Im suspicious of the large number, but perhaps if you live in a large city with million of potential renters, that could be a real possibility. However, even if youre only earning a few hundred bucks, its certainly something to think about.
The amount that your car will earn per hour will largely depend on the type of car and its age. For example, on GetAround.com theres an electric Tesla roadster being advertised for $50/hour, but a more common 2004 Acura is being advertised for only $10/hour.
Theres never any cash exchanged between the renter and the car owner. The companies act like a middle man by collecting the cash and sending you a paycheck.
What Are The Negative Aspects Of Renting Out A Car
What about the risks of renting a car to someone else? While there are quite a few positives to participating in a car-sharing program, there are some potential negatives and risk you should think about before renting your personal vehicle, including:

Step 4: Documentation
This is something you have to get down pat or you can risk financial disaster. The only requirements for renting on Turo are a person must be 18 or older, have a valid license and have a valid payment method. Because insurance is involved, it is important to vet your customer. If you are delivering the car in person, you simply ask for their license, check the expiration and date of birth and then upload it to the reservation. If it is contactless, have your customer send a picture of their license and a close-up selfie holding the license next to their face.

In order to book a car through Turo, you need to go through a screening process. Turo needs to verify that you are 21, that you have a valid drivers license and clean driving record, and that you meet their auto insurance score benchmark.
The auto insurance score benchmark is, in my opinion, the most important. Its the equivalent of a credit score for insurance agencies. Essentially, it is a three-digit score that predicts the probability that your would-be renter will file an insurance claim.
The drivers ability to utilize the rental service will be highly dependent on this score. If its bad, Turo will not allow the user on the site. The process is nearly identical for Getaround renters to be able to rent from the app. This is how Turo and Getaround sustain the reliability of their marketplaces, and frankly, its a key way they stand apart from traditional rental companies.
What If Something Happens To My Car While Its Rented
If something happens to your car while the renter is driving it or before they drop off the car when theyre done, the renter will report the problem to Turo, the police, and you as the owner. Turo also offers roadside assistance for renters in most cities. If theres an accident or incident, the police will have your car towed, and you will then need to decide whether you want to take it to a mechanic or the scrap yard . So the million dollar question iswho pays for this?

How To Rent Out Your Car
There are many car-sharing services available today with which you can rent your car to others. Some of the most popular ones are Turo, Zipcar, and Avail. A formerly car-sharing service, once known as Car2go and later as SHARE NOW began winding down operations in 2019.
Turo, formerly RelayRides, is the first and largest car-sharing marketplace. It is headquartered in San Francisco but with owners that rent their cars dotted across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. For example, lets say you lived in Los Angeles and had a 2018 Ford Taurus. Using Turos car-sharing calculator, and renting your car out for 16 days per month, you would net about $54 per day or $894 per month. And that leaves you with almost half of the month to use the car yourself.
If you look on Turo now, you might see some cars renting for $706 a day. Prices vary widely based on demand.

Well, to start with, you dont have to own a whole rental car business to share your car.
You just need a vehicle in good working condition and one of the many car-sharing apps on the market today.
Another big difference is in the length of time you can use the car.
For car sharing, you can rent out your car for a few hours a day when youre not using it, and have it back whenever you need it.
Traditional rentals are taken in terms of days, weeks, or months.
You can also decide you want to rent out your car last minute if the renter is in your immediate area and youve got no plans.
With a traditional rental, you have to schedule your time days or weeks in advance.
The Turo Experience: An Introduction To Car
I intentionally purchased my first property 1.5 miles from the office so that my primary method of transportation would be my bicycle or my feet. Every single day, I would bike past my car in the drive. I thought, Its a shame this car is just sitting there. How can I put it to work for me? Can I rent my car out to someone since Im not using it?

Rented To Stolen: The Line Isnt Always Clear
The main risk factor here is the old adage drive it like you stole it/rented it. And in the case of Turo, its sometimes both. Because theft is not altogether uncommon on Turo. And its not as clear-cut as regular car theft usually, if someone steals your car, its obvious and you know to immediately call the police.
On Turo, a renter may be in contact but give you excuses for the continued delay in returning the car. In those cases, youre kind of on your ownby most accounts it sounds like Turo just tells you to keep trying to reach the renter, and wait for them to get back to you or return the car, instead of calling the police right away.
In many of these cases, the owner of the car uses GPS to track it, and goes looking for it themselves. Which is exciting, and can be effective, but its also a little dangerous.
One of the videos detailing this type of situation is from a Turo member whose Kia Sorrento has been stolen by a renter. The video is informative and actually pretty entertaining The same Turo member also had a similar incident with another of her vehiclesa brand-new Corvette Stingrayin which the car was abandoned in a parking lot. She was able to track it with the built-in GPS.
Another member had his BMW M4 stolen. It was recovered, but pretty much trashed. In his case, it sounds like the Turo repair coverage, and the way their team handled the whole situation was excellent, and the owner was very satisfied.
