So buckle up, and lets get down to business.

How Does Rust Occur On Classic Cars?

In scientific terms, rusting is the chemical process of surface molecules reacting with oxygen in the air and producing new molecules, called Fe2O3, which are known as iron oxides. Rusting is a natural process for cars if you leave the cars iron cover to the elements, it will eventually reduce to iron oxide.

Classic cars that were produced during the 50s, 60s, and 70s were more poorly made and many of them began to show rusting signs as soon as they came off the assembly line. If left untreated, the main sheet panel can completely rust in a matter of years. Its easier to repair rust when you notice the first few signs appear, rather than having to re-do the entire car.

Rust Repair Or Is It Too Late

IronX – Remove rust from you car’s paint

Rust is a recurring issue for car owners, but how much rust is too much rust? How do you know if its too late for car rust repair? And if youre shopping for a used car, should rust be considered a deal-breaker?

Rust generally falls under one of two categories: surface rust or scale rust .

    • Surface rust is superficial but repairable! It affects the metal surface on a microscopic scale, going only a few microns deep. Typically, surface rust can form after a paint chip or scratch has left the metal exposed to the elements for an extended period of time. How fast surface rust progresses to scale rust depends on temperature, humidity, and precipitation.
    • Scale rust is a natural progression of surface rust. As oxidation works its way deeper, it accelerates, flaking off bits of the converted metal. At first, this will cause pitting, and then paint will eventually start to bubble and flake off. Over time, scale rust eats holes through body panels, frame rails, and chassis components, affecting your vehicles structural integrity.

    Repair Small Surface Rust Areas

Surface rust areas require sanding out the rust stain and recoating the surface with paint. Heres how to get the job done:

  • Prepare the Area: Prep your workspace. Tape plastic sheeting over your vehicle, leaving a gap the size of the treatment area with a few inches on all sides.
  • Don Safety Gear: Put on your protective eyewear, gloves and dust mask.
  • Clean the Surface: Use wax and grease remover to clean the area that you are about to sand. If you dont clean the area prior to sanding, then the sanding process can contaminate the metal.
  • Sand Away the Rust: Use sandpaper or a small grinding disc to sand out the rust spot, including the paint directly around the rust area. Keep going until all the rust has been completely sanded out and you see the shiny metal base.
  • Clean the Surface Again: Clean the area with wax and grease remover to ready it for primer and paint.
  • Wipe off Dust: Use a lint-free cloth or tack cloth to wipe away any dust from the surface.
  • Apply Zero-Rust or Other Automotive Primer and Paint: If you use a rust-prevention paint like Zero Rust, you dont need a separate primer. It should dry to the touch in 30 minutes, depending on temperature and humidity. Apply a second coat if needed after the first dries. Once your primer or Zero Rust dries, scuff it, clean it and then apply your topcoat of automotive paint.
  • Buff the Finish: Buff the treated area with a microfiber cloth or a lint-free cloth.
