What Is Wrapping A Car

How Is A Wrap Installed

The Car Wrap Process

First, the shop that’s doing the wrap washes the vehicle and details it with a clay bar to remove any contaminants from the surface of the paint. Some installers use a solution of isopropyl alcohol to clean the paint then blow off any remaining dirt particles with compressed air.

The shop then removes the bumpers, headlights and taillights so that the installer can apply the wrap as close to the edges of the body panels as possible. If a customer doesn’t feel comfortable with the shop taking the car apart, the installer will omit this step and instead use a scalpel-like tool to cut the vinyl around the lights and grilles.

The installers then apply the vinyl wrap to the body of the vehicle. They use a heat gun to make the material more pliable, so it can properly hug the contours of the vehicle. Some of the more advanced wrap designs, such as those using graphics or custom colors, will require additional vinyl layers. Finally, the installers use a soft felt squeegee to remove any air pockets.

The whole process can take a few days to complete. It’s longer if you want the doorjambs to match. The doorjambs alone will take a day and a half, Hülz said. The doors need to be taken apart before being wrapped, which adds more labor and cost to the installation. Hülz says black cars make the ideal candidates for wrapping: The doorjambs are less noticeable and you don’t have to spend extra for them to be wrapped.

Wrap Vs Paint When Can A Wrap Be Cheaper

Earlier I mentioned a few exceptions were car wraps can be cheaper than paint. Lets look at them below.Wrap vs Paint Race cars

Race cars have to change their look very often. They change their colors and they change their sponsors. Moreover, the cars often have multiple colors, stripes and designs. Likewise, to make quick color and design changes, wrapping can be done in a less costly manner than paint. Not to mention, when there are multiple colors, paint gets expensive really quick.

Race cars also incur damage on the race track where they need repairs more often than road cars do. Given its usually a panel or two that need to be repaired, its cheaper to just wrap the repaired or replaced panel than it is to paint it. Painting requires quite a bit more prep time than wrapping. For small sections that have to be repaired often, vinyl wrapping can be less expensive.

Easier Color And Design Swapping

When you want to change the look of your car, vehicle wraps have the edge over paint jobs. If you choose paint, you need to repaint the entire vehicle to get a new look, which can take a lot of time to accomplish. Additionally, its often difficult to place special effects and finishes on your car with paint, limiting your options when you decide to change your vehicles appearance.

Unlike paint, you can quickly swap out older vehicle wraps for new ones, allowing you to update your branding or style as needed. Simply peel the older vehicle wrap off and apply a new one to the car to give it a whole new look. Vehicle wraps can also more easily facilitate effects, colors and finishes that paint can struggle with. For example, color shift, satin, pearl and chrome finishes are much easier to add to your vehicle with vehicle wraps instead of with paint.

Wrapping A Car: An Overview

In many ways, wrapping a car seems like a relatively straightforward practice. In reality, it is a task that requires both patience and expertise to execute correctly. Lets walk through the process of wrapping a car.

There are some vital questions that must be asked by both the vehicle owner and the professional who will be applying the wrap:

  • What is the make and model of the car? The complexity of the design directly affects the time needed to wrap a vehicle, varying the cost accordingly
  • Does the car have any kind of body kit? Cars with custom body kits usually add to the intricacies of the wrap, due in large part to the unique angles and creases of the aftermarket alterations
  • What vinyl hue do you want? Standard vinyl hues are offered in three different finishes – gloss, matte, or satin.
  • What parts of the car do you want to be wrapped? Maybe you want to get the car wrapped top to bottom for commercial purposes . Or perhaps you arent looking to have your entire vehicle wrapped, but rather just apply a carbon-fiber hood or red brake calipers. Each option and approach will be priced differently depending on these factors.

Pressing Out Air & Wrinkles

11. Curved surfaces can be especially challenging, forcing a two-dimensional object to conform to a three-dimensional surface. As you work, if you note wrinkles or bubbles, gently peel back the vinyl and apply heat, no more than 120 °F , and tension to stretch it into place. Use the squeegee again to work back out from the center to the edges. When wrapping other items, like mirrors, wheels, or interior panels, the same challenges apply. Be patient to get the stretch right when fitting to curved surfaces.

12. Making seams can also be a challenge, but there are a few ways to deal with it. The easiest way is to simply overlap one piece of vinyl over another, which requires careful alignment but no cutting. Kevlar cutting tape is a great invention that leaves perfect seams without a blade. Snap knives are the last alternative, a sharp edge to prevent snagging, and be gentle to prevent damage to the underlying paint.

Cost Of Wrapping A Car

Most costs incurred from having your car professionally wrapped result from the labor-intensive nature of the process. The following price approximations generally apply to the easiest and most basic wrap applications. For example, a Tesla is surprisingly one of the simplest vehicles to wrap due to its smooth, flat, and simple exterior design. Once you begin including upgrades such as specialty vinyl, custom designs, and wheel wrapping, the price starts to increase.

Here are the average baseline costs of having a professional apply a wrap to your vehicle.

  • Compact car or coupe: Prices vary depending on design, but start around $2,000.
  • Family sedan: The average family sedan would run you about $3,000.
  • Compact crossover: Most compact crossover vehicles start at around $3,500.
  • Full-size SUV: A Full-size SUV is likely to start at about $4,000.
  • Luxury sports car: Starting at about $5,000, expensive luxury vehicles can reach as high as $10,000+. For example, a Ferrari wrap would cost the owner roughly $7,000, according to experts.

Make Sure You Only Deal With Professionals

To ensure high-quality vinyl wraps, only entrust your cars in the hands of professionals. Certified automobile shops guarantee a favored outcome and a warranty.

An unprofessional amateur can damage and leave dents, scratches, and cut marks on your car. It might look the same at first, but over time, less durability and color fading will show in due course. The poor vinyl installation will very much ruin your car and your day. If the price is too good to be true, check and verify first the automobile shop’s certifications.

In contrast, professionals are very skilled to do their job with accuracy and precision. They will use high quality, tried, and tested products to produce a high-grade outcome.

Car wrapping generally comprises three phases. They are as follows.

How To Maintain A Car Wrap

Due to the fact that covers are very sensitive, you will have to pay extra attention during maintenance.

Ideally, vinyl wraps should only be cleaned with hands. Drive through, or any other volatile procedure will completely ruin the material causing it to peel. Depending on a wrap, you might be able to use a pressure washer. Even then, the pressure and temperature need to be low. Instead of going with a focused spray, make sure to use a wide-angle.

Try to clean your wrap by using a soft cloth. Even cloth with a rough surface can damage the cover. Also, make sure to remove spills and any other filth as soon as it appears.

Strong chemical products are also troublesome. Most polishes have an abrasive substance that will damage the material. So, go and buy a product that is specially used for wraps. We recommend that you consult with a wrap installing company.

Keep in mind you cant repair car wraps. But there is an option of replacing a particular section. This usually works with simple covers that can be bought in any store. However, when a car owner uses a custom design or when sections continue onto each other, it will be hard to continue the image.
