How To Get Tree Sap Off Of Windshield

How to remove hard tree sap from car bodywork

If the tree sap has gotten on your windshield, do not use the wipers to try and remove it. This step will only smear the tree sap around and make it more challenging to clean.

Instead, wash the windshield like you would during a car wash. Once it is as clean as it can get, pour your chosen sap remover onto your clean microfiber cloth. Put the towel on the affected area and let it sit for 30 seconds.

Rub the area gently until the sap has been removed. If this doesnt work after a few tries, you can gently use a razor blade to scrape the sap away.

Once the windshield is clean, use an automotive glass cleaner to finish the job. Its best to avoid any household cleaners that contain ammonia.

Using A Paint Cleaner To Help Clear Up Discoloration

If your cars paint job has discolorations in the clear coat after removing tree sap or insect droppings then you may want to try using a paint cleaner. A paint cleaner is different from a clay bar. Clay bars remove contaminants above the surface while a paint cleaner removes contaminants from within the surface.

Paint cleaners are typically a combination of very fine abrasive and solvent. Meguiars makes a truly outstanding paint cleaner if this is a route you want to explore. Apply a small amount on an application pad or microfiber towel and work into the area that is discolored. It isnt wax and doesnt need to dry. Work it in by wiping in a straight line from the front to the back of the vehicle. When done, wipe away with a clean microfiber towel.

Its important to note that this product is very fine abrasive so try to limit its use to stains and discolorations that have not responded to other methods.

Wash The Entire Vehicle

Even if it appears that only one small area has tree sap on its surface, its always best to play it safe, and wash the whole damn car with the two-bucket car washing method. This will remove any other unsavory contaminants, and with a little luck, maybe even eliminate that sticky tree sap.

Quick Tip: Standing water will cause water spots to form if they are not removed quickly. To negate this issue, keep the vehicle wet at all times, and then dry it as quickly as possible with a series of ultra-plush microfiber towels. You should also try and stay out of the sun, and avoid using hard water at all costs.

As you encounter tree sap or resin on the vehicles exterior surfaces, try and lift what you can with a clean microfiber cloth and a splash of rubbing alcohol, marking whatever is too stubborn to remove with a quick rub with painters tape. Photo Credit: Micah Wright

The Secret Ingredient For Removing Tree Sap

You probably didn’t realize you carry pine pitch or sap remover with you every day, in your bag or in the glove box of your car. You may even hook it on the belt loop of your pants, depending on how germaphobic you are.

If you guessed this product is hand sanitizer, you are correct.

Hand sanitizer will remove tree sap from almost anything, including the paint on your car. Just be sure you try it on a small, unnoticeable area of the surface before you go to town on whatever it is you’re cleaning. Isopropyl alcohol is the chemical ingredient that breaks down and removes the resin.

If you use hand sanitizer, make sure it’s alcohol-based.

Its always best to wash your car before and after you use any products to remove sap. There are many products available to remove sap, some of which can also remove the protectants on your paint. Wax is one of those protectants.

You shouldnt use liberal amounts of tar remover – only use as much as you actually need. Using your muscles is a better option than applying more remover. After you remove the sap and wash your car, its best to apply a protective coat of wax.

How To Protect Paint Finish Of A Car

In addition to trying to avoid parking under trees, strong protective wax or sealants are the best lines to guard against the sap, dropping, and other potential impurities which can attach to and damage the finish. The condensed explanation is that auto wax lasts not more than a few weeks when the best screeners can last for years if you dont have the differences between waxes and sealants.

As indicated before, Im a great lover of the two-year Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant. Even a ceramic layer might be considerable. These coatings are a form of screening agent that is intended for improved and long-term protection.

Removing Tree Sap And Pine Resin From Glass

Tree sap doesnt just land on painted surfaces. Its equally inclined to anoint windshields, passenger windows, and side mirrors with gooey globs of grossness as well.

If this happens, DO NOT use your windshield wipers. This will merely smear that shit all over your glass, which may impair your ability to see. Sap also has the ability to stick to the wiper blades themselves, rendering them nearly useless once fully dried.

To safely remove tree sap and resin from automotive glass, follow the steps above, and add a box cutting razor blade or a paint surface scraper into the mix to help scrape the deposit away. Once thats complete, break-out your rubbing alcohol or bug and tar remover, and hit whatever stubborn residue is left behind with a bit of elbow grease and a clean microfiber towel.

