Cr Survey Helps Predict Reliability Of 2022 Cars Trucks
The idea of the survey is to predict the reliability of new, 2022 model-year cars and trucks, based on their recent history, for the benefit of new-vehicle shoppers today, Fisher said. Consumer Reports also rates used cars separately.
Thats in contrast to another well-known survey that sounds similar, the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study. But its not quite the same thing. Instead of compiling responses for vehicles up to and including three model years old, the Power survey asks owners solely about 3-year-old vehicles that they purchased new.
The Consumer Reports 2021 Auto Reliability Report is based on data collected from subscribers, about their experiences with more than 300,000 vehicles. The annual survey is an omnibus questionnaire, which asks respondents to rate a long list of household purchases, not just autos.
Individual models that were introduced for the first time, or which recently got an all-new redesign, are an exception to the rule, Fisher said. If the current, 2022 model is based on a design thats less than three years old, ratings are based on survey results for the latest one or two model years, as the case may be. Thats to keep the results relevant for todays new-vehicle shoppers, instead of rating the old model, he said.
A Guide For Historically Reliable Car Brands
In 2019, the average new vehicle costs more than $36,000 a year, and when you spend that much on a car, you want it to last as long as possible.
It’s not uncommon for modern cars to run for more than a decade with only basic maintenance. As long as you repair worn out parts like tires, brake pads, and batteries, you can help your car run for many years after you buy it.
On the other hand, some cars won’t last as long as others with minimal attention. They may suffer from various mechanical issues that can be costly even with warranty coverage.
Ultimately, you want to purchase a car with a reliable reputation if you want it to last a long time. In this guide, we’ll look at a few of the most historically reliable car brands and why they stand apart from the crowd for superior build quality.
Opinion: The Most Reliable Used Car
According to Automotive News, J.D. Power reported that Tesla was not included because certain states require the auto manufacturers permission to contact its customers. Tesla wouldnt grant it in those states, and those states account for some 70 per cent of the brands sales.
Meanwhile, Consumer Reports excludes brands for which they do not have sufficient survey responses, so small-volume brands like Fiat, Jaguar, Land Rover, Maserati, Mitsubishi and even Ram are left off the list and in a certain sense, left off the hook. Because so many brands are left off the Consumer Reports list, well start from the J.D. Power list and pull in some model data about specific cars in CRs ratings to see if it backs up their findings.

The 10 Most Reliable Cars Ever Made
Some say cars arent as reliable as they used to be. While it is true that modern vehicles enjoy a shorter life cycle than some cars built in from the 1970s to the 1990s, some of the automobiles that are available right now, new or used, are reliable enough to be driven for at least a decade and up to 500,000 miles.
Many of these cars also dont have major issues and are relatively inexpensive to repair anyway. Expert websites like Consumer Reports and J.D. Power have plenty of into about that, but we compiled a shorter list with the 10 most reliable cars of all time with examples from the 1990s to the 2010s, and even 2020.
Revealed: Worlds Most Reliable Car Brands For 2022
South Korean brands have proven to be the most reliable.
In the annual JD Power vehicle dependability survey three out of the top four spots were claimed by Kia, Hyundai and Genesis, which are all part of the giant Hyundai Motor Group.
The US survey, which is now in its 33rd year, ranks car brands based on the number of problems with vehicles after three years of ownership.
It covers 184 specific problem areas across nine major vehicle categories: climate, driving assistance, driving experience, exterior, features/controls/ displays, infotainment, interior, powertrain and seats.
Kia vehicles reported 145 problems per 100 vehicles, followed by Hyundai and Genesis . Buick claimed the second spot but isnt sold in New Zealand.
Genesis, which is Hyundais luxury offshoot, was the best-placed luxury brand surpassing big-name German makers such as Porsche , BMW , Mercedes-Benz and Audi .
Genesis North America boss, Claudia Marquez, says: We are passionate about performance and believe that every detail is significant in the design, engineering, and production of all our vehicles. Which Cars Last The Longest
Reliability may not be the same as longevity, as evidenced by Forbes’ list of the longest-lasting vehicles. As it turns out, while there are tons of compact cars that are notorious for their dependability long-term, today’s SUVs and trucks make for the most durable vehicles. And by durable, they mean “most likely to last for 200,000 miles or more”.
Here are the top five longest-lasting vehicles on Forbes’ list:
People Love Tesla Do They Expect Trouble
Whats important is, that you know what youre getting into. Tesla is a great example of this, Fisher said. People love the purchase. Do they expect it to be the most trouble-free? Probably not.
In J.D. Power surveys earlier this year, Tesla wasnt officially ranked because of a small sample size. However, its unofficial score was near the bottom in the 2021 Initial Quality Study, based on the number of things gone wrong in the first 90 days of ownership. Yet Teslas unofficial score was No. 1 in the 2021 Automotive Performance Execution and Layout study, which measures how much people like their recent purchase.

Tesla Model Y Problems
As the largest EV maker, Tesla is particularly prone to reliability issues. The Tesla Model Y, the companys most popular model, is one of the 10 least reliable vehicles of 2022, according to Consumer Reports, which chronicled problems with its body fit, paint, weatherstripping, rear hatchback and climate system.
Despite Teslas low position on the reliability rankings, the brand maintains its appeal.
People who buy Teslas are very satisfied with them, but they do have their fair share of problems, Fisher says.

Before starting off the list, we believe it is just right to define what car reliability is and how it is measured. Car reliability shows how well a car performed under various circumstances. In contrast, an unreliable car is defined as a car with a constant number of component failures.
Car reliability is measured by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles . This means that the lower the number, the higher the reliability of the vehicle. To give you a good reference, the industry average in the U.S. is 93 problems per 100 vehicles. The data in this list comes from the J.D. Power 2019 U.S. Initial Quality Study.

Automakers continue to make progress in areas like infotainment that attract a lot of consumer attention, said Dave Sargent, Vice President of Global Automotive at J.D. Power. However, some traditional problems crept up this year including paint imperfections, brake and suspension noises, engines not starting and the check engine light coming on early in the ownership experience. Also, more people are having issues with their advanced driver assistance systems, which are critical for building consumer trust in future automated vehicles.
