What Happens If You Get Into An Accident With A Turo Car

How Does Turo Rent A Car App Work Cory Turner Talks Cars

If a guest gets into an accident while on a trip in your vehicle, we believe your insurance would not be affected as long as youve chosen a protection plan made available via Turo. In addition, we offer protection plans that will reimburse you in the event there is physical damage to your car during a trip.

Downsides Of Turo Car Rentals

It’s not all good news.

While we’ve only had great experiences with Turo rentals, there are definitely some risks with renting through the car-sharing platform.

For starters, just how clean your car is and whether it’s in as good of shape as the photos make it seem can vary wildly. Be sure to read the reviews thoroughly, and only rent from highly rated owners or all-star hosts.

Finally, there’s always a risk that an owner will back out of your rental at the last minute, refunding your money but leaving you car-less. While you’ve got some recourse if National or Hertz do this to you, the options can be far more limited with a Turo car rental.

Once again, check out the reviews on any car you’re looking at: Late cancellations from the host will show up, perhaps warding you off from a reservation that’s more likely to get canceled.

Responding To Trip Requests And Changes

You will receive a notification via text, email, and/or the app when a guest requests to book a trip or to change a trip theyve already booked with you.

Hosts have between 30 minutes and 8 hours to respond to rental requests.

For Book instantly, the system will automatically accept booking requests for you.

If approved, it goes into their schedule, and the car becomes unavailable for the rental period.

What Happens If Turo Host Doesnt Show Up

Turo or the host will cancel guest no-show trips, and well issue the guest a partial refund. For no-show trips that are longer than two days, well refund the guest their trip price and trip fee minus the average of two days cost, the protection plan, any Extras, any young driver fee, and half of any delivery fee.

What Is A Turo Auto Insurance Score

Best Turo App

One way Turo evaluates the reliability of potential guests is by looking at your insurance score, also called your . This number is used by auto and home insurers to evaluate the strength of your credit and is based on your credit history.

The auto insurance score criteria include things like how much debt you have and whether you pay your bills on time. Turo doesn’t create the auto insurance score directly. The number is created by TransUnion, a credit reporting agency.

Unfortunately, if you have a low insurance score, you may not be eligible to rent a car from Turo, even though the score is not tied to your driving ability.

How Turo Insurance Works For Guests

People who are renting a car on Turo need insurance, too. You’re not necessarily obligated to buy coverage from Turo, but you should understand what you get when buying protection from Turo and the trade-offs of foregoing coverage.

Turo offers three packages of insurance coverage for drivers: Minimum, Standard and Premier.

  • Minimum coverage includes the state minimum for liability coverage in the state you’re renting and a $3,000 deductible if the car is damaged or stolen.
  • Standard coverage includes the state minimum for liability coverage and lowers the damage deductible to $500.
  • Premier coverage raises the liability protection to $1 million and removes the deductible for damage entirely.

You may also choose to “decline” insurance, though this is a bit of a misnomer: You still receive the state minimum of liability protection, as it’d be illegal to drive without it. However, by choosing the “decline” option, you are completely responsible for the cost to repair or replace the car if it’s damaged, lost or stolen. The Premier option is not available if the vehicle is worth more than $25,000.

With all three options, you will be responsible for mechanical damage as well as damage to the inside of the vehicle.

Unlike a car insurance plan for a normal car, Turo’s insurance doesn’t include any extras like personal injury protection or uninsured motorist coverage, except in the states where it’s required by law.

Im one of those people that always thinks the grass is greener on the other side. Thats why, even after FINALLY figuring out a rental car strategy for my travels, I had to check out the new player in town. Turo car rental is a peer-to-peer car rental service essentially Airbnb for cars.

I took the plunge on my recent trip to Orange Beach to try it out, primarily out of curiosity. Most of the Turo car rental reviews Ive seen were overviews of the service, not real-life experiences. It didnt hurt that I was able to stack a $25 Turo promo code for new users with a $45 Amex offer, bringing my price down considerably!

Automating Turo Drop Offs

I did some research and put together a plan of attack to automate the drop off process at the start of each trip.

I found and a great remote car tracking device called Automatic. With these two tools in tandem, I gave myself much more flexibility on the car delivery to renters and some security to monitor the car remotely.

5 Things You Should Know BEFORE You Rent on TURO!

Do you know the expression “planes, trains, and automobiles?” Sometimes it feels like you come across all of them when planning your travels. Today, we’re going to be focusing on the automobile part of it.

In many places, it’s easiest to get around by car. One of the only options in the last decade was to rent through a traditional car rental agency, like Enterprise or Budget rentals. Those who have rented cars from these agencies will know that you almost never know which car you’ll be getting. Plus, many rental agencies are known for charging hefty hidden fees.

