You’re Not Following The Car Seat’s Weight And Height Guidelines

So where do you start? First, you need to pick the right car seat. How do you know whether you have the right car seat? It fits your child’s weight and length.

Hoffman said parents often miss length limits of car seats as kids usually outgrow seats by length before they outgrow them by weight. So make sure that you are looking at both measurements and that your child is within the seat’s parameters.

How Can I Tell If My Child Is Ready For A New Car Seat

According to Child Car Seats, there are a few simple yet effective checks to confirm if a child should be moved into a different seat.

When a child is ready to move from a rearward- to forward-facing child seat

If the baby is between six and 12 months old and is able to hold their head, and/or has grown to a point where their shoulders have passed the shoulder marks on the seat, then they are ready to move to a front-facing car seat.

Please note not all child car seats have these shoulder marks.

When a child is ready for a booster seat or forward-facing seat designed for older children

A child is ready to move from a rearward-facing child car seat to a forward-facing unit designed for older children when one following criterion is met:

  • The childs shoulders no longer fit comfortably in the seat
  • their eye level is higher than the back of the seat
  • the top insertion slots for the shoulder straps are below the level of the childs shoulders, or
  • their shoulder level has surpassed the seats shoulder marks.

When is my child ready to use a normal seatbelt?

A child is ready to use a normal seatbelt if they are seven years of age and 145cm tall, and at least one following criterion has been met:

  • The childs shoulders no longer fit comfortably in a booster seat
  • their eye level is higher than the back of the booster seat, or
  • their shoulder level has surpassed the seats shoulder marks.
  • Sit all the way back against the seat back
  • Sit with the sash belt across their mid-shoulder

    2. Next, run the seat belt through the seat belt path. The car seat will have arrows indicating where this is. You want to make sure the belt buckles, then you pull the shoulder portion of the belt while holding the base down with your hand to tighten it. It prevents the car seat from moving around during transport. You also want to check the tightness of the belt, as it should be one inch or less from the belt path. Is Your Newborn In Car Seat Correctly

Before beginning to secure your newborn in their car seat, youll want to make sure theyre not wearing anything too bulky.

Padded coats can prevent you from getting a tight enough fit with the straps, which could stop the seat from being able to do its job correctly in the event of a crash.

Here are some general steps to follow when securing your newborn into their car seat before heading home.

Again, it will be important to consult with the manual for their car seat to make sure there are no special instructions to follow specific to their car seat.

  • Make sure babys back and bottom are all the way against the car seat.
  • Move the harness straps over your childs shoulder. When rear-facing, the harness straps should come from right below their shoulders. You may need to adjust the straps (the manual for your specific car seat can give you instructions on how to do this. You will also want to ensure that the straps are not twisted.
  • Buckle the chest clip and the harness buckle, then tighten until theyre snug. To make sure the straps are tight enough, try to pinch the strap over your childs shoulder. If you can pinch any excess strap, youll need to tighten them a bit more.
  • Nothing should be in the car seat with your baby. Make sure there are no blankets near their face or anything that could harm them should they go flying in a crash.
  • Your babys car seats job is to protect them in the event of an accident.

    Happy travels!

Parents Are Too Quick To Transition

Milestones are exciting. She’s crawling! He’s walking!

But when it comes to car seats, “Don’t be in a hurry,” Hoffman said.

In general, the car seat transition goes like this: Ride in a rear-facing infant seat, then move to forward-facing convertible seat, next to a booster seat and finally to regular a seat belt. Make these transitions slowly.

“The one basic overarching principle is to delay transitions as long as possible because as you move from one stage to the other, you lose some relative protection,” Hoffman said.

Your Child Is Wearing A Heavy Coat In His Car Seat

Lack of tightness can also be a problem when securing the harness. That’s why it is recommended children don’t wear thick winter coats underneath the straps.

“What a big, bulky coat does is introduce slack and space,” Hoffman explained. If that were to all compress in a crash, “a child can slam into the harness and that can increase the risk for injury.”

If you pinch the harness straps over the shoulders once the child is buckled in, you shouldn’t be able to pinch any webbing between your fingers.

To keep children warm, place a coat or blanket over the secured harness.

A few other things to keep in mind when buckling up:

    • The chest clip should be at armpit level.
    • In rear-facing seats, the shoulder straps should be in the slots at or below the child’s shoulders.
    • In forward-facing seats, they should be at or above the childs shoulders.

How to install a rear facing car seat

Since kids’ bones and joints aren’t fully developed yet, they’re much more flexible than adults. Even though riding rear-facing longer may require them to cross or prop up their legs, these seating positions are no big deal to a flexible toddler and allow for crucial protection of the head, neck and spine.2

When rear-facing, a child’s head, neck and spine are all supported by the car seat during an accident.

Around weeks 37 to 39 of pregnancy is a good time, just in case baby decides to make their appearance a little earlier than expected.

If baby arrives any earlier than that, theres a chance they may have to spend some time in NICU, so youll have a chance to install your newborn car seat before they come home.

Which Type Of Dog Seat Belt Is Best

There are several dog car seat belt types. The most common are the harnesses, but there are also other types, such as the safety belt extenders or the car safety harness. Here is a detailed look.

    • Dog Seat Belt Harness. A seat belt is an excellent option for small to medium-sized dogs who like to jump. It makes attaching your pup to a car seatbelt much easier. They are similar to human safety belts but feature an adjustable strap system to perfectly fit your dogs collar. They can also be used as a walking harness during a stroll.
    • Seat Belt Extenders. If you have an older model car with a short middle seat belt, you may need a seat belt extender to help fit your dog into the back seat. These extenders can be secured to the existing seatbelt, so your pup doesnt have to share with other passengers.
    • Car Safety Harnesses. If you dont want your large breed dog bouncing around in the backseat while driving, consider investing in a dog car harness. This will help keep them safely secured while traveling at high speeds. This way, if you have an accident, it will not be able to fly out of its seat and hit the airbag. They are often subjected to crash tests by the center for pet safety for credibility.
