How To Value My Car

Don't Miss

What Comes Next After A Total Loss Insurance Claim

What is my car worth? | KBB Car Value | Autotrader

So your car has been declared a total loss. Your insurance company is sending you a payment and taking ownership of your vehicle . What happens next?

In this situation, you have a bunch of cash and no vehicle .

Ideally, your insurance company gave you enough money to buy a similar vehicle from the open market. If you drove a 2014 Toyota Camry, for example, then your insurance payout should be sufficient to approximately buy you a 2014 Toyota Camry from a seller.

Alternatively, you can put the money towards a new vehicle. If a new Toyota Camry costs $25,000, for example, and your insurance payout for your old vehicle was $15,000, then you might pay $10,000 out of pocket to buy a brand new Toyota Camry.

What Is Actual Cash Value

If you are involved in a collision, typically your vehicle would be considered a total loss when the cost to repair the vehicle is higher than the actual cash value of the vehicle. ACV is determined by taking the replacement value of your car and then subtracting the depreciation or wear and tear costs of the car.

The Replacement The Depreciation = Actual Car Value

But what is considered a total write-off? How is that determined? If repairs to the car would cost more than the actual cash value of the vehicle, it wouldnt make financial sense for them to pay for repairs and would be considered a total loss. Insurers employ claims adjusters to assess your vehicle. Once the adjuster writes off the automobile as a total loss, it is branded as salvage. The cash value is determined by the make, model, mileage and conditions. Next, it will be auctioned off for its salvage value.

Here is a simple formula to help make sense of the claims process:

  • Actual Cash Value cost to repair + salvage value = Claim decision
  • IF cost to repair + salvage value > ACV = Total loss
  • IF cost to repair + salvage value < ACV = Repair the vehicle

1. Total loss payout for an at-fault accident:

If you are found to be at-fault, your claim will fall under your collision insurance if you have bought the coverage. Your insurer will pay the cost of replacement, while the payout will be based on current market value, minus your deductible.

2. Total loss payout for a not at-fault accident:

Although there are several car pricing guides available, theyre not created equal. Thats because each car valuation site uses a different algorithm to calculate car value.

KBB seems to be one of the most accurate and reliable valuation sites out there, says Andrew King, director at Jamjar.com, a leading UK car-buying comparison site. KBB is able to use real-world used car prices, gathered on a daily basis from wholesale auctions, independent and franchised dealers, rental fleets, manufacturers, and other sources in order to give you as accurate a valuation as possible.

For run-of-the-mill mass-produced vehicles, KBB is still the go-to for most people, although Edmunds is quite good as well, adds Dorr.

Q: What Can Reduce A Cars Value

A:When buying a car, damaged bodywork, high mileage and poor specification are the main factors that will reduce the value of a car. So, if youre checking a valuation with Parkers and its at odds with the price of the car youre looking at, there could be a big difference in the mileage or condition. When selling a car, the same factors hold true but at least you can decide whether that small dent is worth fixing before you sell.

What Can Increase Your Car’s Value

  • Excellent condition

The better condition your car is in the more it may be worth. If your car has zero cosmetic damage and a tidy interior it will likely lean towards a higher price point.

  • Great service history

Usually, buyers want to buy a well-maintained car that has a complete service record and not too many previous owners. Being able to prove your service history can go a long way when it comes to price.

  • Extra features

Everyone likes something a little extra. If your car is loaded with optional extras then assume you may get a little more for it. When selling note anything like roof racks, rear-facing camera, new sound system or other media modifications.

  • Popular colour

When it comes to appearance some colours can be worth more than others. Having a sporty red or jet black car could pull in a few extra dollars when selling.

Toyota Recalls 2022 Tundra Lexus Nx250 And Nx350 Over Parking Brake

Potential Number of Units Affected 83,725

Summary

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain 2022 Lexus NX250, NX350, and Toyota Tundra vehicles. The Skid Control ECU within the Brake Actuator Assembly may falsely detect an overcurrent condition of the Electronic Parking Brake Actuator and enter a failsafe mode which prevents the EPB from being engaged. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, Light Vehicle Brake Systems. An electric parking brake that cannot be engaged while in park may result in a vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will reprogram the Skid Control ECU, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by October 31, 2022. Owners may contact Toyotas customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyotas numbers for this recall is 22TA11 and 22LA04.