In comes Turo, a peer-to-peer car rental platform that connects local car owners with renters without the hassles of dealing with an agency. But is Turo legit, and are they worth using for travelers looking for car rentals?

Read on for our review about what it is, how it works, the cost, and if it’s worth it!

How To Work With A Commercial Host

Some cars on Turo are owned by small car-rental companies, rather than people operating on their own. The primary difference for guests is that these companies use their own commercial car insurance policies, and you won’t be able to buy any of the coverage options from Turo listed above.

If you’re concerned about a certain host’s reliability, check their reviews first. The more positive ratings a host has from other drivers, the more likely they’ll be a responsible host, no matter the situation.

Some commercial hosts include the insurance rates as part of the daily rate, while others provide a separate charge. Whether car insurance is charged separately will be detailed in the body of the rental agreement check with your host if you’re unsure how you are covered. You’ll also work directly with your host if anything goes wrong with your vehicle during your rental, rather than making a claim through Turo’s insurance.

Turo Officials Say ‘your Personal Insurance Is Not Going To Be Affected’ By The App

Car-sharing app Turo is coming to Newfoundland and Labrador ahead of the potential influx of tourists for Come Home Year this summer, but there are still big questions about the use of the app in the province.

The app is similar to Airbnb but for cars, allowing car owners to put up their own personal vehicle for rent. The service has been up and running in other provinces since 2016.

Provincial government officials tout the app as a solution to the car rental shortages that have plagued the province’s tourism industry in recent years. But how does it work? And what about insurance?

“Every car has to go through a safety inspection to be listed on the platform,” said Cedric Mathieu, Turo’s vice-president and head of Canadian operations.

“Cars need to be less than 12 years old. They need to have less than 200,000 kilometres on the odometer and be in good mechanical condition.”

Mathieu said car owners can download the app, list their vehicle and set how much they want to charge. As for insurance, Turo is partnered with Economical to be the acting insurance provider while the vehicle is rented.

“Whatever happens during a Turo trip will really be covered by the Turo-provided insurance,” said Mathieu.

“And your personal insurance is not going to be affected by anything happening on Turo.”

“A personal auto insurance policy doesn’t normally provide coverage if the vehicle is rented out,” the spokesperson said.

Is Turo Legit? Renting Your Car On Turo

As I drove around in the Benz, I noticed a nauseating smell of cigarettes in the car. Reading Turo’s smoking policy, I learned I was on the hook for it because I did not immediately file a report.

Turo tells guests not to check in to a reservation if they smell cigarette smoke upon picking up a car and instead to call customer service. A representative will then cancel the trip and arrange a replacement car.

Fortunately, my host accepted the car back with the smoke odor, but he technically could have charged $50 for odor removal.

This was far cheaper than any other car rental available in San Francisco.

How Turo Payments Work

You can pay for your Turo ride in a variety of ways.

They accept most major credit cards like Visa, American Express, MasterCard, and Discover.

You can also use your debit card, Google Wallet, or Apple Pay.

Hosts are paid for rentals through either Stripe or PayPal, depending on their location and preference.

These payments will go through after the rental period and are tracked in the Turo app or on the Earnings tab on the website.

Turo takes a percent cut of rental payments, depending on which Turo Protection Plan you choose.

There are three options, all of which include liability coverage:

  • Basic: 15% of your rental fee
  • Standard: 25% of your rental fee
  • Premium: 35% of your rental fee

To become a commercial host, you must choose the “owner-provided insurance” option, which means that you will be considered an independent car rental company and to buy commercial rental auto insurance. The Turo app will identify the commercial host as the insurance provider on all cars listed.

Turo requires its commercial hosts to retain commercial rental insurance to cover themselves, their guests and their cars. Here are the standard commercial rental auto insurance products:

  • General liability coverage, which protects against claims

  • Commercial property insurance, which protects your auto

  • Business interruption insurance, which covers lost income

  • Excess liability insurance, which increases your liability limits

Benefits Of Renting Your Car On Turo

How does Turo Car Rental Work [2022]

As I mentioned, as our listings gain more reviews in the next few months, I can see this easily going from a breakeven side hustle to profitable one.

Still, its exciting to use a new platform like Turo to subsidize and ultimately profit on the costs of our vehicles.

If your car is anything like ours, it probably sits idle a good chunk of the time, depreciating by the day. Turo presents an opportunity to turn that otherwise idle time into cash.

I also like having the flexibility in when, how, and for how much we list our cars for rent. If you know youre going to need your car, just block off those dates on the booking calendar.

Overall, we are so happy with our Turo experience and see it as a great side hustle for those who love cars but dont get too attached .

With a little creativity and marketing effort, we now have three cars earning their keep.
