Protection Is Worth A Pound Of Cure

A Detailer’s Secrets On Interior Detailing For Your Car.

Common upholstery fabrics are more likely to stain than vinyl or leather. To prevent stains, its necessary to properly treat upholstery, carpet, vinyl and leather.

The best treatment for carpet and fabric is a spray-on fabric guard product.

To protect vinyl and leather, use a quality cleaner and protectant on a regular basis.

When the inevitable happens, like a mustard-loaded hot dog landing on your brand-new velour upholstery, stay calm.

Remove as much of the spill as possible by blotting, not wiping, with paper napkins, paper towels, etc.

Dont let a stain sit too long. Within a day or two, most spills will set and permanently stain your upholstery, or become very difficult to remove.

It will only take one such incident for you to realize something!

Its that a small investment in fabric and carpet protection is worth it.

Here Are The Steps For Proper Vacuuming:

Start your vacuuming job by pulling out the floor mats. Shake out the mats to remove any loose dirt. Use a 4″ upholstery attachment or the bare hose end to vigorously vacuum the mats. The more youre able to agitate the carpet, the cleaner youll get it.

Work on the rear upholstery and carpet. Push the front seats all the way forward. Use the crevice tool to vacuum the cracks of the seats, and between the seats and carpeted areas. If the seat upholstery is fabric, switch to the 4″ upholstery attachment and vacuum the rear seat and the deck under the rear window. Vacuum the rear carpet. Use the crevice tool to vacuum around the seat tracks and under the front seats. Use the round dust brush attachment to vacuum the door panels.

Tip: When vacuuming carpet, use the palm of your free hand to beat the carpet just in front of your vacuum hose or tool. As you beat the carpet, dirt that is lodged deep into the carpet will come loose for vacuuming.

What Should You Use To Wash Your Car

When most people think of washing a car they think of a traditional sponge. The problem is sponges capture and holds things like dirt and grit in their large pores. Despite your best efforts to wring it out some grit will stay embedded. It becomes like washing your car with sandpaper and can cause small scratches.

Pro detailers use a microfiber car wash mitt because that grit should fall out when you rinse. Plus personally, Ive found it makes it easier to remove grime and more fun to wash the car. You can work more elbow grease into the needed areas and get into tougher spots more easily. That’s why we include a microfiber mitt with our Decon Soap.

Diluted Degreasers For Cleaning Carpet Stains

Interior Detailing

One detailing trick that can be used for removing grease spots or stains from carpets is diluted degreasers or cleaning agents. Whether you like Purple Power, Greased Lightening, or another degreaser, its a good idea to dilute it about 5 to 1 with water before applying to interior surfaces like carpet.

Degreasers can be pretty strong , which is why people tend to mix them with water in empty spray bottles. Just use pure water to dilute whatever you are using, and youre good to go.

Why Should I Detail My Car At Home

At this point, you might think, Why bother auto detailing myself when I can pay an auto detailer to do it for me? It might be tempting if your car is going to need a whole day of auto detailing, and the initial investment might seem daunting, but it pays for itself by the second time you detail your car. Also, consider these other benefits of car detailing at home.

  • Youll save money because you provide the labor. You dont have to buy all these supplies every single time, just whatever you run out of.
  • Youll save time in the long run because a clean car is easier to keep clean, even unintended spills and pet accidents.
  • Youll gain a new appreciation for what it takes to keep a clean car.
  • Finally, your car will last longer. Auto detailing is just as much about long-term protection from the elements as it is looking great and smelling clean.

Professional auto detailing and DIY car detailing follow pretty much the same steps for a showroom finish, though the tools and supplies may vary. Interior detailing will require opening doors and getting in and out of the car often, which will likely dirty the outside of the car. Therefore, many auto detailers start by detailing the interior of the car. When, once the inside is clean and protected, they close the doors and windows and focus on exterior detailing.

Best Tips From Mobile Detailer

Keeping the inside of the car clean any time of the year can be a challenge. During the summer, beach sand or dripping ice cream cones can make it nearly impossible to keep your interior pristine.

The following tips will help with car detailing interior and maintenance.

Thoroughly vacuuming

Employing the same vacuum like the one you clean the floors of your home with wont be enough when it comes to your vehicle. Youll need a stronger piece of equipment with a hose and various attachments for those hard-to-reach places. Regularly cleaning soft surfaces will prevent debris from becoming embedded in your mats.