Gather Information About Your Vehicle

Before attempting to calculate your cars value, you will want to gather several facts about your vehicle. You should understand the cars history and the factors that have contributed to its depreciation since its purchase. The key information generally required includes:

  • Make, model and year Verifying that each of these pieces of information are accurate is important. It is not uncommon to confuse your model with another, especially if your vehicle model is no longer sold.
  • Mileage When possible, obtain your mileage directly from your speedometer. This, along with the vehicle condition, are two of the most important factors in valuing your car.
  • Condition Cars in excellent interior, exterior and mechanical condition will typically be valued at a significantly better price than vehicles in poor condition.
  • Features Knowing all of your vehicles features may take some research as new features are always added to new models. Ask yourself what upgrades your car has, such as all-wheel drive, power steering or anti-lock brakes.
  • Color As trivial as this may seem, color can make a difference in value. Yellow, it turns out, is one of the best colors for resale value. Even orange and green can do the same, primarily with sports cars. Cars with such colors tend to benefit from scarcity, while white, black and blue cars are common, do not often stand out and may have less demand.

Factors That Decrease The Value Of Your Car

Put simply: the lower the mileage, the more desirable a car is, which reflects in its value. High mileage cars are more likely to require costly upkeep in the long run, which is why they’re worth less.

A car with a low number of owners is more likely to have been well-maintained compared to an example with numerous owners because they’ve kept it for longer, and will therefore have maintained the car accordingly to prevent costly faults.

Cars depreciate in value as they get older due to the technology and drivetrain becoming dated compared to modern equivalents. Although older cars still have plenty of life left in them if maintained correctly, their remaining working life isn’t as long as newer examples.

There’s a number of elements on your car, that need to be replaced throughout its lifetime and these can affect how much your car is worth. For example, if your tyres have a small amount of tread left, these will need to be replaced by the next owner.

If your car is due an MOT in the near future, this will reduce the value of your car.

How Accurate Is A Car Valuation

Diminished Value Oklahoma

Used car valuations are an estimate only based on the mileage, general condition and age of your car.

The true value of your vehicle will vary depending on a number of factors – such as service and MOT history, any wear, tear or damage your car may have and how much potential buyers will be willing to pay.

Make Sure Any Buyer Is Legitimate

If you sell your car to a trader it should be easy to establish how legitimate they are. And if you take the car to their premises, youll be able to see instantly what kind of business they run. Selling privately isnt quite so straightforward. Any buyer should want to come and view the vehicle. When they contact you, ask for their name and address, mobile number and landline. No legitimate buyer should have a problem supplying these.

Information You’ll Need To Estimate Your Car’s Value

Youll typically need to gather the following information to get a price on your vehicle. The more accurate you are, the more reliable your estimate or offer will be.

Year, make and model. Say you have a 2015 Nissan Sentra SL. “Sentra” is the model, and SL is the trim level. To find your trim level, look for the chrome letters on the back of the car. You may also find this in your owners manual or on your vehicles title, or by looking up the vehicle identification number in a free online database like Carfax.

Color and optional equipment. The color of your vehicle can have an impact on its value, so be specific if given an option to select more than just standard colors. Optional equipment includes any features that dont come standard with the model, such as heated seats, a sunroof or leather upholstery. Sometimes, optional equipment is grouped in a package and given a fancy name like the sports or convenience package.

Vehicle condition. Pricing guides use varying terms to describe the condition of vehicles. Read the description of each condition level carefully and be honest when evaluating what matches your car to avoid receiving an inaccurate estimate. According to Kelley Blue Book, people tend to overestimate their cars condition. Unless the car is showroom fresh, it is unlikely to be “outstanding,” for example.

How to Value a Car

The most asked question when it comes to totaled rental cars. How much money will I actually get?

The better you can back up your case with documentation and proof, you may have a better chance of getting higher compensation. An attorney can help you gather these documents and negotiate with the insurance company.
