Dont Spend A Fortune Installing Charging For Your New Electric Car

Earlier, I wrote a guide to help you , particularly with the Tesla Model 3. After you get your car, you want to install home charging for it where you park it If you cant install any charging at all, because you park on the street or in an apartment parking garage, then you face a challenge. If you can charge at your office thats great, though not without other issues. If you cant do either, I dont currently recommend purchase of an electric car, at least for now.
If you have newer service, fear not, you dont need to change the panel, and you can just add a new circuit. If the wire is not that long, getting that plug may not cost that much. Sadly, many see a more expensive estimate. How can you get away from it? The answer is that while its nice to have enough power to recharge a car from zero to full in one night, you dont actually need nearly that much.

The SAE J1772 charging plug is as inelegant as its name. And the five ports that connect to your car might seem complicated, but they’re actually pretty straightforward.
1 AC power, just like the power plug for your TV.
2 Proximity detection. This is simply a mechanical switch that makes sure you’re plugged in all the way.
3 Ground wire.

How To Avoid Paying For Electrical Work You Dont Need
- Bundled charger + installation price? Be suspicious. If you already have a 200-amp panel and it has enough space, getting an extra 240 outlet installed is typically one of the simpler jobs an electrician will ever do. Dont necessarily accept a bundled rate for the charger + installation. Get a free quote from an electrician you trust and shop around. Make sure they understand exactly what kind of work you need.
- Beware unnecessary permits. Level 2 chargers can be hardwired to your panel or simply plugged in to a 240V outlet. The Permit for hardwiring can be more expensive and complicated. Hardwiring is typically only required for outdoor charger installation. Indoors, its ideal to just plug in your charger. Choose a charger with a wall plug option if youre going to be charging indoors.
- Does that quote include permits? Some installers cover permit costs, some dont. Make sure quotes include any permit costs for an apples-to-apples comparison. Also know whether theyre going to handle the permitting process for you or not.

How To Use A Car Battery To Power A Guitar Amp

All you really need is to convert the DC power from your vehicle into AC, which is the kind that comes from your wall. Most car batteries are strong enough to power a 50- or even a 100-watt amplifier, though you will drain your car battery after a bit.
How To Hook Up A Car Amp Inside The House To A Wall Outlet
If you’ve got a car amplifier you’d like to use in your home, there’s one major obstacle to overcome: how to power the amplifier. Wall outlets provide 110-volt AC power, but amplifiers require 12-volt DC power. You’ll have to do a little extra wiring, but the problem is not insurmountable.
Look up the input power specifications for your amplifier, using the manual or the manufacturer’s website. Find the specification for current draw in amperes.
Purchase an AC to DC power inverter. Make sure the inverter can produce a 12-volt DC output at the specified amperage rating.
Cut a length of 10-gauge red wire, a length of 10-gauge black wire and a length of 16-gauge wire, each long enough to reach from the amplifier to the inverter. Remove 1/2 inch of insulation from each end of the wires with your wire strippers.
Loosen the power terminals of the amplifier, marked “+” and “-“, with a screwdriver. Loosen the REM terminal of the amplifier with a screwdriver.
Slide the ends of your wires into the loosened terminals and tighten down to clamp the wires. Insert the red wire into the “+” terminal, the black wire into the “-” terminal and the 16-gauge wire into the REM terminal.
Loosen the terminals of the inverter. The method and tool will vary by brand. Slide the black wire into the “-” terminal and tighten. Twist together the ends of the red wire and the 16-gauge wire, slide them into the “+” terminal and tighten.

How To Choose The Right Power Supply Unit For Your Amp
An AC to DC power supply units can be bought either online or from an electrical store. However, you need to check a few things before buying the power supply.
Choosing the right power supply unit for your amplifier depends greatly on how much electrical current your amp will draw, and on whether youre going to push the amp hard or push it softly.
Thats the reason why the power supply must produce at least 12-volt DC, and that its amperage rating matches the specified rating of the amp.
Essentially, there are 2 basic ways to go about choosing a power supply for a car amp:
Getting The Right Components
Since most car amps dont come with any wires or cables, youll typically have to buy the necessary components yourself, either separately or as part of an amp install kit. If you go the former route, then you should start out by checking your manual to see what gauge power and ground cables your amp requires.
You can also take measurements to see how long a run there is between your battery and the location where youll be installing your amp. While youre at it, you can check the distance between that location and your head unit to see how long your remote turn-on wire needs to be. Finally, you can determine whether you need traditional speaker wires or RCA cables by looking at whether your head unit has line-level RCA outputs. If it doesnt, then youll just be using speaker cables to hook into your ampprovided it has speaker-level inputs.
After youve put together a list of all the cables and wires that you need to complete your installation, you have to go through the actual process of finding and buying them. Power cables and speaker wires are typically available in bulk, although you can usually buy power cables that are cut to the specific lengths that you need. RCA cables are also available in a variety of lengths, although you should try to keep them as short as possible so as to avoid tangles and kinks.

