Its a good idea to read these instructions, locate all the appropriate lines on the title, and read any instructions on the title before you start filling in information.

Turn to the back of your Mississippi car title and look near the top.

  • Under the words Assignment of title by registered owner, print the buyers name and full address on the appropriate lines.
  • On the next line, write in the vehicles current mileage.
  • On the next line, the seller should sign their name. Note that if the car is owned by two people, both of those people must fit their signatures on this line.     Odometer Price And Damage Information

    States differ on necessary forms, price, damage and odometer statement requirements. Some state titles require detailed information on the title, while others do not because of additional required forms.

    Read the title over to determine which other information you must include. Most states require an odometer statement, but you may not have to complete the section if the vehicle is more than 10 years old. This document includes important information about the transferor and transferee along with vehicle details like the year, model, make and vehicle ID number. The statement also has a place where the seller signs off that they’ve provided truthful information about the mileage to the best of their knowledge.

    If an area doesn’t exist for the vehicle’s sales price, you likely have to provide additional documents. Call your state’s motor vehicle department to find out if you must provide additional forms to the buyer.

    Turn to the back of your South Dakota title and look near the middle of the page.

  • In the large box that says Odometer, enter your vehicles current mileage.
  • Look for a series of colored boxes under the Odometer section. The first one should say Date of sale. On the second line, the purchaser should sign their name. Again, note that if two people are buying the vehicle, both of them need to print and sign their names on the same lines.

    Its a good idea to read these instructions, locate all the appropriate lines on the title, and read any instructions on the title before you start filling in information.

  • Turn to the back of your New Jersey car title and look near the top. There is a small blank line where you can write in the vehicles current mileage.
  • Look for a small colored rectangle that says Buyers name. Right next to it is a line where the buyer can print their name. Next to that is a line where the buyer should fill in their drivers license number.
  • Where it says Buyers address, write the street address on the top line and the city, state and zip code on the bottom line.
  • If a second person will own the vehicle, they should fill in their name and address near the colored rectangle that says Co-buyers name. They should also write down their drivers license number on the line to the right of the page.
  • Look for the colored rectangle that says Sellers name. The seller should print their name on the first line, and write in their address on the following two lines.
  • To the right of these lines, the seller should write in the following information on the appropriate lines: Date the vehicle was sold and sale price.
  • If a second person is releasing their ownership interest in the vehicle, they can print and sign their name on a set of lines to the right.

  • In the right column, the seller should sign their name where it says Signature of seller. They should print their name under that where it says Printed name of seller. Again, if there are two people selling the car, both people need to fit their names on these lines.

    Tip #: Double Check The Vin

    The vehicle identification number must be correctly written on the title and match the VIN that is on the vehicles windshield. If this doesnt happen, the buyer could have a problem on their hands when they go to register the car.     Get New License Plates

    Since the vehicle has changed ownership, you’ll need to get new plates.

    There are exceptions – Plates don’t need to be replaced if:

    • You’re removing a deceased spouse or domestic partner from the title.

    Get A Negotiable Title From The Seller

    It is unwise to rely on a sellers promise to get the title to you. Although Utah law requires a seller to provide a title within 48 hours of the transaction, a common-sense approach is to obtain a title at the time of sale, or wait to pay for the vehicle until the seller can provide the title. Without a negotiable title, you cannot title and register the vehicle in your name. A negotiable title is one that:

    • Belongs to the vehicle being purchased. Check the make, model and compare the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number against the VIN on the car.
    • Has been properly signed off by the seller. If the title is in more than one persons name , both may need to sign. If the title says, John Doe and Jane Doe, both must sign off on the title. If the title lists John Doe or Jane Doe, only one must sign. No notary is needed to sign off on a title.

    If a Utah title is lost, the buyer and seller may fill out a Form TC-123, Application for a Duplicate Title. This document, properly completed, can then be used to register the vehicle in the purchasers name.

    Also have a properly completed Form TC-891, Odometer Disclosure Statement filled out and signed by the owner and the buyer .

    If the title shows a lien holder, verify that the lien has been released.

    Where To Sign A Car Title In Wyoming

    Its a good idea to read these instructions, locate all the appropriate lines on the title, and read any instructions on the title before you start filling in information. Note that Wyoming titles must be notarized. Typically thats done at the county clerks office or anywhere else that provides notary services. Dont fill out the title until you get to the office, and bring photo identification with you. If you dont, the notary will not be able to notarize your signature. If two or more people own the vehicle, and one or more of those people cannot go to the clerks office and have their signature witnessed, the seller can bring a Warranty and Notarization Statement for each person.

    Turn to the back of your Wyoming car title and look near the top.

  • On the first line, print the buyers name.
  • On the next set of lines, print the buyers street address on the top line. On the line below that, print the sellers city, state and zip code in the appropriate places.
  • The next set of lines is the odometer statement. The buyer should print their name on the longer line and write the current odometer reading on the shorter line.
  • Where it says Signature of seller, the seller should sign their name.
  • If two people own the vehicle, the second person can sign their name on the next line.
  • On the next line, both sellers can print their names.
  • On the next line, print the date the vehicle was sold.

There are four different types of titles in California. The states website has helpful diagrams that tell you where to sign on the different versions. These instructions assume you have a new rainbow title as opposed to the older pink slip.

  • Look at the front of the title near the middle. The current owner or owners need to write in the date and sign their names on the lines under the short declaration stating they are releasing interest in the vehicle.

    Proof Of Lien Release

    Many states do not allow title transfers when a lien holder is listed on the front of the title. Even if you paid off your loan, you must acquire a necessary lien release letter or obtain a proper bank signature. Some state titles offer a spot for the lien holder to sign on the title, which releases the vehicle’s lien.

    In states that don’t offer this section, a valid lien release is required. Call your lender to find out how to obtain the release. You may have to visit a local branch to obtain it or wait to receive it by mail. Give your buyer the original lien release, not a copy.
