Can You Put Apple Carplay In Any Car

Install Apple Carplay and Android Auto on your 2015 and 2016 Hyundai Vehicles

Yes, you could put Apple CarPlay in pretty much any car. Officially, Apple CarPlay is compatible with a good amount of car brands including Audi, Chevrolet, BMW, and Ford with most of the models from 2015 being built to be compatible with Apple CarPlay and other smartphone connectivity like Android Auto.

As of right now, there are over 600 models of cars that support Apple CarPlay. You would have been notified upon purchasing your car whether it was compatible with Apple CarPlay, but if youre still unsure you could check the manual or even just plug in your phone to the vehicle to see what happens.

However, if you do not have a vehicle that is already compatible with Apple CarPlay then you add the feature to any vehicle by removing your factory radio and installing an aftermarket radio.

Some cars may be easy to switch out so you may be able to handle the process yourself, however, if youre not very handy with cars and worried youre going to damage something then take it to a professional and theyll be able to get it done in no time.

You may be lucky enough to have a vehicle that only requires an update to become compatible with Apple CarPlay. Car brands like Mazda are offering upgrades on their older vehicles to install CarPlay on the new audio systems, this will cost around $500.

Does Apple Carplay Drain Battery

10% per hour with those apps plus wireless CarPlay is actually pretty impressive. On My iPhone X using an ILX-107 under IOS 12 I got about 4% battery drain per hour using CarPlay . I have just started using my iPhone 11 Pro Max but on my commute this morning I had only 2% used over the drive of an hour .

Can I Install Carplay Myself

Yes, but with a few caveats.

Your cars age is the factor that limits installation the most. Cars made before the 2000s need to be completely rewired so that their electronics can accommodate USB ports, GPS, and other features with an increased power draw. Even then you might not be able to fit a CarPlay infotainment system into it if the stereo youre replacing is too small. CarPlay is currently available on double DIN head units, i.e. units that are 4 inches tall. Youll need to wait until models with a flip-out screen become available if your car can only accommodate single DIN head units.

Cars that came out just before the introduction of CarPlay are the easiest to retrofit. For example, you dont need to replace your BMWs infotainment system if it supports iDrive. You can buy a CarPlay MMI or MultiMedia Interface instead. This serves as a bridge between the head unit and your iPhone and only requires you to connect the phone via USB. You can then run CarPlay from iDrives Multimedia menu.

Youll need an aftermarket head unit for cars that arent compatible with retrofitting kits. While the exact installation process differs slightly by manufacturer and make, there are steps all of them have in common.

Should You Buy This Thing

Oh, hell no. If you want to fully integrate it into your car, and you use an installer, the price is so far over what it’s worth it’s almost nauseating.

If you install it yourself and you don’t buy add-on wiring harnesses, there are cheaper wired CarPlay units. Then again, if you have to plug your phone into your car to use CarPlay, you might as well just plug your phone into your car and save the money on CarPlay.

If your car comes with CarPlay, definitely use it. For what it does, I’ve found it quite pleasant, and my wife is quite comforted by the backup camera. I do enjoy using CarPlay. I enjoy the new sleekness of my dashboard without a phone mount.

Now that I’ve told you my CarPlay story, I’m going to try not to think about how much it costs, how poorly integrated the CarPlay app is to the rest of the head unit, and how amazing something like this could have been if Apple hadn’t just phoned it in. I’m going to try to use it and enjoy it for what it is, and let myself feel good about giving my favorite muscle car a new toy.

How Much Does Apple Carplay Installation Cost

If youve already got an iPhone and a vehicle that is compatible with Apple CarPlay then there will be no cost to install and connect the software on your vehicle. However, if you need to install a smart radio into an older vehicle then youll need to pay for the cost of the new radio and installation costs if youre going to get someone else to fit it for you.

Most smart radios will start from around $100, but some can be a lot more expensive as they integrate extra features like a back-up camera so you can see where youre reversing without having to turn your head around. However, for the Apple CarPlay, youll just need to find a smart radio that is compatible with the software .

The price for installing Apple CarPlay into a non-compatible vehicle will depend on the age of the model as older models may require more extensive labor to enable it to be fully compatible e.g installing USB ports and rewiring behind the touchscreen. You could be paying anything from $200 to over $1,000 depending on where you go.

    What Were They Thinking

CarPlay is a weird, mutant in-dash app released in 2014 that would have Steve Jobs rolling over in his grave. I know. That’s harsh. But CarPlay is a mistake.

The best way to describe CarPlay is as a very limited, virtual iPhone running on someone else’s hardware. I happen to be running CarPlay on an Alpine iLX-107, but you can actually get CarPlay on decks from a bunch of aftermarket stereo suppliers, as well as built into the decks provided by many car companies.

    CarPlay is just an app.

With my deck, if you want to listen to the radio , you have to exit the CarPlay interface and control that in the regular Alpine UI. The Alpine UI also has some vehicle information and controls, but all that is outside the CarPlay interface. It’s as if you’re running Windows, but launch Linux in a VM, and then, for some apps, you have to leave the VM and go back to Windows.

That CarPlay is basically an app on top of a bunch of random craptastic head unit interfaces is gob-smacking.

There are two types of head units you can get with CarPlay. Most CarPlay units require you to physically connect your phone to the CarPlay unit via a Lightning cable in order for the CarPlay functions to come alive.

Other than the reduction in clutter on your dashboard, there’s really no good reason for CarPlay to exist. You can accomplish as much with an iPhone, an external mic, and an Aux port to the stereo.

Why Upgrade Your Car With An Aftermarket Carplay Infotainment System

Aftermarket infotainment systems offer the same functionality as the stock units in CarPlay-compatible cars at a fraction of the cost of a new vehicle. They arent limited to CarPlay alone infotainment systems by leading manufacturers like Kenwood, Pioneer, and alpine come with lots of advanced features. These include support for Bluetooth microphones, detailed maps that dont rely on Siri, and the ability to mirror your phone. Theyre also compatible with CarPlays Android-based competitor, Android Auto. This lets family members who dont use Apple products enjoy a better hands-free driving experience too.

To have Apple CarPlay you will need an iPhone, a compatible car that can support the Apple CarPlay software, and a USB cord. Most cars require the USB cord to connect from the phone to the vehicle, however, there are some newer models of cars that offer wireless CarPlay connectivity.

CarPlay is not an app on the iPhone, so you wont need to download anything to use it. All compatible vehicles will recognize CarPlay when the iPhone is connected and it will sync applications from the phone to the vehicle touchscreen so they are safer to use whilst driving.

To launch Apple CarPlay, youll need to plug your iPhone into the USB cable and connect it to your vehicle in the usual USB port, which may have a CarPlay or smartphone icon next to it.

Once youve plugged it in, some text should appear on the touchscreen of your vehicle asking you if you want to use Apple CarPlay with this device. Touch the button for yes and then youll need to activate voice control Siri on your iPhone by holding down on the talk button.

If your vehicle supports wireless CarPlay, then to set it up you need to press down the voice command button on your steering wheel and make sure your vehicle has the wireless or Bluetooth mode turned on. On your iPhone, go to settings, then the general area and select CarPlay and select your vehicle from the list.
