Keep your key on you but keep a spare at home or with a trusted friend who can get access to it for you in a pinch. This is a good idea not just for locking your key in the car but if you happen to lose your key at some point in time as well, or if you’re going to loan your car to somebody else and you don’t want to hand over your whole keychain. It’s never a bad idea to have a backup key in case of emergencies. Just make sure you’re keeping it in a safe and secure location when you don’t need it.

A Screwdriver Can Also Help:

As we mentioned in opening your locked house door, a flat screwdriver can also assist in unlocking a vehicle door. You only need to pry the door open a little, then insert a rod and push the unlock button.

The rod has to be long to make sure you can reach the mechanism and sturdy enough not to break or bend.

Try A Rod Or Wire Clothes Hanger

You can also use a rod or a straightened wire clothes hanger to save the day during a lockout. This method works best on cars that have power door locks and their lock buttons located on the armrest.

Use a doorstop or a thin piece of wood to gently pry open a space between the top of one of the car’s front-door window frames and its body. Proceed slowly and be gentle to avoid damaging the vehicle.

Slide the rod or straightened clothes hanger into the opening you’ve created.

Use the rod or clothes hanger to slide or depress the car’s door-lock flipper or button, and open the car door.

Remember, jockeying a string or a wire hanger into position in such a constricted space is extremely difficult. It can take quite a bit of time and many tries to maneuver these makeshift tools into place, but it can be done . Be patient and don’t give up! One of these methods may well help you to unlock your car’s doors when you’re locked out.

Unlocking A Locked Door Through A Slim Jim

3 Expert Tools To Open Your Locked Car

Another way to unlock your car door is to make use of a tool thats more commonly known as a slim jim. Although this kind of tool can work, it is a much more difficult task to do. There is a risk of damaging the weather stripping on the door. Additionally, there is also a risk of damaging the other wires on the door.

This method is not recommended for automatic locks or those that have automatic windows because of the presence of more wires. Its not worth taking the risk of damaging the connections just to open the door.

Here are the steps on how to do that:

1. Find a suitable Slim Jim tool

The ideal material to create this tool is a long and slim piece of metal like a hanger. The end is bent to create a hook, this is the part that goes into the door. Sometimes, the metal from the hanger isnt that sturdy. You can double it over to ensure the hook keeps its shape.

2. Insert into the door

Due to its thinness, you can insert it on the door in between the weatherstrip and the window of the passenger seat rather than the driver seat.

There are fewer wires on the passenger seat because most of the controls are found on the drivers seat.

3. Use the hook to open the lock

The locking pin is what you are aiming for with the hook. Pool the hookup ones it grips the lock. To easily find the lock, you should find the bottom edge of the window then go two inches further down.

From The Inside Unlock A Car Door That Has Automatic Locks

The steps for getting the top part of the car door away from its body are exactly the same as those used with manual locks just use a long, thin tool like a wedge to create a space. Then take another tool and use it for pressing on the unlock button. When it comes to automatic locks, how difficult it is to unlock one from the outside is determined by how difficult or easy it is pulling the door away from the body of the car and where the switch or button controlling the locks is located.

Step One How Are The Car Locks Activated?

Determine how the locks on the car are activated. There are several different ways that automatic locks can be activated. Check to whether the cars unlock button is on the drivers side or the central console.

Step Two: Press On Car Button

Create a loop or hook tool to press on the button. There are some automatic locks that come with a basic button located on the drivers side armrest, and a tool like a straight metal rod may be used in order to reach this button and unlock the door by pressing on it. If it isnt easy to access the button or it is a switch, then you might need a tool to look or hook at the end. The best technique to figure out what works is trial-and-error.

Gain Entry Through The Trunk

With manual locks, there is a chance that the trunk is unlocked even if the doors are locked. If this is the case, then it may be possible to get into the vehicle through the trunk.

Heres how you can unlock the vehicle through the trunk:

Step 1: Open up the trunk. Look for any opening that you can use to get into the interior of the car.