Clean seats carefully

When cleaning the seats, you should know that different kinds of seats need various cleaning techniques.

For example, vinyl or leather seats can be cleaned with specific leather or vinyl cleaners. Then its good to hit them with a leather brush. Then, the cleaner can be wiped off with a microfiber cloth. Also, you can condition the leather seats after shampooing to prevent cracking.

Use air-compressor

Using air compressor purge all loose dirt by starting with the inside of the rear window, then the rear floors pushing all dirt to the front of the vehicle. Its a good idea to gently utilize the air compressor around the vents and the top of the dashboard. Care should be taken not to dislodge or break any air vents.

Dont Overlook The Ac Vents When Performing Car Interior Detailing

AC vents need more than a quick wipe down. It is not enough to just clean the surface when you are car interior detailing. You need to get in between the slats too. Overlooking the AC vents could result in a musty smell over time, which is not pleasant. One of our favorite car interior cleaning tips is using a foam or sponge paintbrush to access the hard-to-reach places. You can buy them in art supplies store. The softness of the sponge also ensures you wont scratch or damage the vents while you clean.

Save Your Glass For Last

HOW TO CLEAN AND DETAIL A CAR INTERIOR !!
  • Once the carpet is clean of dust and dirt, its time for a carpet shampoo. Using Turtle Wax POWER OUT! Carpet & Mats Cleaner, thoroughly work one section at a time. Use the built-in brush or a stiff brush to agitate the cleaner and work it into the carpet. Then, use a wet-dry vacuum or steam cleaner to remove the foam and contaminants. Dont forget to pop the trunk and apply the same treatment.
  • Once everything is clean, we move on to protection. Application of Turtle Wax Inside & Out Protectant protects interior hard surfaces, such as the dash and console, from future grime and stains. It also looks great, with just the right amount of shine. Apply with one microfiber cloth and buff out with a second one. Use leather conditioner on leather seats and upholstery to restore moisture and prevent fading and cracking.
  • We save the glass for last because its the most sensitive to other interior auto detailing operations. Using a non-ammonia glass cleaner and microfiber cloths, clean all exposed glass, such as the windshield, side windows, back window, and rear-view mirror. Wet one cloth with glass cleaner, for cleaning, using a second cloth to buff out any streaks. Dont forget the sunroof instrument cluster lens and dome light lens.

Pro Tip: If your doors have upper window frames, roll the windows down a few inches and clean the top edge of the glass, first. Then, roll the windows up and clean the rest of the glass.

Pricing Of Car Interior Detailing

If you do decide to call in the auto detailing professionals and you are searching for the best deal, you may wonder why car detailing prices vary so much. The simple answer is that no two auto detail shops are the same. Location, size of detail shop, the different packages offered and the time dedicated to some specialty services all contribute to the difference detailing rates per job.

Rinse Your Sponge Regularly During Cleaning

To reduce the risk of swirl marks in the future, make sure you rinse your sponge regularly during washing, preferably in a separate bucket. Dirt particles on the sponge can easily cause damage to the paint, so try to get the sponge or cloth as clean as possible before bringing it back to the paintwork.

  • Start by grabbing all of the old french fry boxes, fast food bags, Big Gulps, and trash that you can find in your vehicles interior. Be sure to pay attention to the trunk as well.
  • If you have kids, check under seats and in the cracks between seats. They love to hide crayons, snack wrappers, and other trash in hard-to-reach places.
  • Take out anything that isnt vital to operating the vehicle that youve been carrying around. Take the time to finally donate that bag of clothes that have been rolling around in your trunk for six months and be sure to remove dirty clothes or shoes while youre at it.

Detailing a car requires going way beyond the usual vacuum and wash job. It means paying attention to the tiny details that add up to make the car look show-worthy. Begin with the interior so that you don’t have to worry about messing up your exterior while detailing the inside.

    Car Interior Detailing Summary

Most of us spend 8 to 15 hours a week inside our cars, so it makes sense that we should keep them neat and tidy. Yet finding the time to detail the inside of the car is difficult with our busy schedules. If you take just five minutes each time you wash your car to remove the trash, shake out the mats, and wipe down the dash, console and seats, you can stay on top of this detailing chore. Then when it comes time for a full interior detail, the task will not seem quite so daunting.

