Further, Im going to distinguish between a tinkerer who happened to build something vaguely car-like and the founding of the first car company. To qualify, this needs to be a person or persons, ideally operating as some sort of legal entity, with commercial ambition. As Automobile Magazine explains, California-based Tim Mings is something of a Honda N600 expert. His shop, Merciless Mings, specializes in the tiny cars, and hes worked on more than he can remember. And in the mid-2000s, another came into his hands via an owner he got in touch with at a swap meet. Then, sometime in 2009, he got around to working on it. And it turned out to be VIN #10000001. It was the very first Honda N600 ever exported into the US, one of the first 50 prototypes.
Over a roughly 18-month period, Mings restored that 1967 car, which Honda christened Serial One. Being a prototype, it had a number of differences versus the production model. Its engine case and starter motor were sand-cast, not die-cast. The differential is different, as is the suspension and carburetor. Serial One also makes more power than the production Honda N600: 45 vs 36 hp.
But Honda had a good reason to drop the cars power: Automobile reports the engine wont really last beyond 22,000 miles. But, although the car currently resides in Hondas Ohio headquarters, it does still run when you turn the key.

When Were Cars Invented
The 1901 Mercedes, designed by Wilhelm Maybach for Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft, deserves credit for being the first modern motorcar in all essentials.
Its thirty-five-horsepower engine weighed only fourteen pounds per horsepower, and it achieved a top speed of fifty-three miles per hour. By 1909, with the most integrated automobile factory in Europe, Daimler employed some seventeen hundred workers to produce fewer than a thousand cars per year.
Nothing illustrates the superiority of European design better than the sharp contrast between this first Mercedes model and Ransom E. Olds 1901-1906 one-cylinder, three-horsepower, tiller-steered, curved-dash Oldsmobile, which was merely a motorized horse buggy. But the Olds sold for only $650, putting it within reach of middle-class Americans, and the 1904 Olds output of 5,508 units surpassed any car production previously accomplished.
The central problem of automotive technology over the first decade of the twentieth century would be reconciling the advanced design of the 1901 Mercedes with the moderate price and low operating expenses of the Olds. This would be overwhelmingly an American achievement.

It could be argued, of course, that an absurdly talented genius, known to his friends as Leo, beat Benz to designing the first automobile by several hundred years.

To be fair, though, Leonardo probably never got as far as building his idea for a prototype – it actually would have been nearly impossible with the tools available to him at the time – or riding around town on it. He even forgot to include seats.
And, when it comes to the most common modern automobiles we know of today, his automobile was missing something vital that Benzs could boast the first internal-combustion engine, and thus the first petrol car.
Mind you, the Automobile Club de France does still credit Cugnot as the creator of the first car ever. Tres French.
The First Mass Produced Car
The first practical cars featured gasoline/petrol-powered internal-combustion engines. These cars were built by numerous German inventors, with Karl Benzs invention being considered as the first practical car in the world. Benz replaced the horse of a horse-carriage with an engine that was able to run on fuel. The vehicle had three tires and had a front wheel that was smaller and lighter than the rear wheels in order to ensure that the car performed well in hilly terrain. Benz’s engine weighed about 220 pounds, was capable of generating about 0.75 horsepower, and was the most efficient engine at that time. His first car was built in Mannheim, Germany in 1885, and subsequently patented on January 29, 1886. Mass production of Benz’s car began in 1888 after a successful trip with his family from Mannheim to Pforzheim in August of that year.

Henry Fold And William Durant
In 1803, in Springfield, Massachusetts, bicycle technicians J. Frank and Charles Duryea built the first famous American gasoline car, which they raced and won in 1805. The following year, they sold the first American-made gasoline car they had built.
In 1809, 30 U.S. automakers built 1000 cars, and 445 more hit the market the following decade. Ford unveiled the Model T in 1908, and William Durant created General Motors the following year. For a high-priced consumer good, the new enterprises competed in a sellers market unlike any other.
Compared to the countries of Europe, the U.s had a much higher demand for automobile mobility because of its large geographical size and hinterland of small, isolated communities. While Cugnot invented the first car was in 1769, it was not an internal-combustion car. Rivaz invented the first internal combustion car forty years later.
Like Cugnot, François Isaac de Rivaz was born in France. But he later moved to Switzerland, where he was a politician. He also worked with steam engines, and began experimenting with a new engine type.
A steam engine is an external combustion engine. First, an external fire heats a fluid. Then, when the liquid expands into a gas, this pressure creates power.
Several inventors experimented with internal combustion engines. But internal combustion requires an explosion that creates enough expanding gas it can build pressure on its own. The only problem was finding a powerful fuel source.
Inventors experimented with many fuel sources. For example, Nicéphore Niépce built an internal combustion engine powered by a mixture of moss, coal-dust, and resin. It was powerful enough to propel a boat but never drove a car.
Isaac de Rivaz built an internal combustion engine powered by hydrogen gas in 1804. The powerplant was strong enough to propel the first internal combustion car in 1807.
