BMW Apple CarPlay compatibility is limited because it requires the NBT Evo head unit with ID5 or ID6 software. In other words, your BMW needs the latest on-board computer and operating system. Even if you have a vehicle from 2016, 2015 or 2014 with recent technology, your vehicle may only have the ID4 hardware, or the older head unit hardware, regular NBT.
If your BMW is equipped with a compatible head unit, BimmerTech can perform a software activation to enable Apple CarPlay. In some cases, you might need to add a WiFi antenna if your car does not already have one, to allow establishing a wireless connection between your iPhone and BMW head unit. You can check here if your BMW needs one and if so order it with us. With the appropriate hardware fitted in your vehicle, BimmerTech, unlike BMW, can do the BMW CarPlay activation even if you live in a country which is not on the Apple CarPlay availability list.
As for the Apple CarPlay subscription, in December 2019 BMW announced that, starting from 2019/2020 cars with the latest iDrive 7.0, BMW owners wont have to pay any kind of fees. Of course, that only covers the newest cars, and compatible 2018. Older BMWs will be charged a $300 one-time fee . Still, by finally offering free BMW CarPlay, 2020 and later BMW models are taking a step forward rather than backwards.
If the original BMW Apple CarPlay activation is unavailable for your vehicle, there are still two ways to upgrade your BMW.

Removing The Old Radio
Once youve taken apart the surrounding trim pieces and have exposed the radio unit, you can start by disconnecting it. Note that the radio-slash-stereo unit is usually mounted to the dash in one of 3 ways. The process for removing the radio will thus differ:
- Spring Clips This is where the radio/stereo is mounted using a metal sleeve and spring clips. To get the radio out, youll have to use DIN-standard radio removal tools. These are like U-shaped horseshoes. Youll need to insert the DIN tools into the holes on either side of the radio/stereo unit. Then, youll hear a click, as the spring clips are released. Now hooked onto the radio, you can then pull it out.
- Bolted In In this instance, the radio/stereo is secured to the dash with brackets and held in place with bolts. Unlike the spring clips, this will require removing interior trim surrounding the dash. As thats complete, find the screws or bolts that secure the radio/stereo unit onto the dash. These are often mounted on the left and right sides of the radio unit. Unscrew them, and pull the radio free.
- Rail Mounts Here, the radio is mounted to a guide rail inside the dashboard. Removing the stereo-slash-radio unit will be similar to the above. Either, release the spring clips or remove the screws or bolts holding it in place. Once thats done, youll also have to remove the guide rails, as that might interfere with the new unit. Note, that once the guide rails are gone, you cant reinstall the old radio.

Replace The Cars Head Unit
The most efficient way to make an older vehicle compatible with CarPlay is to replace the head unit. You might have been around for the transition from cassette decks to CD players. Well, nows the time for a new type of head unit that accommodates advanced applications.
A new head unit doesnt just make your car compatible with CarPlay. It might also allow you to maximise other modern features like reversing cameras and integrated multimedia systems.
Not all head units are compatible with just any car, though. So while you have spent time tinkering with your vehicle, or if youre familiar with CD players and touch-screen units, its still best to let a professional installer recommend the right head unit and do the work for you.
How Much Does Apple Carplay Installation Cost
If youve already got an iPhone and a vehicle that is compatible with Apple CarPlay then there will be no cost to install and connect the software on your vehicle. However, if you need to install a smart radio into an older vehicle then youll need to pay for the cost of the new radio and installation costs if youre going to get someone else to fit it for you.
Most smart radios will start from around $100, but some can be a lot more expensive as they integrate extra features like a back-up camera so you can see where youre reversing without having to turn your head around. However, for the Apple CarPlay, youll just need to find a smart radio that is compatible with the software .
The price for installing Apple CarPlay into a non-compatible vehicle will depend on the age of the model as older models may require more extensive labor to enable it to be fully compatible e.g installing USB ports and rewiring behind the touchscreen. You could be paying anything from $200 to over $1,000 depending on where you go.

How Do You Install Apple Carplay In Older Vehicles
Apple CarPlay set-up is fairly simple if you have an iPhone and if your carsupports CarPlay. You just start the car, make sure Siri is on, connect your iPhone to the vehicle and let Siri do the rest.
Some cars have a voice command button on the steering wheel. Others would require you to touch and hold the app button on your screen. The built-in controls are instinctive. You wont be distracted while you drive.
Newer models support wireless CarPlay. But for older car models, a USB cable might be necessary.
Plugging your iPhone into the system is as simple as charging your phone. But some people might arguethat the wire gets in their way while driving. Fortunately, the aftermarket has developed wireless CarPlay solutions if your car is old or if you bought a used car to save some bucks.
Seven Smart Auto breaks down three ways to add Apple CarPlay in older cars:
Does Carplay Take Control Of The Dashboard
Not yet, but it is happening in the near future.
CarPlay as it is right now is essentially just an external display for your phone, and Siri can only handle requests that relate to your device. So while Siri can change the volume, it can’t raise the temperature or activate your cruise control.
However this is likely to change going forward, with Apple announcing a new version of CarPlay at WWDC 2022. Arriving sometime in 2023, CarPlay 2.0 will have the ability to take over every screen in your car, and let you access car controls that are currently off limits. Much like Android Automotive OS, but running off your phone instead of being pre-installed on your car.
This likely means that you don’t have to use Apple software because you like a certain car. Not if you don’t want to, something that isn’t really possible with Android Automotive OS.
Just like other CarPlay features, CarPlay 2.0 will require automakers to opt in. Some have already done so, including Polestar which runs its cars on Android Automotive and took its sweet time bringing CarPlay to its cars.
But for the time being, and until CarPlay 2.0 is ready, in-car systems are being kept firmly separate. In the meantime some carmakers do offer CarPlay in a split-screen mode, ensuring you have access to both your phone and car systems while you’re driving.

Adding Wireless Apple Carplay To A Car With Normal Carplay
If your car currently has Apple Carplay compatibility, then we dont blame you for wanting it to be wireless. Sure, all you really have to do is plug your phone into the system as if youre charging it, but then the wire gets in the way and if anything happens to the wire itself, then you can say goodbye to using Carplay altogether. Fortunately, there are plenty of wireless Carplay solutions in the aftermarket.
One of the best solutions that Apple Insider found is a handy piece of equipment called CPLAY2air. This device is basically a USB dongle that plugs right into the same USB that you plug your phone into to access standard Carplay. According to Apple Insider, the dongle mimics a legitimate Carplay receiver, which seamlessly connects to your phone whenever you get in the car. Judging by the reviews, it seems to work very well and currently only costs $129.
What Are The Best Single Din Systems
What if your car has a single DIN opening and cant accommodate a large touchscreen? Dont worry, as there are plenty of systems with flip out screens, such as this Pioneer model featured on Crutchfield. The screens wire up like the double DIN variety, but theyre much more compact and will fit just about any car with a smaller radio enclosure.
Now that you know what it takes to get the ultimate iPhone integration in your car, we recommend shopping around to see what works best for your vehicle and budget. Not all systems are created equal, so make sure to do your research ahead of time.