Finish things up with a dash of glass cleaner and a separate rag, then stand back to admire your work, knowing that a nano ceramic coating could have kept that tree sap from sticking in the first place.

Tree sap and pine resin may not be completely avoidable, but they are removable. So take your time and be careful, because when done correctly, the removal of tree secretions can be both safe and successful. Photo Credit: Redwater NAPA/Facebook

Easy Ways To Remove Sap From Your Car

The BEST Tree Sap Removal Product for your Car is?

Parking under the trees might result in drops of sap all over your car. Tree sap, just like toxic bird poop, will eat through the layers of paint if left on the vehicle. The sun can make things even worse. It warms up the surface and expends paint allowing for the sap to get in. After the area around sap cools down, it is very hard to remove. The longer it sits, the more it hardens and adheres to the surface. Try to remove sap as soon as possible.

Since not every tree sap is the same, it might require a different method to remove. Pine tree sap is one of the hardest to get rid of. When using one of the methods below, make sure not to damage the paint.

1. Mineral Spirits. It is used for cleaning and degreasing machine tools and for thinning oil based paints, stains and varnishes. It is less flammable and less toxic than turpentine. Soak soft microfiber towel with some mineral spirits liquid and hold it for 30 sec over the sap. You want to avoid rubbing the paint around it. Mineral spirits will break up and dissolve the sap. After sap is removed wash the spot and re-apply wax/sealant.

Tips For Removing Hardened Sap

If tree sap has sat on your car for too long, causing it to become hard as a rock, traditional cleaning methods just might not cut it. Luckily, there are a few different things you can try to help eliminate it.

Hot water can help to soften hardened tree sap and make it a bit easier to wipe away with a microfiber cloth. While you need to be careful that the water isnt boiling, if you dampen a cloth with some warm water and scrub away with some alcohol, the sap should loosen up enough so that you can wipe it away.

If you notice that there are plenty of small splatters of sap on your car, the traditional cleaning method might be a bit tedious. An alternative is to use a clay bar, as this can be rubbed on the surface to pick up any loose debris from the exterior. These feel like putty and can pick up things like tar, dead insects, and more.

Can Tree Sap Damage Automotive Paint

You bet your tree-hugging hippie ass it will. Both tree sap and resin are super acidic and come loaded with sugar, harming aging automotive clear coats upon contact, and becoming even more of a threat when allowed to solidify. If given enough time, this gooey gunk will not just eat into a cars clear coat, but it will become so difficult to remove, that a complete auto paint correction procedure must be implemented.

Resin and sap arent the only offenders either. Plant secretions like gum, mucilage, oils and fats, waxes, and latex can all cause clear coat stains, peeling, and/or discoloring to occur.

Hand Wash With Automotive Shampoo

The EASY secret to remove TREE SAP from your car!

The first thing you should consider is washing your car with car wash shampoo to see if it comes out as sometimes the pressure washer can be strong enough to remove them. If this does not work, then this is where you need to consider using more aggressive techniques.

Car wash shampoo acts as an excellent lubricant for cleaning the paintwork. You can opt for heavy-duty car wash shampoos that are slightly off a pH neutral formula for additional cleaning power, just note that these shampoos may strip off any existing car wax that you have applied on the surface previously.

Remove The Sapwith Chemicals

If youre looking to remove tree sap from painted or raw metal, rubbing alcohol tends to work best. As for plastic trim, chrome, and various other painted materials, a high-end bug and tar remover should cut the kimchi just fine.

Here is the process youll want to follow

  • Use a microfiber towel and pour a few drops of the rubbing alcohol or bug and tar remover on on it.
  • Dab the towel onto the compromised area, letting it soak in for about 30 seconds, keeping the towel pressed firmly atop the sap the entire time.
  • Slowly begin to rub the area until the tree sap begins to lift. In some cases, youll have to repeat this step a few times. This is where patience comes into play, because over-applying alcohol or bug and tar remover will increase the chances of clear coat damage.
  • Quick Tip: If the contaminated area is proving to be difficult to remove, use a fingernail to gently scratch the sap into submission.

t is vital that you wash and dry the vehicle both before and after removing caked-on contaminants, as it allows you to prep the surface and rinse away any cleaning product residue that may still be stuck on the surface.
