Which Electric Car Has The Longest Range

Don't Miss

Ford Mustang Mach E Extended Range Rwd: 370 Miles

Tesla Breaks The Record Of Longest-Range Electric Vehicle

Some may say that the Mustang Mach-E is a Mustang in name alone its an SUV, and wont be able to muster the V8 growl for which the car has become known during its nearly 60-year history.

However, Fords electric pony car has proven as fun and lively to drive as it is practical, and the ability to do 370 miles between changes in the extended-range model is notably useful for long-distance drives. And with the entry-level model costing a whisper over £40,000, its a surprisingly affordable prospect although its no longer eligible for the governments revised Plug-in Car Grant.

What Is The Average Range Of An Electric Car

According to data fromNimbleFins, the average range of an electric car is 193 miles. The models with the longest range are usually the more expensive, luxury models. For example, prices for the Mercedes EQS start from £99,995 and the standard Tesla Model S costs £95,980.

The table below shows the difference in range between luxury and non-luxury cars and the seasonal range changes. You may find that your electric car has a shorter range in winter vs summer. This is because batteries produce less current in cold weather and are less effective as a result. This increases the recharging frequency.

How To Increase An Electric Cars Range

Sometimes you dont always have time to charge for your next trip, or you cant find a charging station nearby. Thankfully, there are a few things that you can do behind the wheel to ensure you get to where you need to be.

  • Accelerate smoothly and drive to the conditions
  • Try to stick to roads that are easier to navigate
  • Take advantage of regenerative braking
  • Be conservative with air conditioning and heating
  • Regularly check your tyres and only inflate to standards
  • Travel light by keeping weight inside to a minimum
  • Time your battery charge and avoid overcharging

    Tesla Model S 379 Miles

Its no surprise the Tesla Model S tops this list, really. Its continuously set benchmarks for electric cars and the latest version is no exception. Opt for the Long Range battery version and Tesla says itll do 379 miles between charges and if that isnt enough for you, youll be able to access its rapid-charging Supercharger network to quickly get the miles back in the battery on cross-country trips.

With a battery upgrade the Model X springs up these rankings to sit alongside its stablemates. The X is big, fast, expensive and overly complicated, but with the exception of the smaller Model Y, there simply isnt another seven-seat SUV out there thats powered by electricity let alone one that can travel this far between charges. Throw in access to that Supercharger network, and its easy to see why you might be tempted.

Over the past decade, battery technology has advanced rapidly enough that the longest range electric cars now top 400 miles on a single charge, while 250 miles is considered a baseline for many more.

Commutes for most Americans only cover around 30-40 miles per day, something that many mid-priced EVs will take care of without needing to charge until the end of the work week.

Which Electric Cars Can Travel The Furthest Between Charges We Reveal The Top 10 Electric Cars With The Longest Range

One of the first questions people often ask when researching buying an electric car is, how far will it travel between charges?. If youre only pootling around the city or popping to the shops, you probably dont need an electric car that covers huge distances off a single charge. But if youre thinking about swapping your petrol or diesel car and plan to travel further afield, an electric cars range is one of its most important features.

The amount of miles an electric car can manage on a single charge is primarily dictated by both its battery size and the car’s weight. Generally speaking, small EVs can’t travel the same distance as larger ones because there is not the space for such a big battery within the car’s floor. That’s not always the case, though, as some smaller electric cars are able to maximise efficiency with great aerodynamics and a high-tech energy management system.

It’s also important to note that, unlike most petrol or diesel cars, an EV is actually less efficient at a constant motorway speed than it is in stop/start town traffic. That’s because it’s unable to recuperate energy through braking and coasting, which in turn charges the batteries. For example, an EV with a claimed range of 200 miles will probably only manage 150 on the motorway, unless you’re willing to spend your journey drafting lorries.

Polestar 2 Long Range: 336 Miles

Volvos former racing offshoot has now turned its attention to EVs, and its starting to make a name for itself for all the right reasons too. Leading the way is the Polestar 2, with the entry-level standard range single motor version offering a 64kWh battery capable of up 275 miles of range, while the long range single motor features a bigger 78kWh unit that’ll do 336 miles on a full charge. Top of the performance tree is the long range dual motor, with the same 78kWh battery but reduced 299-mile range.

How Can I Make The Most Out Of My Single Charge Range

Top Electric Vehicles with the Longest Range in 2022

The range you get from a single charge depends on your driving style, the driving conditions and what you have running in your car on the journey. For example, if you are using air conditioning, heated seats and de-fogging windows, your range will be less than if all these are turned off. The weather conditions can also determine your drive, with the car requiring more power on cold winter mornings.

How Ev Mile Range Is Determined

Estimated range for electric vehicles is determined through a testing of energy efficiency from one of several certified organizations. In the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency is tasked with calculating the operating range on a single charge before an EV goes to market.

The energy consumption of a given EV is determined in a lab using standardized procedures mandated by federal law.

That is contrary to the notion that vehicles are tested on open roads or tracks. Each vehicle is in fact tested on a treadmill-like device called a dynamometer. The EV never actually moves, just the rollers beneath its wheels do.

Each EV is tested after sitting overnight with a fully charged battery. A professional driver then cycles through city or highway driving conditions until the battery becomes is exhausted.

The dead battery is then fully recharged so a technician can determine the EVs energy consumption. This is done by taking the kilowatt-hours of energy needed to recharge the battery, and dividing it by the number of miles driven on the dynamometer.

    Tesla Model Y Long Range

The second Tesla on our list cant quite match its sibling for the crown of longest range electric car, but it runs it rather close while delivering a lot more practicality than the Model 3. With 326 miles of EPA range and highway tests that put it in the high 200s, the Model Y covers a lot of distance and adds roughly 3x more storage capacity than the 3.

Beyond that, the ride height and uninterrupted panoramic roof add a feeling of extra space in the Model Y, where the 3 feels less roomy as more riders occupy the rear seats. The Y can even squeeze an extra two seats into that additional rear section, although very small people and pets are the most likely candidates for those spaces.

The remaining features are right in line with the Model 3, as the two share a common platform and styling. Which Tesla you opt for will depend largely on how many people youre regularly hauling and how much practicality trumps performance in your everyday use. Even so, with a sub-five second 0-60 time and an upgrade that brings it down to 3.5 seconds, the Model Y is still a lightning-fast electric car with range to burn.