Use A Towel Or Chamois To Dry The Paintwork

If you let your car air dry after youve cleaned it, water marks will develop on the surface and these are often more difficult to remove than dirt and road dust.

To dry your car effectively, use a soft microfibre towel or chamois to carefully remove any and all water droplets from the paintwork. Using a long, figure of 8 action, start at the top of the car and work down each panel to remove excess water and leave the paintwork looking clean and clear.

How To Detail A Car Interior Like A Pro

I started with the shop vac and picked up as many large bits, granola bar crumbs, pollen, pet hair and abandoned French fries as I could. Your little carpet spot cleaner wont be able to handle sucking up anything larger than sand.

Next up I used warm water and a drop or two of blue Dawn dish soap and sprayed the car seats. This pre-spray starts to loosen the dirt in the fabric. I used my Bissell Little Green ProHeat as my sprayer but didnt use the suction and let the solution saturate in.

Im not sure whether to recommend this to you or not?

It did a great job cleaning the car, but the hose had a leak near the body of the machine and the ProHeat didnt heat anything up? Perhaps I just got a faulty unit, but Ive since sent it back and am looking to replace it with the less expensive version:

Now that your fabric is wet, its time to bring out your drill brush:

This drill brush is great for so many things Ive used it to scrub the shower floor, the grout in the kitchen floor and now the fabrics in my car so its not a one-use tool.

Press gently when using it though or you might burn your drill out. I went over the seats and created some suds and then used the spot cleaner to rinse and extract as much liquid and dirt as possible. Pay particular attention to the sides of the seats where people slide in and to the front of the seats where the back of your knees rest. The water from these areas was considerably dirtier than the rest of the seat.

How To Detail A Car At Home

To detail a car at home, youll need several car-specific tools and car detailing supplies, as well as a few things you might have at home. The first time, especially, you might need to set aside a few hours. If your car is only a couple years old and has been regularly washed and vacuumed, a full car detail might only take an hour or two. On the other hand, if your car is older and hasnt seen a vacuum in years, auto detailing the first time could take a whole day.

Cleaning & Treating Door Panels & Jambs

Door panels are often made of several materials, including fabric, vinyl, carpet and leather. Vinyl can be scrubbed to remove shoe scuffs.

General-purpose cleaners, like 303 UV Cleaner, or interior vinyl and plastic cleaners, like Nextzett Plastic Deep Cleaner easily remove black scuff marks from these areas.

Thoroughly clean around door handles, pulls and window cranks, using a toothbrush and soapy wash water. Clean and dry the speaker grilles and the wells on armrests, too.

If the door panels have storage pockets, use your sponge or wash mitt to clean in these areas, as they tend to collect a lot of dirt and crud.

Have you noticed something? A lot of this stuff is just common sense and having a mindset of being thorough.

Anyway, next, use your sponge or wash mitt and soapy water to clean all the way around the door frame and the door sill.

When youre finished, dry the door completely with a clean towel.

    But wait a second!

If your door panel is leather or vinyl, be sure to treat it with a leather or vinyl protectant. Fabric door panels can be treated with a fabric protectant to reduce staining and fading.

    Shine & Polish To Finish

Benefits of Cleaning A Car Interior And The Best Way To Do It
    • While the waxed surface is waterproof, a truly hydrophobic finish water beads up and runs off will improve shine and prevent most road grime from sticking to your paint. Turtle Wax Ice Seal N Shine goes on easy with a microfiber cloth and lasts for months.
    • By this time, the tires should be dry. Spray them with Turtle Wax WetN Black Ultra Wet Tire Shine wipe with a cloth for a more matte finish. This leaves a nice finish, protecting your tires from sun damage and slowing down dry rot. Your tires will also stay cleaner, longer.
    • Finally, as with the interior, glass comes last. Using non-ammonia glass cleaner and microfiber cloths, clean all exposed glass and polycarbonate. Moisten one cloth with glass cleaner to clean, using a second cloth to buff out any streaks. Start with the sunroof glass, moving to the windshield, side windows, side mirrors, and rear window. Then, clean the headlight, fog light, and taillight lenses.

The first time your detail your car at home, it might seem like a lot of steps. As with all things, detailing your car quickly and efficiently takes practice. Once you see, feel, and smell the results of a freshly detailed car, though, itll have been a worthwhile experience.
