Signs Of Motion Sickness In Dogs

Many dogs can get motion sick even on a short car ride. So, a simple trip to the veterinarian or the groomer can result in a miserable pooch! Trips by plane or train can also trigger them. Some dogs even get sick from other activities like boating.

Vomiting is an obvious sign that your dog is suffering from motion sickness, but its not the only one. There are several other signs you should be aware of. Just because your dog doesnt Ralph in the car doesnt mean hes not feeling sick. Some of the signs of motion sickness would be easy to dismiss if you dont know what youre looking for, so its important to understand all of the potential signs. Signs of motion sickness include:

  • Drooling
  • Yawning
  • Bracing stance

If you notice your dog doing any of these things when you travel, you should talk to your vet. You can also take this online quiz to help you decode some behavior and signs that might be caused by motion sickness.

What Causes A Dog To Get Motion Sickness

The three main causes of motion sickness in dogs are Age, Stress, and Medical Issues.

  • Just as car sickness affects more children than adults, puppies and younger dogs are more susceptible to motion sickness. This is because their equilibrium is not fully developed yet. As they mature, many puppies will outgrow motion sickness by the time they turn one.

  • Stress

Stress can cause motion sickness in dogs. Some dogs associate going on a car ride with going to the vet or a past traumatic travel experience.

Dogs that travel less frequently arent used to car rides and will often associate the car ride with feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated. This can cause more anxiety and stress, which can result in vomiting or diarrhea.

  • Medical Issues

Some dogs may experience motion sickness if they have a pre-existing medical conditions such as ear infections or vestibular disease that will make them nauseated.

Consult your vet and get your dog treated for their infection. They will have a more pleasant car ride after the infection is resolved.

Dog motion sickness can also occur if they are taking any medications.

The Emotional Impact Of Travel Sickness

Animal Medical Hospital Blog Charlotte, NC

If your dog did get carsick at any point, it will probably be resistant to any further traveling. There are a few things you need to do at that point, because you will effectively have to address two separate things. First of all, take a break. Allow your dog to regain trust in itself. In extreme cases, you may even want to change vehicles. Once your dog is slightly more settled, take a few short trips and make sure the destination is always fun. A trip to the vet is not a good idea, in other words.

You need to build your dogs tolerance up in a gradual way. Allow it to approach the vehicle on its own terms first. Then, let it get into the car, but dont actually drive. Only once you feel your dog is ready should you start taking those fun, short trips. You can use treats for this, but be aware of the fact that these can contribute to your dogs nausea. You might want to consider adding a special toy to the car that your dog can use only on those journeys.

Ginger To Soothe The Stomach

Ginger is a great anti-nausea remedy. If you know your dog suffers from car sickness and is in good health, consider giving your pet a little ginger before getting in the car. Avoid ginger if your pet is pregnant or lactating, has a bleeding disorder or heart condition, has a fever, is undergoing any treatment, is on any medications, and/or if he will be having surgery. Consult your vet for any questions.

What Are The Signs Of Motion Sickness

It’s easy to spot the signs of car sickness in dogs. Your dog may appear dull, morose, and may salivate, lick their lips, yawn, and of course vomit. Car anxiety, on the other hand, can manifest in panting, pacing, crying, and restlessness.

Does nausea cause anxiety? Often anxious dogs exhibit their stressed behaviour because they feel nauseous – but sometimes they can make themselves so stressed that they become sick. With anxious dogs, it’s hard to know whether the nausea is causing the anxiety, or whether the anxiety is causing the nausea.

Because car anxiety and car sickness are so often related, we have included tips for both cases in this guide. Luckily there are a few easy ways to get your pup the relief they deserve. Hopefully you’ll be able to enjoy some vomit-free trips in no time at all!

Signs That Your Dog Is Car Sick

The signs are about the same as for stress in general. As described here, dogs show different signs when theyâre stressed. The most common ones are:

  • Vomiting
  • Excessive scratching
  • General uneasiness

Note that some dogs might feel sick even if we donât see it. Not all dogs show the obvious signs when theyâre not feeling well. Some will just suffer silently. But as long as they donât show any obvious signs, itâs probably tolerable for them. And if you donât know that your pooch is sick, you canât do anything about it anyway. So dont worry too much about it, unless your dog really looks like hes feeling uncomfortable.

Dog Motion Sickness Remedy

1 Dog Car Sickness Remedy Must Have (Because it WORKS!)

If you need some more help with your dogs motion sickness issues, your vet can often recommend a medication to help your pup out.

Under the guidance of your veterinarian, the over the counter medication, Dramamine, can be used on your dog. Always check with your vet before giving any medication to your dog.

Note: Dog owners should avoid the Non-Drowsy Naturals Dramamine tablets. The amount of ginger in this product is too high for your dog.

Ask your vet for the recommended dose to confirm it is safe to give to your dog. This will depend on their health and any current medications they are taking.

Give Your Dog Something To Chew On

This may be a time for a favorite edible chew like The Honest Kitchens beams. You want something that your dog can consume safely and something that is also very appetizing to him. Avoid new chews so that you know exactly how your dog consumes them in order to help avoid choking hazards . The key is for him to be so completely engaged in gnawing on his chew that hes not anxiously pacing across the backseat. If you dont have doggie seat covers for your car, make sure to bring a towel where he can do his chewing or you may end up with quite a mess on your seats.

