    Has Anybody Removed A Lojack

I’m working on a car that I recently bought as detailed in This Thread.Upon putting the interior back in, I came across a little black box that doesn’t look like it belongs there. I Googled the FCC ID and it appears to be a LoJack transmitter. I had no idea it was there and I seriously doubt the previous owner did, either. I called LoJack to see if I can disconnect it without causing any problems, and they were completely and totally worthless. The ONLY way they would tell me anything is if I pay $99 to activate the system AND pay for a technician to inspect it. All I want to know is if I can yank the thing out. There is only one pair of wires going to it, and then it also has a backup battery attached. Are they hardwired into any of the car’s systems? Or can I clip the wires without screwing anything up?

The pair of wires is probably just power. Lo-Jack is a self-contained unit IIRC and it doesn’t need anything but power from the vehicle. A quick test with a DVM would tell you if there’s +12V on those leads.

See Car Location History With Gps Logging

GPS Logging is a great feature of a tracking device that records or logs a cars driving location history including location, time, speed, and other data of the car at regular intervals, and stores it in its internal memory.

GPS Loggers are different from real-time GPS Trackers in that they do not transmit or receive the data via cellular signals. Think of it as a GPS Tracker that operates in stealth mode.

The data is saved to the device itself instead of being transmitted live . You can retrieve the logged data for review from your computer or mobile app.

Most GPS loggers make you retrieve the device and plug it into your computer to download the data.

There are very few that automatically upload the data when in range of your home Wi-Fi. For example, when your car pulls in the driveway, so there is no need to take it out of your car and then put it back later. Trakkit GPS does this.

Furthermore, since the data is not being transmitted live over the cellular network, there is no monthly service fee for the transmission of data.

Are New Cars Required To Have A Gps Tracking System

New cars are not required to have GPS trackers, as it is not required by law. You can choose to disable, block, or remove it as you so desire.

However, it is not recommended to remove it, as it serves as a quality safety system for monitoring your car remotely.

If you live in areas with a high rate of car theft, a GPS tracking system is an added benefit, because it becomes really difficult to steal a car that has a working GPS system.

Where To Look For A Hidden Gps Tracker: Interior

LoJack for your MacBook Review Just like LoJack for your car

Since hidden GPS trackers can be small, they can be tucked away anywhere inside a car or truck. You’ll want to focus on places where such a device could be hidden quickly, but that won’t always do the trick.

While the most discreet trackers are battery-powered, simpler units are designed to plug directly into a vehicle’s data connector. If you can locate the data connector, which is usually found under the dash near the driver’s legs, and it has something plugged into it, that’s a reason for concern.

If you don’t notice anything that obvious, use your flashlight and mirror to check under the seats, under and behind the dash, inside and behind the glove compartment, and in the center console. Trackers can also be hidden in seat pockets, between seats, behind sun visors, and elsewhere.

One of the difficulties involved in locating a hidden GPS tracker inside a car is that it may blend in with other components. For instance, small modules like the one that runs the power door locks may easily be confused for something more nefarious.

In cases where someone is determined to have their surveillance device go undetected, they may hide a tracker inside a seat cushion, behind a door panel, and in other out-of-the-way locations.

These devices can also be hidden in a trunk. If you have a spare tire, remove and inspect it. At that time, you can also peel back the trunk liner, which can easily hide a small GPS tracking device.