  • Tip: Usually an opening like this is located in the center of the rear seats.

Step 2: Push the rear seats forward. Look for something to press or pull on that would allow you to lower the rear seats and push them forward. Many sedans have a cable that can be pulled on for just this purpose. Look all along the edge of the rear seats.

Step 3: Get into the car. Crawl into the car and unlock the doors manually.

  • Tip: These techniques are certainly effective, but performing them in a parking lot, for example, may attract some suspicion. Always keep a cool head and have identification handy in case authorities show up.

If you use any of the above methods to open your car when you lock your keys inside, you won’t have to resort to breaking a window to get your keys back.If your cars trunk, door or power locking mechanism refuses to unlock/lock, get a certified mechanic, such as one from Your Mechanic, to inspect the locking mechanism.

The Rod And Wedge Method

If you’re unable to get the coat hanger down between the window and the frame of your door, then you may need to graduate to the rod and wedge method for accessing your vehicle. A wedge, like a small wooden door stop, is the best tool for this but you can use something like a paint scraper in a pinch if you need to as well or a screwdriver. Those methods are more damaging to your vehicle and can cause dents or scrapes in the paint, so if possible, stick with the wood.

For this to work what you need to do is place the narrow end of the wedge of wood at the top of your door frame, its about as far from the locking mechanism as you can possibly get. You can use the butt of your hand to hammer the wedge into the gap between your door and the door frame. Because your door is locked into the frame of the car down by the handle itself, the top of the door is not actually held in by anything at all. When you wedge the wood in it will slowly bend the door away from the frame. Obviously you don’t want to do this too extensively as it could damage the car, but there will be enough give in the metal to allow you to open a gap between the door and the frame itself. That gap will be wide enough for you to use a metal rod or a coat hanger to reach down to the locking mechanism of your car.

House Door Method #: Use A Bump Key

Bump keys are specially crafted keys that are used to unlock pin based locking systems, which are used on the vast majority of homes. Most pin systems are spring-loaded, and the ridges of the keys press against the corresponding pins, which then unlock the lock.

Bump keys are usually used for common home locks since most of these use a single-sided key. Since most cars have a double-sided key, these bump keys are generally not as useful on them. Check out this tutorial to find out how to make and use a bump key.

Use Your Windshield Wiper

HOW TO UNLOCK CAR DOOR WITH NO KEY ( LOCKED KEYS IN CAR )

You can usually remove your car’s windshield wipers pretty easily, but the method differs between each car model. No matter what car you have though, a windshield wiper might save you from having to call a locksmith to open your locked car door.

First, remove the wiper from the front of your car. If your window is slightly ajar, or you can wedge the door open, you maneuver it into the interior of the car. Use the wiper to either grab the keys on the chair or hit the unlock button on the side of the door .

You can practically use anything long enough that fits through your window, but if you’re in a hurry and don’t see anything else around you that can fit through the crack, the windshield wiper is your best bet.

How To Safely Break Into Your Own Car

Ian Swan

Its pretty easy to get locked out of a car, and if the key gets lost or locked inside of the vehicle without a spare handy, then there’s a real problem.

Sometimes, people have been forced to take extreme measures to retrieve keys that have been locked inside of a vehicle, some even going so far as to smash one of their own windows. Tempered glass is treated to shatter into thousands of pieces when it breaks so that there are no large shards of glass flying in an accident. You can avoid the hassle and cost of breaking open a window and cleaning up the glass shards if you know the right way to break into your own car.

There are a few techniques that you can try, as they dont take particularly specialized equipment and they can be done by people with little or no prior locksmithing experience. Calling a professional locksmith is usually an option, but there could be a long wait or professional locksmiths may not be available nearby.

  • Warning: If a child or pet is trapped inside of a car, call the police or fire department to get them out as quickly as possible.

Unless the situation is an emergency, dont rush any of the steps involved. Dont force the door open. Damaging the doors or the locks themselves turns an inconvenience into a serious problem.
