Should I Claim Hail Damage On My Car

Hail Damage Ruined My New Car! What Should I DO?

If your insurance covers hail damage, you should contact your insurance company as soon as possible to file a claim so it will be assigned to this specific storm event.

State minimum insurance in Indiana typically covers only crashes.

After reporting a claim, the insurance company will likely give you a certain amount of time to get your car repaired, said Zee Shaikh, an insurance agent who works with several different insurance companies. This may be six months or a year from the time the damage occured.

Shaikh recommends getting an estimate before filing a claim with insurance. If the estimated cost of repair is less than your deductible amount, then Shaikh recommends trying to pay for it out of pocket and not filing a claim.

For example, if your deductible is $500 and the cost of repair is $400, Shaikh said, there is no point of filing a claim if the insurance company won’t cover part of the cost.

An insurance company may suggest a body shop to perform the work however, vehicle owners ultimately have the right to choose where the work is performed.

What Is Hail Damage

During a severe storm, chunks of ice smaller than peas or, less often, larger than baseballs can fall from the sky at speeds of many miles per hour. If hard enough when they reach the ground, hailstones can cause damage to the tune of $8 to $14 billion a year.

Hail damage spikes from March through June, and just two states Texas and Colorado account for 37% of all hail-related insurance claims. Even so, hail storms happen all over the country throughout the year.

Hail often causes damage to a homes roofing and siding, which can result in leaks. Repairs may be needed as a result of the hail damage. But it can also wreak havoc on vehicles, with nearly 750,000 claims made each year.

More important than protecting property, of course, is making sure that you and your family stay safe during a hailstorm.

How Much Does Insurance Pay For Hail Damage

Once you file a hail claim, the insurance company will typically schedule an adjuster appointment to look at the damage and write an estimate.

Since COVID-19, however, many insurance providers are moving away from field adjusters and towards virtual estimating techniques. Either way, an adjuster will inspect the car in person or virtually. Then, they will put together an estimate for the repairs.

From there, they will send you or the repair facility a check. This is typically a two-party check with both the insured and the repair facility listed. They do this to ensure the car gets fixed.

If you havent selected a repair facility by the time the insurance is ready to initiate payment, they will sometimes make it out as a two-party check to you and your lien holder. The lien holder is the bank who has loaned you the money for the car. This is because technically you dont own the car until its paid off.

If you own the car outright, the insurance company may also simply mail you a check for the estimate minus your deductible.

Sounds pretty straightforward, doesnt it? Well, its not always like that.

In fact, 99% of the time, the estimate you receive from a repair shop will be higher than your insurance tells you. Thats because the initial estimate from the adjuster didnt capture all the damage.

If that happens, dont panic.

Besides the cost to fix the hail damage, your insurance policy may also cover a rental car while your car is in the shop being repaired.

Like most vehicle insurance claims, your first hail damage claim typically will not increase your premium. This depends on your particular insurance provider and policy, but it is not unreasonable to make a hail damage claim when needed.

Although insurers typically will not raise your premium after your first claim, if you are frequently making hail damage claims or other vehicle damage claims, your insurance provider may re-evaluate your insurance policy and adjust your premiums and coverage accordingly.

As an example, if you made three or more hail damage claims over two years, your insurance provider may consider you a high-risk policyholder and raise your insurance premiums. In extreme cases, they may even choose not to cover your for hail damage at all in the future.

Before you make a claim, make sure that the repair is worthwhile given the cost of your deductible. If you have a $500 deductible, and the damages are only $300 to be repaired with paintless dent repair, it will not be worth making a claim.

How Is Hail Damage Assessed

5 Things To Know About Your Vehicles Hail Damage

When you file a claim, the insurance company will send an adjuster to examine your vehicle. The National Alliance of Paintless Dent Repair Technicians recommends that you have your vehicle looked at in a garage, or at least in a shady spot because the glare of the sun can make dents difficult to see.

The adjuster will consider the extent of the damage in order to estimate the cost of repair by one of two main methods:

  • Paintless dent removal : This will include the labor involved to fix dents from the underside of the body panel, without needing to repaint the vehicle. Cost might be assessed per panel or per dent. The estimate will also account for costs to remove and reinstall any parts.
  • Traditional method: This might be required for more severe damage, such as when body panels need to be entirely replaced. Otherwise, costs will be estimated to fix and fill dents, and repaint.

Let the insurance company know which body shop or hail repair company you prefer to use. If there’s an issue with the estimate , the body shop may be able to work it out with the insurer without your direct involvement.

Hail damage can be frustrating to deal with. Often people feel the situation may have been unavoidable and don’t feel as though they should have to pay for repairs or a deductible. Storm damage is one of those unexpected life surprises everyone just has to deal with from time to time.

Should I Keep The Hail Damage Insurance Payout For My Car

I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask this.

I’m in the US.

I just got hail damage on my 2014 Toyota Corolla. As far as I can tell, it’s all cosmetic. No damage to the windows, but a lot of dents on the top side of the car and a few on the right doors.

I owe about 8k on the car which I can pay off comfortably. It’s a 0% interest loan, so I haven’t yet. The initial cost was 22k. My insurance gave me a check for 7k for the hail damage.

I’m planning to just keep the money. Should I repair it instead? The worker said that if I don’t get the repairs, they won’t give me a payout next time there is hail damage. Will I also get nothing if I total the car later? If I go to a shop that does the repairs for 4k, will they deduct 3k from my insurance payout next time there is damage? In light of the previous discussion, should I drop comprehensive coverage if I keep the money? It seems like I should keep it for theft and other issues, but will they ask for the receipt for the hail damage later, even if the claim is for theft?

Also, more hail is expected tomorrow and the next day. If I get hail damage then, do they give me a payout because I didn’t have a reasonable amount of time to get the repairs done?

I plan to keep the car for another 8 years hopefully. 7k is a third of the starting value of the car. Sinking that into cosmetic repairs when I don’t care at all about how my car looks seems like a poor decision to me.

Do Not File A Claim For Roof Damage Unless You Can See The Damage

Some people wrongly assume that there was no damage if they do not see missing shingles. However, shingles are usually taken off a roof by wind, not hail. This is why insurance companies do not use missing shingles as an identifying criteria for hail damage.

Hail damage to the roof is often difficult to see from the ground. This is why you should have your roof inspected by an insurance adjuster who is trained to identify hail damage. An inspection by a roofer is not good enough because these people are usually not trained on identifying hail damage.

It is better to have an inspection than to assume there is no roof damage. If you are wrong, the damage could lead to leaks or other problems down the road and you might not be able to obtain insurance compensation for the damage that occurs.
