Wash Area With Soap And Water Again

Whats the Best Way to Remove Baked Old Tree Sap From Your Car

Immediately after you have removed all of the tree sap, you MUST wash the area with car soap and water. Any lingering solutions that contain alcohol can cause damage or discoloration to your cars paint or plastic over time.

Since you washed your car at the beginning, all of your supplies should be close by. Using car soap, water, and either a microfiber towel or a car mitt, rinse and clean the treated areas thoroughly. For extra measure, if you used an alcohol-based solution, repeat the washing process a few times.

After washing, dry the areas with a clean microfiber towel.

Washing Your Car With Soap And Hot Water

  • 1Wash your car as soon as possible. The longer tree sap or any substances like sap are left on the surface of the vehicle, the more difficult they are to remove. Acting fast will require the least amount of effort and the most success at getting a sparkling car exterior.
  • 2Spray off your car with clean water. Giving your car this initial rinse will get all the large debris off but it will also help you to see where you need to focus further cleaning.
  • Take the time to wash your whole car, even if it’s not all covered in sap. You will be more satisfied when you get the sap off if your whole car is nice and clean. Besides, you already have all the supplies out and ready to go.
  • 3Rub the surface with a microfiber rag covered in hot, soapy water. Use the hottest water you can, as the sap will be weakened most effectively by really hot water.
  • Before using other methods of sap removal, try cleaning your car with really hot water. If the sap gets removed, then great, you are done. If the sap remains, at least you have a clean surface on which to try other methods.
  • Be sure that your rag is clean and that you rinse it often to get any debris and sap out. Using a dirty rag will only spread this across the surface of your car.
  • 4Rinse the surface repeatedly. Rinsing the area you are cleaning will allow you to see if your job is done or if you need to use more elbow grease to get the sap removed.
  • How To Avoid Tree Sap

The easiest way to avoid having this happen to your vehicle is to avoid parking near or underneath trees whenever possible. That being said, thats nearly impossible at times. Thats why many drivers invest in a car or vehicle cover. Its important to remember that if you do invest in a car cover, you do not need to use it every time you park your vehicle. To limit any inconvenience to you, keep the car cover in your vehicle at all times so when you do have to park under those tall, sap-dripping pine trees, youre prepared to cover your vehicle. You may also want to invest in a few cleaning supplies to keep in your vehicle at all times just in case you do find sap on your vehicle. Well go into more detail below about what to keep in your car to help you clean off that pesky tree sap.

Pine needles are bulky, and your vacuum will perform better if you start with an empty chamber. You’ll also want to switch to the hose attachment, or use a handheld vac, so that the sticky needles won’t get stuck in a vacuum’s brush attachment.

That same advice about the hose attachment also applies to the vacuuming up of confetti, which may prove helpful to know come January 1!

How To Prevent Tree Sap From Damaging Your Car Or Truck Finish Again

Besides trying to avoid parking under trees, the best line of defense against sap, droppings, and all sorts of other potential contaminants that can stick to and damage your finish is a good protective wax or sealant.

If youre not familiar with the difference between waxes and sealants, the abbreviated explanation is that car wax doesnt last more than a couple weeks while the best sealants can last years. As mentioned previously, Im a big fan of Wolfgangs Deep Gloss Paint Sealant which should last 2 years.

You may even want to consider a ceramic coating. These coatings are a next-level type of sealant designed to protect better and last longer. There are basically two grades of ceramic coating consumer and professional. Consumer-grade is available for purchase direct to the consumer as it doesnt have too complex an application process. Professional-grade ceramic coatings usually require certification to qualify to purchase. Consumer grades typically dont last more than a couple of years, performing slightly better than good quality paint sealants. Professional ceramic coatings can last as long as 10 years.

The hydrophobic properties of wax, paint sealants, and ceramic coatings will help prevent sap and other road grime from getting a good hold on your clear coat. It will also make your car much easier to wash and keep clean.

Birds Do It Bats Do It

Easiest Way to Safely Remove Baked on Tree Sap

Now for our feathered friends and their penchant for garnishing vehicles with deposits of excrement or ‘poo’ by another name.

Like sap, many people have learnt the hard way if they don’t remove the bird poo quickly, it can lead to serious damage to the paint.

The reason this happens is that the white stuff is uric acid which, depending on what the bird has eaten, can etch right into the paint, sometimes within minutes.

