Remove Badge With Floss

Using dental floss or fishing line, floss the area between the badge and the metal. The motion for this should be very similar to the one you use when you floss your teeth. You dont want to pull the floss towards yourself but simply saw back and forth from side to side. If the floss stops being able to move easily, get more hot water and repeat steps 1-2 before returning to step 3.

Tech Tip: If you can, soak the floss you intend to use in the adhesive remover. This gives it a little extra power and makes this step more efficient.

Can You Use Wd

If youre still proceeding with debadging and youve figured out that your cars emblems are attached with adhesive, you may wonder if you can use WD-40 to aide in the removal of the badges.

WD-40, a type of lubricant, isnt really handy for the debadging process. If anything, it would make the badge and the surface around it very slick and hard to work with. That doesnt mean your WD-40 is completely useless, though.

If you have any leftover residue from the adhesive after debadging, which is quite likely, then this lubricant makes cleanup a breeze. Youll be happy to have some WD-40 on-hand!

Another option you have besides taking the emblems off your car outright is blacking them out. With this method, you paint or spray over the emblem so others can no longer tell which brand manufactured your car.

A lot of drivers will use Plasti Dip, a spray-on product that dries like rubber. Others say its better to get the badges powder-coated by a professional.

If you decide to go the DIY route with Plasti Dip, here are the steps to take.

Step 1: Start with a clean surface. Wash your car and the emblem especially, as you risk contamination otherwise.

Step 2: Next, use a glass cleaner on the car around the badge. This prevents contaminants and silicones from settling on the surface of your vehicle, which allows the Plasti Dip to work more effectively.

Step 3: Mask your Plasti Dip, especially around your emblems perimeter. This is where you want to work.

Step 4: Apply the Plasti Dip, starting with one coat. Wait five minutes for it to dry and then see how everything looks. More than likely, you will have to spray another four or five layers, letting each dry for five minutes in between or about 30 minutes overall.

As you spray, focus on all the angles of the cars badge. This way, everything dries evenly.

Step 5: Next, you can unmask that perimeter you had made before. If the Plasti Dip got anywhere else you didnt want it, after 30 minutes, it should be dry enough that you can peel it away.

Soften Up The Adhesive

Once youve determined how your cars badges were attached, it is now time to start the removal process. It is easier to remove adhesive that has already been warmed up. To do this, get some steaming water dont use boiling water as this may damage the cars paint and apply it directly above the emblems. If you have one available, use a thermos to hold the water. This isnt necessary, but it will help keep a constant temperature. It will also give you more freedom in handling the steaming water.

Pouring from above lets the hot water make direct contact with some of the adhesive, around the part where youll start prying the badge off. This will also warm up the rest of the glue to make it less sticky. Be careful when youre working with hot water, as you might end up burning yourself. Wear some protective equipment if you can. This is an optional step, but using an adhesive remover will also help soften the glue used to attach the badges to your cars body. Adhesive remover can also be used later to remove any leftover residue. You could also use a hair dryer to heat up the adhesive.

If you’re replacing individual letters, make guidelines on the top and bottom of the badge, and then in between each letter. With your stencil in place, you can now start removing the existing badge. … Now, all you need to do is get some fishing line or strong dental floss to cut the badge away from the adhesive.

Have A Strategy To Debadge

You need to start off by assessing the situation. It might be self-explanatory, but you need to think through how many badges you want to remove. Some cars may be designed to have each letter of their name applied as a separate piece, so be aware of that possibility.

While most modern badges are attached with adhesive, some may be bolted on through holes the body. Even though that is a rarity, if you can easily access the backside of the body panel where each badge is attached to, quickly check for rivets or bolts holding it in place.

Debadging A Car With Wd

There are two things that you will need to debadge a car with WD-40

A hairdryer is used to speed up the process by heating the badges.

A floss to pluck the badges or letters off. But with less pressure just to make sure you dont leave dents or marks on the car.

The WD-40 is then used to finalize the procedure by spraying it on the car and then rubbing it off gently so that you dont damage the paint.

To be safe, you should wash the car to get any WD-40 remnants off the car paint once you are done.

How To Properly Debadge A Vehicle

This article has been on my to do list for a while now and I finally got a car to go through the process and take some photos. I also got a bit lucky because this badge removal showed both the good and the bad you can end up with when going through the process. Its basically a lot of step by step photos with brief descriptions and any advice I have for that step.

To begin, I used the following tools and products:

• Meguiars Polishes

Badge to be removed on my daily driver/winter beater 95 BMW 525i

I started the process by thoroughly cleaning the area around the badge, first with a rinseless wash process, then a simple wipe down using ONR and a microfiber towel

After the area is thoroughly cleaned, you want to heat up the badge enough for it to start moving a bit when you push on it. This means the adhesive in the back is starting to give and you can start the debadging process. Just a heads up, a regular hair dryer will work wonders here, especially for those who never used a heat gun because not only will the hair dryer do the job just fine, but you wont risk badly burning the paint, the badge, or your hands with improper use of a heat gun. With a good heat gun, it usually takes only 10 seconds or less to warm up the adhesive enough and start removing.

Once warmed up, I like to start pulling off the badge using a plastic razor blade by inserting it level with the paint and starting to cut through the adhesive in the back