What About The High End
This advice is for those with a 100 amp service in their house. If you have larger service, like 200 amps, there is no reason not to install a nice circuit to a 50 amp plug, known as the 14-50 plug the same one big RVs use. You cant use all of it, but you might buy a bigger electric car in the future, and you might even buy two electric cars, and wish you could get 60 or more amps. Price out getting bigger wire than you need, it may only add a modest amount to the price of your install. Tesla Wall Connectors have a nice feature which allows them to daisy chain and share the power between two of them when you have two Teslas.
Even if you go for one of the cheaper plugs described, like the 6-20, you should run thicker wire to it able to handle 30, 40 or 50 amps. Price it out. If you do, and later you do upgrade your house service, you wont need to rewire that circuit to get that maximum power.
Of course, there can be other reasons to increase the service on your house. Its a bit safer, and can offer room for other expansion you might do in the future, such as more cars, air conditioning, a hot tub and other things. All those reasons might justify the upgrade the main point of this article was to examine when the car alone doesnt need it.
Setting The Gain And Bass Adjustments
The problem with having sound adjustments on both the stereo;and the amplifier is that settings can be all over the place and one can affect how the other produces sound to your subwoofer.
I recommend doing the following:
Most well-designed amps like the popular Alpine MRV-F300 feature flexible crossover controls you should use. With them, you can get clean, low-distortion music power at high volume. Surprisingly very few people use these features to their potential!
Play some music youre very familiar with and that you know should have good bass sound at a moderate level. Then with a small screwdriver or screwdriver bit that fits adjust the gain until bass performance is at the level you enjoy.
Dont forget that when an SUV hatch or car trunk is closed the sound will be changed somewhat as opposed to when the door, trunk, and/or rear hatch are closed.
In case the stereo has insufficient bass or your system still doesnt sound quite right, try using the bass boost on your amp if available.
A bass boost typically works boosting bass response around a fixed or adjustable frequency near 50Hz for example. These can sometimes add some extra thump and bass extension to your audio system.

How To Connect A Smartphone Or Other Device To A Car Amp
Be aware that headphone jacks can be a good or bad audio source depending on your particular device. Even though theyre usually not quite as good as RCA outputs/AUX output jacks, Ive had pretty good experiences doing using this with brand name smartphones or tablets.
In fact, I use this method to test a car amp at home.
You also use an affordably-priced Bluetooth receiver for around $25 from places like Amazon. They offer a direct line output jack or RCA jacks for this very reason.
Be sure to get a decent brand as the generic/no-name brand models tend to have sound quality problems and can produce odd noises between music tracks playing on your phone, for example.
Charging At Slower Level Two
A Level Two circuit runs at twice the voltage and usually at higher current. In fact, you can install these able to do up to 80 amps. For most people though, you dont need nearly that much. You will be very happy with enough to restore about 60% of your battery, because your typical daily cycle should run from 20% to 80% full. On a 240 mile Tesla Model 3, you can get that in 8 hours with just 5 kw, which is what you get from a 30 amp plug, the same one that runs your dryer. Such a circuit is going to fully restore you on almost any day you drive, particularly if you have more than 8 hours at home. You really dont need it faster. The regular range Tesla cant take more than 32 amps in any event but you just dont need even that. If you can get it, of course you should take it, but you should not spend thousands to get that extra boost.
Your electrician might tell you you need a new panel for a 50 amp plug, but that you can put in a 30 amp or 20 amp without a new panel which can save you a fortune.
If you have a truly dedicated plug then in many cases an electrician can, for not much money, replace a regular 120v socket with a 240v stocket for twice the charging rate, changing the plug and breaker as long as the wiring is rated for the higher voltage. Ask about that it can almost surely fit your panels load maximum.
