If we were to tell you there’s a room where people spend hours each day and even eat in you’d probably assume it gets cleaned often. But when it comes to the interiors of our cars, that’s not always the case.
TODAY Home asked Christian Newman, a professional auto detailer and owner of C& J Automotive Detailing in Slidell, Louisiana, how to clean like a pro. Hes got some great tips for keeping vehicles looking like new, no matter what you put them through.
Newman suggests going through the steps below about once a month, or as needed. If you have school pickups, carpools and sports practices on the horizon, you may want to step that up to twice a month.
Michael Dickson, president of the International Detailing Association, recommends a professional detailing about twice a year.
No Windshield Washing Fluid
If the reservoir is empty , use an unlikely substitute to clean your windshield: feminine hygiene maxi-pads, a box of which you could stash in the trunk. Hold a pad on the sticky side and rub the windshield vigorously. The glass will really shine once youve wiped it to the max. Always keep these items in your car to be more productive.

Getting Rid Of Stains On Car Upholstery
Before starting the stain removal process, youll need to prepare the following two homemade cleaning solutions:
For the first part of the cleaning youll need:
- ¼ cup of baking soda
- 1 cup of warm water
Mix together the baking soda and water and youre ready for the second part.
For the second part of the cleaning process youll need:
- Warm water
- A few squirts of dish detergent and a
- ¼ cup of vinegar in
- A spray bottle
Mix the warm water, the few squirts of dish detergent and the ¼ cup of vinegar in a spray bottle. Shake the mixture well and leave for 5 minutes to set. And now were ready to start cleaning the car upholstery:
STEP 1: Use a toothbrush to gently apply the baking soda and water solution to any stains that you might have on the upholstery and leave the solution for 30 minutes to penetrate the stains
STEP 2: After the half hour, use a clean dry towel to blot the stains with the baking soda and water. Be careful to absorb as much liquid as possible before commencing the next step in the car upholstery cleaning process.
STEP 3: Use the detergent, water and vinegar mixture to spray the upholstery starting with the front seats and working your way to the back.
STEP 4: After spraying the seats, use a stiff-bristled brush to gently work in the solution.
STEP 5: Leave the mixture to sit for 15 minutes on the seats, and then use dry towels to absorb excess moisture.
Washing & Rinsing Your Vehicle
A top trick all the pros know is to rinse your car before washing! Putting soapy water on dry paint will grunt surface dust and road grit into your paint finish, which could cause small scratches and damage to your paint job. Not what you want! To avoid this heartache, start like the professional detailers do, with a clean water rinse to remove the dust and dirt from the exterior of your car.

Tip #: Where To Wash Your Car
While it may be tempting to wash your car on a warm, sunny day, this is actually a very common mistake.
Its widely acknowledged amongst professional detailers that you should not wash your car in direct sunlight. Water, soap, and cleaning products will dry very quickly in the sun, leading to spots and swirl marks on your paintwork and windows.
Instead, you should try to wash your car on a slightly overcast day, on a cool surface with a spray bottle on hand. You may also want to park your car somewhere flat so that you have plenty of room to fully open your doors.

Use a microfiber cloth and an ammonia-free commercial window cleaner in a spray bottle to remove the haze from interior windows. Make your own window cleaner by mixing a one-to-one solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Lower the windows slightly and start at the top of the window and work down so you will catch any drips.

Taking your pets with you in the car can be fun, but the mess they leave behind is neither wanted or encouraged. But, they can’t help it, so instead of keeping your fur babies home, here’s a super easy car cleaning hack. Have a spray bottle with plain water in it. Mist the seat where the pet hair is. Don’t soak the seat. A little water goes a long way. Using a squeegee, run it over the upholstery. It will pull all the pet hair with it.

Best Way To Clean Fabric Car Seats
The following technique is the best way to clean fabric car seats because of its simple yet highly effective ingredients. The dish soap and hot water scrub surface dirt while the vinegar breaks up and loosens grime that is more embedded into the fabric.

Follow this cleaning by using a damp towel to wipe the residue away. Repeat in sections until both the front and the back seat are clean. Allow the fabric to air dry.

When it rains after a long dry spell, a dirty windshield turns into one big mess. Get rid of streaks and blotches by pouring cola over the glass. The bubbles in the cola will fizz away the grime. Just be sure to wash the sticky cola off thoroughly or your cleaning efforts will end up attracting dust and dirt.

How To Clean Car Interior Fabric Stains
If you need to do a touch-up job on your car seats to remove stubborn stains from small areas, use the following method for how to clean car interior fabric stains. Baking soda is an ideal cleaner and deodorizer that costs almost nothing.
Fabric Car Seat Stain Remover
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 cup of warm water
- Toothbrush
To get stains out of car seats the easy way, combine the baking soda and water in a small bowl and then lightly apply a layer of the solution to the stained area of the fabric. Use the bristles of a toothbrush to work the stain out of the material using a gentle circular motion.

What Kind Of Products Should You Use
Don’t use household cleaning agents like hand soap, dishwashing detergent, or glass cleaner on the paint. These aren’t formulated for use on a car’s paint and may strip off the protective wax.
Do use a dedicated car-wash product, which is milder and specifically designed for use on automotive paint. Apply the suds with a large, soft natural sponge or a lamb’s-wool mitt.
Grease, rubber, and road-tar deposits picked up from the road often accumulate around the wheel wells and along the lower edge of the body. These can be stubborn to remove and may require a stronger product, such as a bug-and-tar remover. Use a soft, nonabrasive cloth to remove these deposits, as they can quickly blacken your sponge.
Do use a separate sponge to clean the wheels and tires, which may be coated with sand, brake dust, and other debris that could mar the car’s finish. Mild soap and water may work here if not, a dedicated wheel cleaner may be required. Be sure the cleaner is compatible with the type of finish used on the wheels. A strong formula intended for mag wheels, for instance, can damage the clear coat that’s used on the wheels that come on today’s cars. To be on the safe side, choose a cleaner that’s labeled as safe for use on all wheels.