Choose The Best Location In The Car

Where your dog rides in the car can also affect motion sickness. Avoid placing your dog in the farthest back where there is the most motion. Also, if your pup can only see out the side windows, the motion makes for a blurry view of objects that can cause or compound motion sickness. Its the same concept as the seafaring advice to focus on an object on the horizon to help with motion sickness.

Instead, place her closer to the front, perhaps in the middle seat where she can look forward towards the windshield and see less blur. Remember to use a seatbelt-like harness on any unsecured dog to keep her safe in case of an accident.

Another option is to place her in a secure covered crate to limit her visibility. Especially dogs that have been crated as puppies may find this the most relaxing way to travel. Include a blanket or T-shirt with smells of home for additional comfort.

How To Stop It For Good

Riding in the car with your dog is inevitable, whether its for a vet visit, a trip to the dog park or just a fun drive.

But if your dog throws up every time he gets in the car, that could mean he struggles with car sickness.

The Dodo spoke with Dr. Clarissa B. Lyon, a veterinarian at Larklain Mobile Veterinary Services in Pennsylvania, and Dr. Linda Simon, a veterinary surgeon and a consultant for FiveBarks, who explained how to help with your dogs car sickness so you dont end up breaking the bank on cleaning supplies.

Make The Car Ride More Comfortable

Dog Car Sickness and Motion Sickness : 7 tips to relieve it
  • Adjust what your dog sees. Watching the world speed by in a blur through a side window can nauseate anyone. Put your dog in the middle seat in the back so hes more likely to look forward. Use a doggie seat belt or safety harness to keep him safely in place. Some dog owners prefer using a solid-sided crate to limit their dogs field of vision.
  • Lower the car windows. Even a few inches of fresh air will equalize inside and outside air pressure and that can help reduce nausea. Keeping the car cool and well ventilated is helpful, too.
  • Restrict your dogs food intake prior to travel. If possible, withhold food for 12 hours before the car trip. But dont restrict access to fresh water.
  • Bring something that smells like home for your dog, whether its a much-loved toy, his favorite blanket, or even your old tee shirt.
  • Buy a special toy that you only give to the dog in the car. Help him associate car travel with fun.

In additionand this is going to be hardertry not to make a fuss if she does vomit in the car. Dont pull over to clean it up, as this signals that puking will stop the car. If you get upset when she is sick in the car, or yell, she will begin to associate your emotional reaction with something being wrong with the car.

Massage Your Pressure Points

Dr Chris Brown Q& A: How to Stop Car Sickness in Dogs?

Although theres conflicting evidence whether acupressure provides motion sickness relief, its worth a shot, even if its a placebo effect.

Acupressure is based on the traditional Chinese medicine practice of acupuncture. Its believed that applying pressure to certain parts of the body can help relieve muscle tension and improve circulation.

To relieve car sickness using acupressure:

  • Locate pressure point P-6 by holding one hand with your palm facing up.
  • Place three fingers across your wrist below the wrist crease. The pressure point is located below your index finger.
  • Place your thumb below the index finger between the two large tendons.
  • Apply firm pressure in a circular motion to this point for 2 to 3 minutes. You may feel a deep, aching sensation, but it shouldnt feel painful.

Other Ways To Help Your Dog’s Car Sickness

As discussed earlier in this article, for puppies and smaller dogs suffering from motion sickness, restraining them in an elevated pet travel booster seat may help them avoid the conflicting sensory signals that can trigger the vomiting of motion sickness. You can read about our recommendations for the best types of pet travel booster seats in our “Buckle Up Your Pup” article.Travel on an empty stomach. As a general rule, dogs are less likely to throw up food on an empty stomach, so its best to avoid giving them a full meal before you take a ride in the car. However, for some dogs, a little bit of food in their stomach may decrease their chances of getting nauseous and vomiting. A little bit of water prior to travel is good too, staying hydrated is important after all.Roll down those windows a bit getting some fresh and circulated air can help some dogs feel better.

Safety Note: Make sure your dog is restrained so they cant leap out of, or even stick their head out of the window.

How Can I Tell If My Dog Is Getting Motion Sickness

Nauseous humans often turn green or pale when they feel an upset stomach approaching. Signs your dog may be experiencing motion sickness include:

    • whining and pacing
    • vomiting
    • diarrhea

If you think your dog is going to vomit, stopping the car and taking him for a walk may help temporarily relieve his stress.

Make Your Car A Happy Place For The Dog

If anxiety is what’s causing puppy car sickness, the best way to relieve your pet’s stress is to make your car a happier and more welcome place for the dog.

Do that by putting some of your pup’s favorite toys or blankets in the back seat. You can use some treats in the beginning and end of the ride, but not to put too much as over-eating can cause worse motion sickness.

Give enough praise to your dog when they behave properly within the car. This way the dog knows that they’re doing something right, and will get the necessary training about the expected behavior in the vehicle.

For puppy toys, choose those specifically for chewing to avoid your puppy trying to play with them by racing in the car. Open the back window just a little bit to allow your pooch to feel the breeze and the smells of different places and some fresh air, but not so much that your dog would stick the head out, which is dangerous.
