You can save yourself a couple of bucks by changing the oil in your car yourself. While all vehicles are a little different, adding oil is something anyone can do with a little eye for detail and a willingness to get dirty. Adding oil, however, is not a substitute for getting your oil changed.
Why Is There Oil Way Up The Dipstick
Oil all the way up the dipstick is normal when removing it initially after an engine shutdown. However, if the oil level is reading way up the stick, it suggests your engine crankcase is over full. It may not be oil though.
I often need to remove excessive oil from engines after the customers overfill them accidentally and its an easy mistake to make. If however, you didnt overfill the oil, the next most likely cause of the high dipstick reading is a coolant to an oil leak. A couple of ways this can happen are through a faulty oil cooler or a failed head gasket.
Check the coolant level, if its low or youve needed to top it up regularly its likely you found the problem. Oil coolers are plumbed to the coolant system and are used to help control oil temperature.
If the internal element ruptures coolant and oil will mix. Replacing the cooler will fix the problem, however, the coolant system and engine will need to be flushed.
A faulty head-gasket is the other likely cause, the gasket keeps the oil and coolant ports separate and any damage between these ports will allow the fluids to mix. To test for this condition, use a coolant system pressure tester and expect to hear pressure escape the crankcase via the dipstick.

Top Up Your Engine Oil
If your oil needs topping up, find the oil filler cap in your engine bay. This should have the word oil on it or an outline of an oil can.
- Take off the oil filler cap and carefully pour your oil in using a funnel.
- The difference between the min. and max. notches on a dipstick is about a litre of oil. So, if the level was on or below minimum when you checked it, youll need to pour in about 1l.
- If you don’t know how much you’ll need, add a little at a time.
- Wait a couple of minutes to let the oil run down into the bottom of the engine and then recheck the level on the dipstick.
- Putting too much oil into your car is just as bad as having too little. So make sure you dont overdo it.

How To Put Oil In A Car Engine
After you know where the oil cap is and the dipstick is then you are finally ready to put oil in your car. You simply need to remove the oil cap, put a funnel into the opening and slowly pour oil into the engine.
There are several things you need to know when filling the engine with oil.
Be sure that you don’t overfill the engine. If you are just topping off the engine then don’t put too much in at a time. Be sure to stop and check the oil often so you don’t overfill it.
Pour the oil into the funnel slowly. If you pour too fast the oil can leak out of the oil fill hole and get all over the engine. This usually causes it to leak down onto the exhaust manifold and burn off while you are stopped at a red light. This would smell extremely bad and possibly cause a fire!
Be sure to hold the funnel while you are pouring. Many times the funnel will not just stay where it is put and you could end up with oil all over the engine.
One of the best ways to put oil in a car without a funnel is to pour it with the oil bottle on its side. This will let the oil flow in more smoothly and minimize spillage.
Try to make sure the oil is warm before you pour it in. I usually keep the oil inside the house before I put it in the engine. This will help the oil flow out of the bottle and into the engine much easier. That’s all to it – Now you know where and how to put oil in a car.

It’s best not to add oil to a hot or running engine. Not only will the oil level be a little higher because it is hot, accidentally spilling oil onto a hot engine can cause smoking or even a fire. If you plan on topping up the oil, turn your car off and wait several minutes before you do anything else.
Again, topping up the oil is not a replacement for having a full-service oil change. Failing to change your oil can be pretty risky business, so youre always better off investing in regular, professional maintenance services.

First, you’ll want to lift the car high enough to give yourself room to work under it. Whether you use a hoist, ramps, or jack stands, make sure you are being absolutely safe. Never work under a car that is held up only by a floor jack. We raised our subject vehicle on the lift in the Car and Driver test garage, so you could see what we were doing. Most modern cars are fitted with a plastic undertray to both improve aerodynamics and protect vital components on the underside of the engine. In order to access the oil pan and oil filter on the TSX, the cover needs to be removed most undertrays are held on with a mixture of bolts, screws, or plastic clips that can be unfastened with basic hand tools. Before step two, be sure to examine the area for oil leaks. If any are found, consider having your vehicle inspected by a mechanic.

Adding too much oil can be a problem. First, confirm you’ve read the dipstick correctlythey can be hard to read. If the oil reads considerably over the full marklet’s say you added six quarts of oil to the car and then realized the manual called for fourunfortunately, the best thing to do is remove it. You could carefully drain the oil into a clean oil pan and carefully pour it back into the engine, or drain it all out and refill your car’s engine with new oil.
If there’s too much oil in the engine, it can foam. Foam significantly reduces the oil’s lubricating qualities. Remember, it should form a nice film that acts as a slippery barrier. Foamy oil doesn’t, and could cause serious engine wear. Foamy oil can show up as a light yellow foam on your dipstick.

Every dipstick has an indicator of the proper oil level. The indicator might come in the form of crosshatching, the letters L and H , or the words MIN and MAX.
