They would probably require the vehicle owner to accept responsibility for the disconnection and for any effect it may have on other drivers or passengers. They may need to replace the steering wheel and/or seat belt, if they have been specifically designed and approved for use with the airbag.

Lastly, there are no exceptions to this rule aside from children under four feet tall or those with special needs. Dr. Segura points out that children are not just little adults. “Their bodies are differently proportioned and structured, and this difference affects their ability to tolerate the whiplash motion.”
The reason, she explains, is because a baby’s head makes up 25 percent of their body, whereas an adult’s head only makes up 6 percent. “A rear-facing baby, instead of pulling forward with four times as much force as an adult’s, will slide gently up into the back of car seat,” she adds.

If Your Child Is Fussy In The Car Seat
Kids often fuss because they are strapped in, not because they are rear-facing. To reduce fussiness in a rear-facing child:
- If your child can sit upright unsupported, sit the car seat more upright to give the child a better view out the window.
- Remove the vehicle head restraint to allow the rear-facing child a better view out the window.
- Use music to help calm your child.
