How To Make The Best Car Air Freshener For Pennies

On our recent car trip, we decided to stop for dinner and then get back on the road. A half hour laterit startedthose smells! The ones where your nose hairs start burningyour gag reflex beckons and you rush to roll down all the windows and stick your entire head out of the window for fresh air.

I made a pit stop to air out the van and made them head to the bathroom to rid their body of the stench.

Yes, it was that bad!

But one thing that struck me later was, why I couldnt smell the brand new air freshener I had just added to the van before we left for our road trip? It had only been a couple of days since I had put it in!

Now I know that air fresheners can not block all of the smells , but the fresh smell was gone already! It did absolutely nothing to help the situation or clear the air afterward.

So I needed to find the best car air freshener with essential oils, one that would actually last, and that I could also freshen up the smell so that I didnt have to keep buying them.

Those store-bought air fresheners can be very expensive for one little item. Plus they contain all kinds of chemicals we are breathing in.

How To Make Aroma Bead Ornaments

  • Make your aroma beads as you normally would.
  • Beads should be cured at least 3-8 days after making.; The fragrance will only last about a week, if cooked immediately after drying.
  • Preheat oven to 325-350 degrees. You will have to test your oven to see what works best for you. Do NOT put the filled cookie cutters in before the oven is totally heated.* If you are doing this for the first time, Just make only 1-2 molds to try out the ;;;;oven first.
  • ***WE HIGHLY SUGGEST you use a silicone mold spay to spray your molds first. You can get from Michael’s. Using powders can make the beads stick more to the molds.
  • Cut a piece of parchment paper to fit your cookie sheet. You may also use a teflon stick-free cookie sheet.; You can get a cookie sheet at the dollar store too.;
  • * This is optional but will help protect your cookie sheet and also works great if you drop the beads.; Just;fold to funnel back to your container.
  • Place cookie molds on cookie sheet. Use the same size at the same time so they cook evenly!
  • Unless you are looking for a particular pattern, use the;thin of the cutter down against the cookie sheet. They are easier to pop out after cooling. This is optional. They will pop out either way.; Be cautious with specific shapes, as it may make a difference to the side you use…like Texas or any state!

  • Place;a roofing nail where you want a hole to be. We offer them on our site.
  • Pull tray out of the oven to cool.
  • We;use a 3/16 drill bit.

Custom Texas air freshie for a sweet customer!

If youre ready to get started on these yourself, here you go! First, start with a good set of metal cookie cutters. I recommend metal since we need something sturdy for the beads.

We used Valentines themed cookie cutters, since this is the time of year we made them. Use any cookie cutters you prefer. Generic ones like flowers will work for any time of year.

Next, you will need to have Aroma Beads which have been soaked with Fragrance Oil.

The soaking part of this DIY is what takes the longest. 2-3 weeks prior to your project, you will need to add the Aroma Beads along with your Fragrance Oil to a clean mason jar. Close the lid tightly and turn the jar upside down often, each day. You can also shake the jar to speed up the process. . You can find fragrance oil in craft stores, and go with any scent you prefer!

After the beads are no longer sticky, they are ready to go in the cookie cutters and you can finish your project.

How To Make A Car Air Freshener From Felt And Essential Oils

    1. Cut it out! Cut out a simple shape, about 4 tall, from wool felt. I used my Cricut to cut out a basic tree shape from paper, and then used that as a template to cut the same shape from felt.

    2. Make it smelly!;Drop several drops of your favorite combination of essential oils right onto the wool shape. Essential oils are a natural source of scent, and you can always benefit from aromatherapy in your carfor instance, I always include peppermint essential oil in my mix of scents, both because I find it a comforting scent and because it helps keep me awake on long drives. Youll want the scent to be too strong at first, because much of that will evaporate very quickly, so dont be afraid to have a heavy hand with the oils.

Youll also notice as you apply the oils that you can see them on the surface of the shape. Just set the wool shape aside for about a day, and the oils will soak into the middle of that nice, thick wool; youll no longer be able to see them on the surface, but if you press on the shape where you applied the oils, youll find that you still get a little oil on your finger. Thats the secret to how the air freshener is going to stay active for several weeks!

The bad news is that the scent of your car air freshener will die down over time, of course, although you can expect it to last for several weeks. But the good news is that when the scent does expire, you can replace it with an all new scent combination!

Car fresheners may promise the smell of ocean breeze or trees, but they rarely deliver. Instead, cars end up smelling like the sharper versions of the aromas car fresheners are trying to mimic. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Store-bought car fresheners contain harmful chemicals that nauseate a lot of people.

Luckily, essential oils provide an alternative to these harmful chemicals. They are natures fragrance and deodorizer. They also have a bundle of health benefits, in contrast to the harmful chemicals in commercial car fresheners. If you want an alternative to traditional car fresheners, try this DIY car freshener with essential oils recipe.

    Baking And Assembling Care Freshies:

In this picture we used our fully prepared aroma beads. We prepared a cookie sheet with parchment and set the cookie cutter down flat on the paper. Then, using a large nail with a good-sized nail head to keep it upright, poured the beads around it. The beads also help hold up the nail.

A clean nail worked well to keep a hole in the Care Freshie for the string. Dont forget this step you can really mess up your finished project if you are trying to poke a hole into it after it is done.

    Felt & Foam Air Freshener

    • A piece of string, ribbon or twine

    Directions:

First, youll need to decide what shape your want your air freshener to be. We made a couple of different fun shapes a sunburst, a seashell, and a flip flop!

Once youve decided what design youll be using, cut your design out twice; once using the adhesive craft foam, and once using the craft felt. We were able to cut out both using our Silhouette Curio.

When both your shapes are cut out, peel the paper backing off of the craft foam and stick it to the back of the felt piece.

Use a piece of twine or string to create a loop at the top to hang it from.

The last step is to add your scent! You can either just add a few drops of essential oils directly to the felt side, or you can use a small spray bottle like we did. Spraying the essential oils mixed with water will give you a more even distribution of oils.

When youre done, all thats left to do is hang your new air freshener from your rearview mirror!

Make Your Own Car Air Freshener

Did anyone ever get the recipe for the gel looking, cookie cutter shaped air fresheners being sold at craft fairs for 4.95 each with rope tied through top for hanging? I would like to make my own instead of buying and looking for them elsewhere. Hard to find.

    denise w

Hi everyone. Just a little tidbit of info for all. I’m one of those crafters who make and sell those aroma beads. I just wanted to let you know that by the time you order the product, pay shipping. make the beads and package them 4.95 is a steal, but if you want a discount what would be better is to ask the seller for one if you buy say 3 and have a few friends go in on it.

I love this site and I love saving money, but some things its just easier to buy and by the way it costs about 2.75 for each auto air freshener to make and then the person has to pay for the booth. I go to festivals and sell my wares, and by the time I come home I paid for the day. A lot of us do it because we like to.

    bambi

I found some templates at a craft site they were hard like cardboard, but were made of some type of white paper bound together and you then put your own scent on them. I just wish I could remember where it was I ordered from.

I simply take a fabric softener sheet and attach it to a vent in the car. My car always stays fresh smelling! Even my trucker husband does the same thing in his truck!
