How To Start A Car With A Dead Key Fob
Once youre inside, getting the car started is actually pretty easy. Automakers know that your keyless ignition may need to work if the fob dies, and the system has been designed to work even with a non-functioning remote. Some cars are equipped with a means of starting the car manually, and some have a backup built into the key fob that works without a key.
Even if your car has keyless entry, you may not have noticed that theres actually a key slot somewhere on the steering column. Many Mazda vehicles, for example, are equipped this way. The switch you turn is actually a plastic cap that pops off, revealing a key slot underneath.
If your keyless entry works with a START button and there isnt a mechanical key slot, theres still a way to start the car. Use the key fob to push the START button. Some manufacturers have a backup system that allows this method to work if the key fob battery is dead. For example, many newer Fords have a pocket in the center console or a slot on the steering column for you to insert the fob itself and start the vehicle.
Carmakers have been moving on from the traditional key for several years now and theres no scenario they havent seen by now. If you find yourself locked out or unable to start the vehicle, visit the OEM website or contact roadside assistance. Theyll get you back on the road in no time.

You Might Have A Secret Key Hidden Inside Your Key Fob
There are different forms of key fobs in the industry these days. There are ones like Tesla that look like toy cars. There are generic ones that are pretty straight-forward in most peoples eyes.
Then there are ones that have a mechanical key hidden inside the key fob.
For car owners with this type of key fob, its a useful tool having a backup key in certain situations, especially when you need to unlock the drivers side front door in the event the key fob malfunctions or the batteries of the key fob go completely dry. Having that hidden key can be a time-saver all you need to do is know where its located and then take them out when needed.
Most key fobs with hidden physical keys typically store them inside the fob. This can be accessed by a pushing a button on the key fob and then pulling the key out. In some cases, the key automatically comes out. In other cases, youre going to have to pull it out. Once youve taken out the key, the next step is to look for the key slot on the door handle of your car. Again, some key slots are easy to find, but in other instances, youre going to have to look behind the door handle to find the slot or remove a plastic cap next to the door handle to reveal the key slot. So, if your key fob runs out of battery or malfunctions completely, this mechanical backup key could spell the difference between being able to drive away without a problem and getting stuck somewhere without any access to your car.

How To Splice Into Existing Wiring
When connecting to existing wiring for aftermarket installations, there are numerous methods available. We are going to talk about a few of the more common methods. The best way to splice into existing wiring is to solder every splice and then protect the bare wire connection with heat shrink and/or electrical tape. This method takes the longest and is the most expensive but tends to be the most durable connection. Other commonly used methods include using butt connectors and Scotch Locks. Butt connectors and t-taps are available in various sizes for various gauge wire. The different colors available reflect which size the connectors are.
Butt connectors are basically a metal tube wrapped in plastic insulation. To splice into a wire using a butt connector, you would cut the wire in the location where you want to install the butt connector. Then crimp one end of the wire you just cut into one end of the butt connector. Next, you would twist the new wire that you are installing to the other end of the cut wire. Then install the twisted end of the two wires into the other end of the butt connector and crimp this end as well.
Wrapping the butt connector with electrical tape or heat shrink tubing protects the connection from moisture and other debris.
Scotch Locks tend to be a less dependable connection but they are very quick to install. They do not require cutting of the wire you want to splice into and the splice can be made with a single crimp.

Unlock The Car Door Manually With Keys
This is the very first thing to try out when your alarm is ringing and you dont have access to the remote somehow or maybe it isnt working. So, just insert your car keys in the drivers side car door lock and turn it to unlock. If the alarm doesnt go off even after the door has opened, just lock and unlock the door with the key a few times.
In case you cant open the drivers side door lock with your keys, try to open one of the passenger side doors and turn on the ignition with the key. This method of manually unlocking the passenger side car door may or may not work but most people have found the drivers side to be effective.
Car alarms are generally designed as such that theyll turn off when in contact with the right car key or keyfob. If the car door is already unlocked, then try locking it with the key and then unlocking it again. Since your car is being locked and unlocked by the correct key, it should send a signal to the car alarm to shut down.

Wiring Remote Turn On To A Switch
Another option for providing a proper remote turn on circuit is to wire constant power and ground to a switch and then wire the output of the switch to the amplifier’s remote turn on. This way you can manually control when the amplifier turns on and off by the flip of a switch. The problem with wiring the remote turn on this way is if you forget to flip the switch to the OFF position, the amplifier will stay on creating a draw on the battery while the vehicles electrical system is not charging, which could result in a dead battery.
Wiring remote turn on to a switch is very common in off-road vehicle installations such as UTVs, ATVs, side by sides, etc…

How Keyless Ignition Works
Keyless ignition systems come with a fob that you can keep tucked away in your pocket, purse, briefcase, or anywhere in close proximity to the receiver inside the vehicle. The fob transmits a unique low-frequency signal to the car’s computer system, which then validates that the correct signal has been sent and allows you to push a button on the dashboard or console to start the engine. Shutting off the motor is just as hassle-free: Simply press the start/stop button. And, in addition to keyless ignition, most systems also include keyless entry, allowing you to enter the car without inserting a key or hitting a button on the fob.
Even though keyless ignition has become widely available, even on affordable vehicles, these systems haven’t yet reached the status of automotive necessity, as have power windows and door locks. Still, the convenience factor is a selling point for many car shoppers. It can be particularly helpful for drivers with arthritis or other disabilities that impede their ability to grip and turn a key.