Dan Bowden says: “The uric acid in bird poo is the culprit. Birds eat different things so the acid levels in the poo varies. Some poo can be left there for a period of time, while others even after 30 seconds, can start to etch into the paint.

“Like sap, the sooner you remove bird poo the better. If all you have at the time is water, splash it on to wash as much off as you can. Even placing a damp cloth over it is better than nothing, as it is important to try and keep the poo liquid”.

Bowden recommends keeping a bottle of detailing or car cleaning spray in the car as the cleaning properties within the spray help dilute the poo. A soft cloth, but not paper toweling, is also a good idea to have on board. These materials will make your job a whole lot easier.

Some of it can be pretty stubborn to remove, especially on a hot day and on a hot surface, or if it has been left there for a while.

Prolonged exposure to the uric acid causes the etching and the only way to fix it is by a professional detailer, as there are no off-the-shelf products to do that.

Tree pitch, sap, or tar is very difficult to remove from your hands, clothes, and most of all, from the paint on your car. This stuff is a nuisance. To break down hardened tree sap or insect droppings youll want something that can penetrate into the hardened contaminant and dissolve it. Bug and tar remover comes to mind for many but it usually isnt powerful enough. Rubbing alcohol is often recommended but it isnt the most effective solution. Citrol 266 Degreaser is ideal at penetrating and dissolving sap and droppings. Just spray it on and let it sit to make removing sap significantly easier. Citrol 266 is also ideal for removing tar, insect guts, and most any other road grime that sticks to your car or truck. While rubbing alcohol isnt my first choice, its a great addition to help with difficult to remove sap.

Youll also need a good microfiber rag. Microfiber is the ideal material for wiping the surface of your finish while having the least opportunity to cause abrasive damage. Microfiber has a thick nap which is an excellent protective layer. The microfibers within the nap can trap abrasives and keep them from grinding against the surface of your clear coat.

Get With The Hand Wash Instead Of The Automatic Car Wash

Automatic car washes are great and convenient for that quick car wash. But they can rarely help when it comes to getting hardened sap off of your car. So, skip the automatic car wash and opt for a good ole hand washing.

  • First, gather all of your supplies.
  • Youll need a bucket of hot water, gloves to protect your hands, a power washer if you have it a sponge, car wash soap and a good, brand-new and clean microfiber cloth.
  • Next, see if you can park your car without the sun beaming down on it. Stay far away from trees! You dont want more sap on the car! That sun will also be no good for this job, as it will dry your water quite prematurely- while leaving those ugly hard water stains. This will also increase the chances of your car getting starched too.
  • Move on to rinsing your vehicle completely and thoroughly. You dont want to leave not a single nook or cranny with dirt on it.
  • If you do have a power washer, make sure that your nozzle is on a wide setting, so that you can reach a lot more of the car with the water setting. This will also ensure that you dont damage the paint on your car.
  • After you have rinsed your car, its an all-out mission to remove that sap! So, get the scrubbing- and make sure that you put some good ole elbow grease into the cleaning with your clean sponge and soap. You can also use a washing mitt or an old bath towel. You dont want an abrasive cleaning cloth, as you dont want to damage your paint job.
  • Rinse your car and then repeat the steps above.
  • Using A Paint Cleaner To Help Clear Up Discoloration

How to Safely Remove Tree Sap from Your Car

If your cars paint job has discolorations in the clear coat after removing tree sap or insect droppings then you may want to try using a paint cleaner. A paint cleaner is different from a clay bar. Clay bars remove contaminants above the surface while a paint cleaner removes contaminants from within the surface.

Paint cleaners are typically a combination of very fine abrasive and solvent. Meguiars makes a truly outstanding paint cleaner if this is a route you want to explore. Apply a small amount on an application pad or microfiber towel and work into the area that is discolored. It isnt wax and doesnt need to dry. Work it in by wiping in a straight line from the front to the back of the vehicle. When done, wipe away with a clean microfiber towel.

Its important to note that this product is very fine abrasive so try to limit its use to stains and discolorations that have not responded to other methods.

Nothing is worse than getting sap in your hair. This can easily be taken out with peanut butter. The oils found in peanut butter help break down the sap, making it easy to comb out. Simply cover areas with sap and use a hair dryer to soften. Comb out and wash hair as usual. Mayonnaise has the same effect. Allow the mayonnaise to sit for several minutes before rinsing and then comb hair.
