire. Yet while states require their drivers purchase car insurance, they do not regulate insurance pricing. As a result, too many drivers are overpaying for insurance.

The insurance industry is not transparent, which makes it difficult for customers to compare rates across carriers. Shopping for car insurance is not like browsing health insurance plans on the state exchanges, where you can compare plans by pricing and whats covered before deciding whats right for you. This gives auto insurers the upper hand in setting rates and in keeping their rate information hidden from customers.

The issue is aggravated by the fact that most people find it inconvenient to switch car insurance providers. Once an auto insurer has gotten your initial business, they know youre likely to stick with them even if you suspect they could be overcharging you. This simple fact reduces their incentive to compete on price.

Overcharging on auto insurance leads some consumers who cannot afford to pay premiums to drive without insurance, which makes the roads less safe for everyone.

What Factors Should You Consider Beyond Price

Thanks to the internet, reading reviews about car insurance companies is pretty simple. Price suggests looking up a companys customer satisfaction ratings on a site such as J.D. Power, a consumer data firm. In its 2020 auto insurance claims satisfaction survey, the company polled more than 11,000 drivers who filed a claim in 2020 to determine which companies customers were most satisfied with the claims process.

J.D. Power ratings give you insight into a companys customer service, and that helps determine if they care about the customers, Price says. Also consider how easy it is to file a claim and how many hours you have to wait on the phone for service if you have a claim.

And then theres the really big one to consider: Will your rates go through the roof if you have an accident? ValuePenguin recently compared rates before and after an accident for the five biggest car insurance companies in the U.S. The takeaway? Those insured by Allstate saw the largest increase in rates after an accident, while State Farm tended to penalize drivers less, according to the ValuePenguin comparison.

    Pricing Based On Your Bio

What you pay for auto insurance has a lot to do with your behavior on the road, including past collisions and speeding tickets, along with factors such as what car you own and how many miles you drive each year.

But when they set rates, insurers can also lean on biographical details that you dont control, such as your age or gender. They may also look at financial factors that seem to have little to do with how safely you drive, including your credit history and whether you rent or own your home. In 2015, Consumer Reports found that socioeconomic factors sometimes outweigh driving records and habits in the premiums that insurers set.

Some insurers also consider peoples education and occupation when they decide what to charge, arguing that theres a correlation between those factors and the financial risk of insuring a customer.

Even if thats true on average, its unfair to individuals, says Chuck Bell, a policy advocate and insurance expert at Consumer Reports. No one should have to pay a penny more for auto insurance just because they havent graduated from college or have a working-class job, he says.

To understand how insurers are using education and occupation to set premiums, Consumer Reports requested almost 900 online car insurance quotes from nine insurers. We used 21 ZIP codes that covered Washington, D.C., and six states, including New Jersey and Oregon, where lawmakers are debating bills to ban the practice.
