While scratches do detract from the appearance of your car, paying a body shop for a new coat of paint or even a small touch-up can be costly. You can try buffing out surface scratches with toothpaste, using a scratch removal product for small scratches, or sanding and repainting the area if the scratch is deep.

Beside above, how much does it cost to buff scratches out of a car? Scratch Wizard , an online company that sells DIY touch up kits, estimates the cost to repair a clearcoat scratch is generally between $150 and $300 Schwartz says the cost to repair a deep paint scratch can range in price from $300 to $900.

Similarly, it is asked, how does buffing out scratches work?

Scratches dig into the surface of the paint, and the only way to remove or erase them is to level the surface surrounding them. Basically, buffing is taking away material around the scratch until it evens out, hence, scratch gone.

Is buffing a car bad?

The answer is NO, unless you’re buffing too often and too aggressively. Every time you use a buffer to correct your paint, you’re cutting away a part of clear coat that is protecting the paint and there is only a finite amount of it.

Can You Remove Clear Coat Scratches

Fortunately, clear coat scratches tend to be the most common paint scrape on the planet, and are by far the easiest to remove.

In order to eliminate this form of paint marring, a polishing method known as paint correction must be implemented, which sounds a lot more intimidating than it actually is.

Paint correction typically involves applying a cutting/polishing compound to a surface area via the use of an electric orbital polisher and a microfiber buffing pad. As the pad circulates, the varying grades of compound cut into the clear coat, slowly polishing away the scratch, layer, after layer, after layer, until it is no longer visibly or physically detectable.

Quick Nerd Note: Due to being advertised as a quick-fix solution, liquid scratch removers are one of those hassle-free options many people gravitate toward. Unfortunately, these products dont typically last very long, and when applied in excess, a liquid scratch remover will stand out like a turd in a punch bowl.

How To Buff Out Scratches On Your Car

  • 5 minute read

A deep gash in the side of your car might feel like the end of the world, but it does not have to be. Scratches can come from any number of places, like a neighboring car pulling away or a falling tree branch scraping up your paint.

Scratches are more than an aesthetic annoyance. They also take away layers of paint which protect your car, without which your car could begin rusting. Fortunately, most scratches can be easily buffed out, flawlessly fixing them without needing a visit to the body shop. Here is our guide on how to buff out even the most stubborn scratches.

How To Fix It

Make sure the area you are polishing is nice and clean. Use soapy water, and clean, rinse, and dry the area thoroughly. There are several scratch-removing polishes available, but a standard polish should work fine too. When polishing, use a microfiber cloth or something similar, which is mildly abrasive. Apply a fair amount of pressure: You are essentially trying to buff off a microscopic amount of clear coat in order to get rid of that pesky scratch. Rub in a circular motion for a few minutes, then inspect. You might need to do it a few times, but this should work for most mild surface scratches.

Paintwork Repairs To Scratches

Needing a car paint repair is inevitable. All cars are going to get dings, chips, and scratches, but it doesnt mean you have to leave them there. Deep scratches lessen the protection a paint job gives a vehicle. This leaves the metal exposed to possible corrosion.

The most common paint used by factories on vehicles today is clear-coated catalyzed enamel. Touch up paint, however, whether applied by a dealership, yourself, or by a body shop, will be lacquer.

Unlike enamel, all lacquer-based paints, whether clear, color, or primer shrink as they dry. So, although these repairs can be done at home with research and minimal cost, a dealership or reputable body shop can give you a professional looking result.

Dealerships can charge as much as $50 $300 for just 2 ounces of a VIN-matched paint, and another $500 or more to actually repair a major scratch. Even a small scratch will usually run no less than $150 $200. A body shop can often perform the work cheaper than a dealership.

There are three different types of paintwork repairs to scratches used by body shops. The following methods can fix deep scratches on car bumper, depending on your vehicle, as well as other areas of your car.

How To Clean And Maintain Your Pads

Buffing pads are reusable, but you have to maintain them. The best practice is to run your machine on a sacrificial terry cloth towel after each panel to remove the spent product, paint residue, and other gunk before applying more product and moving onto the next panel.

After youre done, you can wash buffing pads in a bucket of warm water and dish soap by simply squeezing the solution through them, then rinsing them off and drying them with a clean towel. Most household detergents easily break down polishing compounds, wax, sealant, and other products.

Its harder to do it if theyre all dried up, so to make it easier on yourself, have some soapy water ready when you finish buffing. You can throw your pads in there to soak, finish detailing your car, and then come back to wash them up.

If the pads are already dried up, youll need a soft brush to scrub the polish out. Then you can wash them as described.

Manufacturers will sell you their pad cleaner solution. You can buy it if you want, but homemade solutions work just as well.

What Does A Deep Paint Scratch Look Like

A deep paint scratch looks different from the adjacent color even from afar. The color may be slightly different, lighter or darker in color from the color around it, or it may be exposing a white or grey color through the scratch.

If the scratch is revealing a dark gray color, its past the paint and into the primer or all the way to the surface of the bare metal or plastic beneath.

Toothpaste Is An Alternative To Buffing The Whole Car

Let’s face it. Most of the time we don’t want to drop the money on having our cars professionally polished no matter how nice the car will look afterwards. And with the wide variety of products out there, most of us also don’t want to run out to the store to find the right one that can take care of our scratches.

That’s where a simple tube of toothpaste comes in. Everyone has a tube somewhere, so there’s no running to the store and searching through isles of different products from fillers to rubbing compound to polishing compound.

We recommend whitening toothpaste. It’s slightly more abrasive than regular toothpaste, but any toothpaste will do. This abrasiveness is very similar to the abrasives found in your typical container of car polish. The abrasive action can remove microscopic layers of film and clear coat, polishing what you once thought to be a permanent scratch to a brilliant shine! And depending upon which toothpaste you use, will leave the car with a minty fresh feeling!

These products can be used for localized repair to a single scratch or can be applied like a conventional wax for overall car finish restoration. Its important to keep in mind that the product performance is limited due to the mild cleansing and polishing attributes of these formulations, meaning that these scratch removal formulations might not be able to remove stronger oxidation, in which case polishing or rubbing compound should be used.
